Allen Bridge-Spielern ein herzliches Willkommen zum 80-jährigen
Jubiläum des Internationalen Bridge-Turniers in St. Moritz.
Ich möchte bei dieser Gelegenheit meinem leider schon lange verstor-
benen Stiefvater Conte Gian Franco Fabbricotti von Herzen danken.
Er hat dieses Turnier 1941 gegründet und viele Jahre organisiert.
Später kam dann meine Mutter Contessa Helga Fabbricotti dazu und
hat nach seinem Tod im Jahre 1996 das Turnier alleine organisiert. Seit
2006 habe ich dieses Turnier übernommen und hatte das Glück 2015
in Fernando Piedra den perfekten Partner gefunden zu haben. Ohne
ihn wäre dieses Turnier nicht mehr existent, denn er bringt die besten
Spieler aus aller Welt nach St. Moritz. Fernando hat dieses Turnier zum
stärksten, privat organisierten Bridgeturnier auf der Welt gemacht.
Möge dieses 80-jährige Jubiläum für alle langjährigen und neuen
Bridgespieler ein einmaliges und unvergessliches Erlebnis werden.

80 years Bridge in St. Moritz
Our warmest welcome to all Bridge players and their friends on
the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the International Bridge
Tournament in St. Moritz.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my stepfather Conte Gian
Franco Fabbricotti with all my heart. He founded this tournament in
1941 and organized it for many years after. Later my mother Contessa
Helga Fabbricotti assisted him and took over after his death in 1996.
Since 2006 I have been in charge of this wonderful tournament and
was lucky enough to find the perfect partner in Fernando Piedra
in 2015. Without him this tournament would not exist anymore. He
invites the best players in the world to St. Moritz and has made this
tournament the strongest, privately organized Bridge tournament in
the world.
We wish you all a most enjoyable Bridge anniversary in the glorious
surroundings of our beloved Engadine.

80° anno di Bridge in St. Moritz Benvenuti a tutti i partecipanti a questo 80° anniversario di torneo internazionale di Bridge a St. Moritz. Colgo l’occasione per ringraziare di tutto cuore. il mio Patrigno Conte Gian Franco Fabbricotti. Lui fondo’ questo torneo nel 1941 , lo organizzo› con successo per molti anni, fino la sua morte nel 1996. In seguito, fu mia madre Contessa Helga Fabbricotti che continuo’ ha organizzare da sola, il torneo. Dal 2006 ho preso io le redini di questo torneo di Bridge e ho avuto la grande fortuna, nel 2005 di incontrare Fernando Piedra , il perfetto Partner nell’organizzazione . Fernando è riuscito ad organizzare è fare di questo torneo il più grande torneo internazionale privato al Mondo. Senza di lui non esisterebbe più’ questo magnifico torneo e lui che riunisce i migliori Giocatori al mondo qui a St. Moritz. Auguro a tutti i giocatori che sono qui con noi da tanti anni e a i nuovi partecipanti che questo 80esimo anniversario regali un’unica e indi- menticabile esperienza. Auguriamo a tutti buona fortuna buon divertimento.
80 ans de bridge à St-Moritz Bienvenue à tous les bridgeurs à notre Tournoi international de bridge de Saint-Moritz, qui fête ses 80 ans. Je saisis cette occasion pour rendre hommage et remercier du fond du cœur mon beau-père, le Conte Gian Franco Fabbricotti, qui nous a malheureusement quittés il y a longtemps déjà. Il a fondé ce tournoi en 1941 puis en a assuré l’organisation pendant des années. Ensuite, ma mère, Contessa Helga Fabbricotti, l’a épaulé avant de prendre entière- ment le relais au décès de son époux, en 1996. J’ai repris les rênes du tournoi en 2006 et eu la chance, en 2015, de trouver le partenaire idéal à mes côtés en la personne de Fernando Piedra. Sans lui, ce tournoi se serait éteint car c’est grâce à lui que les meilleurs joueurs de la Planète se pressent aux tables de St-Moritz. Fernando a fait de cette manifestation le tournoi de bridge privé le plus prisé au monde! Espérons que ce grand anniversaire rond, notre 80ème édition, reste- ra gravé dans les mémoires des joueurs de longue date comme dans celle des nouveaux bridgeurs. Bonne chance à chacun, et surtout, beaucoup de plaisir!

«Why I dared to double Rixie Marcus 40 years ago»
80 years is a long time and many people never get to
be that old but the founder of this tournament Count
Gian Franco Fabbricotti passed away in 1996 at the
age of 91 and was one of the most charming men I
ever met in my life with a great sense of humor.
In 1941 our bridge tournament took place in the Palace
Hotel in St. Moritz for the first time with just four tables
in the middle of world war two. This small but very
refined event was organized by my stepfather Gian
Franco Fabbricotti for many years to come. The peak
was in the 1970ies with more than 160 players in the
Open. As of 1975 he was increasingly supported by my
mother Helga Fabbricotti, who took over completely in
1997. In those times there were no computers and no
internet. Our tournament director Baron Joachim von
Richthofen calculated all the results with no or little technical help and I remember
writing the results on a large piece of paper which we hung up in the halls of the
Palace Hotel at about 2.00 p.m. in the morning. As Joachim used to drink at least
one bottle of whiskey while working on the results, I am not quite sure if they were
really always right..... As most of you know we had a lot of famous players coming
to our tournament for many years. Just to mention some of them: Omar Sharif,
Rixie Markus, Fritzi Gordon, Maria Erhart, Prince Rohan, Ed Franken, Jacqueline
Maus, Zia Mahmood, Sabine Auken and many more.
But here is my story with Rixie Markus.
It happened about 40 years ago. I was an absolute beginner in bridge and
participated in the Open of our bridge tournament most probably for the first time.
At some point my partner and I played against Rixie Markus. Their bidding ended
in 4 hearts.. Please do not ask me why I had the courage (or the stupidity!) to
double her. She looked at me quite disdainfully and redoubled. Can you imagine
how my heart was beating. Quite a few people were sitting around this table
watching. You should have seen the look on their faces. Well to make a long
story short, guess what I had? AKx in diamonds and four cards in hearts with the
Jack. That was it. I played the Ace of diamonds, then the King and then small. My
partner had the Queen and believe it or not Rixie had three small diamonds. I also
made the Jack of hearts as Rixie had all the high hearts in her hand. One down
redoubled - how much is that?? I left the table immediately and was not happy at
all. I was deeply embarassed! How could I so stupidly have doubled the Queen
of Bridge and simply been lucky!Conte Gian Franco Fabriccotti with his wife and my mother Helga
Once I asked her how she became such a good bridge player. She answered:
Karin, you should always play with better players than you are. So by playing with
professional players in St. Moritz like Hakan Gökce, Sebastian Reim and Niko
Bausback does not make me a much better bridge player but the good results I
have with them make me happy!
What makes me even happier is the great success we have had in the past few
years with my great Partner Fernando Piedra! Thank you all for coming and
supporting this wonderful tournament in a beautiful surrounding.

Now we have Sabine Auken, Karin Caesar from the great German Ladies team, Zia Mahmood and new young stars from the Netherlands and Norway and the very young french national team. All of them kind, very professional and dis- playing their skills at the highest level. Giving every other player a good chance by making their few mistakes due to the thin air or being a little bit tired after the usual morning skiing. Also I think of the people who organize this small but exclu- sive tournament where you meet at least one player crow- ned with a European or World Championship title. The foun- der, Conte Fabbricotti, then his widow Helga (always char- ming and looking great) and nowadays her daughter Karin in cooperation with Fernando Piedra. Without you this tour- nament would not be the high- light it is today. Sie wird aber in ihrem Himmelsdasein sich immer noch über unsere dummen Fehler ärgern und bedauern, nicht mehr nach St. Moritz kommen zu können. Dieses Turnier war immer eines der Wichtigsten in ihrem Kalender und sie hat zusammen mit ihrem Mann - Peter Erhart - des öfteren beträchtliche Hindernisse überwunden, um im Januar ins Engadin zu fahren. Zur Erinnerung an Maria hat Peter Erhart in 2012 einen neuen Wettbewerb ins Leben gerufen - die Maria Erhart Trophy. Es gibt einen Glas-Wanderpreis mit einer kleinen Replik für den Jahresgewinner sowie einen angemessenen Geldpreis. Gewertet wird die beste Performance aus Mixed, Open und Team-Turnier mit unterschiedlichen Quotienten. Endgültig gewinnt den grossen Glaspreis, wer zweimal hintereinander oder dreimal in 5 Jahren den ersten Platz belegt.
