n “Shasta comes from Rwanda in Central Africa, a relatively small, landlocked coun-
try. She has strong family ties, and is proud of her origins. It was only by chance that
I discovered her sedcard, and immediately found her fascinating.
Photographing dark-skinned models in the Alps inevitably produces contrast-rich
results, so we end up spending many hours in the mountains during a shoot. Sur-
prisingly, Shasta has exceptionally good hiking equipment, and that motivates her
to hike to the top of mountains whose peaks may still be hidden in the clouds. Un-
fortunately, the temperatures can be extremely fresh up high, but Shasta is brave and
always ready to pose, even when the temperature is sometimes under 10 °C!

In addition to modelling, Shasta designs and handmakes clothing in the fabrics, patterns and colours typical of her home country,
ingeniously combining traditional African aesthetics with more modern, sensual styles. She doesn’t need a model to show off her
outfits as she does it all herself with selfies, of which she is the leading proponent! Of course, her experience behind the camera
can be quite helpful when we’re posing in complicated, demanding settings.” – Stefan Soell

Es gibt kaum einen größeren Kontrast als ein farbiges Model in den
Alpen zu fotografieren. So verbringen wir viele Stunden unserer
Shootings in den Bergen. Shasta besitzt erstaunlicherweise eine sehr
gute Wanderausrüstung und das motiviert bis über die Wolken auf
die höchsten Berge zu steigen. Leider herrschen so weit oben in den
Alpen frische Temperaturen aber Shasta ist jedes Mal tapfer und be-
reit zu modeln, und das bei manchmal unter 10°.
Neben dem Modeln entwirft und näht sie Kleidung in den landestypi-
schen Stoffen, Mustern und Naturfarben. Auf geniale Weise kom-
biniert Shasta den traditionellen, afrikanischen Kleidungsstil mit
modernen, sexy Schnitten. Sie braucht keine Models für ihre Fashion-
Werbefotos, sie ist eine moderne Selfie-Queen und fotografiert sich
selbst in ihren Outfits. Damit hat sie auch hinter der Kamera Erfah-
rung und das kann bei komplizierten und anspruchsvollen Sujets

n The son of artist parents, Dahmane was born in Paris on April 21, 1959. His father was a
painter and engraver, and his mother a poet and painter. Dahmane became familiar with
photography at an early age, being first introduced to it by his grandmother and a pho-
tographer friend of his parents. At 15 he began to develop a consuming interest in nude
photography, gathering his first experience with two classmates from secondary school,
who modelled for him. His predilection for black and white photography has continued
into the Millennium; the medium allows him to refine and develop his technique as part
of an on-going process. He quickly learned that Leica lenses give you the best results,
and for this reason, prefers Leica SLRs and enlargers.
Dahmane published his first work before he was 20, includ- Dahmane
ing an extensive reportage on the suffering of animals in zoos.
At the same time, he worked as a freelance portrait photogra-
pher for a range of French magazines, including L’Expansion,
Capital, L’Express, Le Figaro, VSD, Closer, L’Usine Nouvelle
and others.
Several volumes of his nudes have been released, including
Dahmane (bags), Dressed Nudes (Futami-Shobo), Dressed
Nudes (Edition Skylight and La Musardine), Erotic Sessions
(Edition Skylight and La Musardine) and Addicted to Nudes
(Edition Skylight and La Musardine). His nude works have
been published all over the world and exhibited in London,
Paris, Rome and Los Angeles, among other places.
Dahmane still lives in Paris, and continues to devote himself to
photographing female nudes and doing portraits. He is repre-
sented by the Claude Lemand Gallery.
