General summary
Vocational training in Switzerland provides young people with an introduction to working and professional life and
ensures the supply of future generations of specialist personnel. It is coordinated with the requirements of the labour
market and is an integral part of the education system.
In terms of the Vocational Training Act dated 1 January 2004, basic vocational training enables broad-based
vocational development to be pursued up to University of Applied Science or university level.
Training with a practical focus in 13 different occupations is available at ETH Zurich. Some 170 apprentices and trainees
are currently undergoing training in various institutes, departments and administrative units. Apprentices receive
professional basic training in ETH’s own biology, chemistry and electronics training laboratories.
Most of those entering basic training are between 16 and 18 years of age, and at least one-fifth of them are between 19
and 25 years old. Vocational training programmes last 3 or 4 years, depending on the occupation, and are recognised by
the Swiss federal government. Vocational training programmes start and end in mid-August. ETH continually tries to
increase the number of training positions. Its aim is to enable apprenticeship training at ETH for as many young people
as possible.

A regulation approved by the Executive Board of ETH («Schulleitung») on 14 December 1999 defines the aims,
organisation and financial resources for the professional training of apprentices (PTA) at ETH Zurich

Allgemeines im Überblick
Die schweizerische Berufsbildung ermöglicht den Jugendlichen den Einstieg in die Arbeits- und Berufswelt und sorgt für
den Nachwuchs an qualifizierten Fachkräften. Sie ist arbeitsmarktbezogen und Teil des Bildungssystems.
Mit dem Berufsbildungsgesetz vom 1.1.2004 ermöglicht die berufliche Grundbildung seine breite berufliche Entwicklung bis
hin zur Fachhoch- oder zur Hochschule.
An der ETH Zürich können 13 verschiedene Berufe auf praxisorientiertem Weg erlernt werden. So werden gegenwärtig
rund 150 Lernende und Praktikanten in verschiedenen Instituts-, Departements- und Verwaltungseinheiten, in eigenen
Lehr-labors ausgebildet.
Die meisten Grundbildungsanfänger/innen sind bei Eintritt zwischen 16 und 18 Jahre jung, gut ein Fünftel ist zwischen
19 und 25 Jahre alt. Die Berufsbildung dauert je nach Berufsrichtung 3 oder 4 Jahre und ist eidgenössisch anerkannt. Lehr-
beginn und Lehrabschluss erfolgen jeweils Mitte August. Die Berufsbildung der ETH Zürich ist fortwährend daran, neue
Ausbildungsplätze zu finden. Das Ziel ist es, möglichst vielen jungen Menschen eine Ausbildung an der ETH Zürich anbieten
zu können.

All apprentices have to attend the respective vocational school (1-2 days per week, depending on the chosen occupation)
in the Canton of Zurich. In addition, they can attend the higher level «Berufsmittelschule (BMS)» on an optional basis. The
BMS certificate allows them access to Universities of Applied Sciences or business schools after finishing their professional
training.
Finances, Positions
The salaries of the apprentices and the number of positions are granted by ETH’s Executive Board through a global PTA-
budget allocated each year. The same holds for the maintenance of the existing PTA-infrastructure, such as the teaching
laboratories and workshops, as well as for the salaries of the professional instructors. Therefore, these issues do not burden
other budgets, nor do they affect the number of positions allocated to the chairs, institutes and departments involved.
Infrastructure and materials are made available to each apprentice at his/her respective workplace.

Alle Lernenden müssen die Berufsfachschule besuchen (je nach Beruf 1-2 Tage pro Woche). Bei guten Leistungen und
bestandener Aufnahmeprüfung können Sie auch die Berufsmittelschule (BMS) absolvieren, welche sich auf ein höheres
Niveau stützt. Der Abschluss der BMS erlaubt den Absolventen nach der Lehre den Zugang zu den Fachhochschulen und mit
einer Passerelle zu den Universitäten und Hochschulen.
Finanzierung, Stellenkontingente
Die Lernendenlöhne und Stellenkontigente werden zentral über ein von der Schulleitung gesprochenes Globalbudget
bereitgestellt, belasten die Professuren, Institute, Departemente oder Verwaltungseinheiten also nicht, ebenso wenig
wie die bestehende Infrastruktur (Lehrlabors, Lehrwerkstätten, Löhne des professionellen Instruktionspersonals, etc.). Am
Ausbildungsplatz stellen die Institutionen die notwendigen Einrichtungen und Materialien zur Verfügung.
