ings, pushing its expansibility on a fine line between beauty and ugliness into
the real-surreal. Voluptuous torsos and bulbous extremities besiege her paint-
ings, an arresting parade of odd-looking noses, nipples, and wig-like clusters
of mostly blonde hair whose glamour always comes with a sense of incomple-
tion. Gender is alternatively exaggerated or completely neglected, sharpening
the figures’ enigmatic character. Held between cartoon-like joyousness and the
masterful formality of modernist sculpture, they are stretching and bending
in uncomfortable postures in an endless time loop. In her essay, Flavia Frigeri
describes these paintings as the twilight of beauty suffused with an art-histori-
cal memory. “Through her eclectic approach to figurative painting,” she writes,
“Bonnet challenges and addresses normative aesthetic values, as well as ideas
concerning identity and representation.”

online,” the artist says. “So I use the
same strategy to mirror this constant
information flow: the paintings them-
selves are more layered, contain more
brushstrokes, more techniques, thicker
paint, and more varied colors, while the
backgrounds contain hidden references,
and the titles carry hidden meanings.

Urs Fischer: Sirens
Die Sirenen in diesem Buch schauen uns aus großen Siebdruckgemälden an,
geschaffen vom Schweizer Künstler Urs Fischer, der hier Publicity-Shots von
Schauspielern des klassischen Hollywood wie in einer Collage mit ihren eige-
nen Doppelbildern und fließenden Abstraktionen zusammen montiert hat.
Aufgrund dieser organischen Formen bezeichnet Fischer selbst die Bilder als
Landschaftsgemälde, denen er als ganz andere Landschaft eine Gruppe von
Skulpturen gegenüberstellt: kleine Figuren, die auf dem Galerieparkett mit

tions. Due to these organic forms, the artist himself speaks of the pictures as
landscape paintings, and he juxtaposes them as a different sort of landscape
with a set of sculptures across the gallery floor: small figures interacting with
found elements such as potatoes or a bent spoon. These witty inventions in
painted bronze are grouped around a mirror pond framed by potted plants,
whose slow dripping fills the spaces like another form of siren call. Work images
and installation shots from both venues of these twin exhibitions at Galerie
Max Hetzler in Berlin are accompanied by an essay from Gregor Jansen, who
discusses the issues of physical reality, perception, and quasi-filmic projection
reflected in these works.

Mirror Paintings between 1982 and 1990 – between Albert Oehlen’s earliest
work, when he found a new freedom in figurative painting with loose brush-
strokes and a subversive sense of humor, and the end of the decade, when he
riddled abstract compositions with art-historical references and playful motifs.
Oehlen first glued mirrors onto the canvas as part of an arsenal of conceptual
painterly challenges he posed on him-
self. Painted over with thick colors and
layers of varnish, the mirrors at the same
time become part of the composition,
disrupt the pictorial space, and, with a
wink, include the figure of the viewer
into paintings of living rooms, museum
interiors, or stage-like spaces enclosed
by heavy brick walls. “The reflective sur-
faces that stud the Mirror Paintings are
emblematic of the relentless specula-
tion, the great openness, that has char-
acterized Oehlen’s entire career,” writes
Raphael Rubinstein. “Oehlen insists on
only one thing: that painting remain an
open question, a visual space in which
anything might appear, just as anything
might appear in one of those glued-on
mirrors.”
