Foreword EHF President Dear handball friends, It gives me enormous pleasure to welcome you back to the EHF European League Men 2020/21 as the competition’s inaugural season now enters its exciting knockout stage. The group phase certainly lived up expectation with a series of tough, intense and energetic matches, featuring an eclectic mix of teams. The matches in the final few weeks of the group phase resulted in some closely fought matches which made for many thrilling spectacles. Indeed, the interest in the competition caught the imagination of fans across the continent with millions of fans watching the action unfold. We were delighted to see 22 broadcasters televised matches in the group phase, proving without doubt that interest in our second-tier competition remains high. And so, we now focus our attention on the 16 teams that have made it this far and who now have their sights firmly fixed on reaching the first ever EHF European League Finals in May. No nation is represented more than Germany with three clubs making their way into the Last 16. Füchse Berlin, SC Magdeburg, Rhein-Neckar Löwen go into the knockout phase after topping their respective groups. The German sides have a fine pedigree in competition’s previous guise, the EHF Cup, with Füchse two-time winners and Rhein-Neckar Löwen lifting the trophy once. The three teams go into the knockout phase as heavy favourites and it will be fascinating to see how they fare against teams out to cause an upset. One of the stories of the group phase was the run of Fivers from the Austrian capital, as the Viennese club managed to qualify for the Last 16. Their prize for reaching this far is a meeting with Füchse and this pairing is just one of eight tantalising fixtures which are sure to send pulses racing across the continent. France have two clubs represented at this stage, with USAM Nîmes Gard joined by two-time EHF Champions League winners Montpellier, once again highlighting just how competitive this season’s EHF European League is. Montpellier’s meeting with Kadetten Schaffhausen is a particularly interesting tie. Danish outfit GOG, meanwhile, will go into the knockout phase boosted by the knowledge they have two of the competition’s top goalscorers in their ranks. Emil Jakobsen and Simon Bogetoft Pytlick have hit 144 goals between them so far and they will be aiming to add to that number in the two legs against CSKA. But the group phase has already hinted that any team in this competition can spring a surprise on their day. Of course it remains our priority to ensure that this season’s competition takes place in the safest possible environment during these on-going times of Covid-19 and our thanks go to each and every club as they continue to respect and adhere to our detailed hygiene guidelines. EINE NIEDERLAGE MIT EINEM TOR
Trotz Fehler-Festivals in Durchgang eins und Dank einer klaren Steigerung nach der Pause nehmen die
Rhein-Neckar Löwen eine gute Ausgangslage mit ins Achtelfinal-Rückspiel der EHF European League. Am
Dienstag vor einer Woche setzten sich die Mannheimer bei RK Nexe 27:25 (13:14) durch. Bauen konnten
sie auf Torwart Andreas Palicka (zwölf Paraden), einen starken Jerry Tollbring (sieben Tore) und den
in Halbzeit zwei wiederentdeckten Kampfgeist, nachdem man sich bis zur Pause zehn teils u nglaubliche
Fehler geleistet hatte. Den Löwen gelingt am Ende ein erster Schritt ins V iertelfinale.
Die Löwen finden gar nicht gut ins Spiel. Trotz zweier Paraden von Andreas Palicka gehen die Kroaten
mit 2:0 in Führung, ehe Andy Schmid den ersten Löwen-Treffer zum 2:1 erzielt (3.). Das Problem: eine
unfassbar hohe Fehlerzahl. Es scheint so, als hätten die Gelben auf dem Weg von Mannheim nach Nasice
den Großteil ihrer Konzentrationsfähigkeit verloren. Die Folge: haarsträubende Fehlpässe, Regelfehler,
Missverständnisse. So kann Nexe den Zwei-Tore-Vorsprung bis zum 8:6 halten, trotzdem sich auch die
Kroaten einige schlechte Aktionen leisten (18.).
Martin Schwalb reagiert, bringt in seiner ersten Auszeit drei neue Leute. Romain Lagarde, Albin Lager-
gren und Jannik Kohlbacher sollen es vor allem in der stockenden Offensive richten. Aber auch sie tun
sich extrem schwer. Immer wieder werfen die Löwen Bälle weg, bauen damit den Gegner auf. Selbst
als es so scheint, dass man mit einem 3:0-Lauf und der ersten Führung im Spiel Ruhe reinbringen kann,
ziehen sich die Löwen mit dummen Fehlern wieder runter. Nach der sechsten Parade des überragenden
Palicka und dem 9:11 durch Patrick Groetzki sind es ganz kurz zwei Tore Vorsprung (23.). Zwei krasse
Fehler und zwei Minuten später steht es schon wieder 11:11 (25.).EHF EUROPEAN LEAGUE MEN

Erster Schritt ins Viertelfinale, aber Nexe lässt zunächst nicht locker
Auch das 11:13 durch Jesper Nielsen hält nicht lange (26.). Mit einem eigenen 3:0-Lauf holt sich Nexe
die Führung noch vor der Pause zurück und kann mit einem 14:13 aufrechten Hauptes in die Kabine
gehen. Die Löwen hadern vor allem mit der eigenen Leistung, die in Halbzeit zwei in den allermeisten
Bereichen nur besser werden kann. Vorangeht dabei Jerry Tollbring. Der Linksaußen erzielt die ersten
drei Löwen-Tore nach der Pause, beim 15:16 trifft er bereits zum sechsten Mal (34.). Nexe lässt sich
davon nicht beeindrucken. Beim 17:16 durch Fran Mileta wechselt die Führung wieder auf die Seite der
Kroaten (37.).
Die Partie nimmt in dieser Phase richtig Fahrt auf. Halil Jaganjac wuchtet beim 20:19 bereits seinen
vierten Schuss in die Maschen (42.), dreht jetzt noch einmal am Rad. Das 21:20 ist ein Traumtor der
Marke Kraft und Technik in perfekter Kombination (43.). Mit der achten Parade des starken Moreno Car
geraten die Löwen in Zugzwang. Wichtig, dass Philipp Ahouansou in dieser Phase sein Schussglück
p robiert und findet. Sein Treffer zum 21:21 bringt den erneuten Ausgleich (44.). Schwalbe wechselt nun
noch einmal im Rückraum, bringt Lagarde für Schmid auf Mitte und Kirkeløkke für Lagergren auf halbrechts.
Die Crunchtime hat es in sich. Kein Team steckt zurück. Lagarde bedient Kohlbacher mustergültig: 22:22
(46.). Palicka landet seine neunte Parade (47.). Ahouansou peitscht aus knapp zehn Metern: 22:23 (48.).
Die Löwen sind am Drücker – und den lassen sie sich jetzt nicht mehr aus der Hand nehmen. Lagarde
steigt bei acht Metern hoch: 22:24 (51.). Nach Stürmerfoul von Nexe geht Groetzki steil: 22:25 (52.). Die
letzten Minuten bringen die Löwen ordentlich über die Zeit, vor allem Palicka mit starken Szenen hält
den Vorsprung. Am Ende nehmen die Mannheimer mit dem 25:27 aus Nexe-Sicht einen wertvollen Zwei-
Tore-Sieg mit in die Heimat.

Die verschiebbaren Teleskoptribünenanlagen ermöglichen es, das Spielfeld individuell und mit variablen Abmessungen anzupassen, wodurch es möglich ist, sowohl den Handball- als auch Basketball- Anforderungen gerecht zu werden. So werden neben Heimspielen der Rhein-Neckar Löwen in der EHF European League auch die Basketball-Bundesliga-Heimspiele der MLP Academics Heidelberg dort ausgetragen. Namens- geber der Großsporthalle ist das Softwareunternehmen SNP Schneider-Neureither & Partner SE, welches eine Partnerschaft mit einer Laufzeit von zehn Jahren unterzeichnet hat. Das Rückspiel im Achtelfinale der Euro League gegen RK Nexe am 30. März 2021 ist die Premiere der Rhein-Neckar Löwen im SNP Dome.
