We are in the XXl century and the ambition of a shoe is evermore determined by its make up: fashion/style, ergonomics/ comfort, hygiene/health, protection/ safety. There is no choice: these four factors/keys must necessarily work together, in perfect synergy; and we must put them together in a product in order to determine its success. 17/DIKE//LADY D. LADY D. FASHION BLOGGER, HARD WORKER. There’s no doubt that, in Italy, a motorcycle is “la moto”, that is, feminine. And that, least for me, it really is female. What is important is the style, and that applies to everything. Running around on high heels is a challenge, but then so is designing a customized motorcycle, one that is perfectly shaped and graced with a subtle dynamic balance. And so, every day, I find a new way to enjoy this great passion of mine. I couldn’t tell you if I get a greater kick out of combining original accessories and outfits or out of hurdling full speed down the track. Or if I get a greater thrill out of the deep vibrations of the engine or whether it’s the aroma of the hot oil I smell as I fine tune the carburettor of the latest bike I’ve made. Maybe it’s a combination of all of these things. I run as I am, simply. A bit fashion, a bit biker, a bit blogger and a bit Dike. And I have a thousand ideas in my head. FASHION BLOGGER, HARD WORKER. Das Motorrad ist zweifellos mit einer Frau zu vergleichen. Und meiner Meinung nach ist es auch feminin. Wie in allen Dingen ist der Stil von Bedeutung. Auf Schuhen mit hohen Absätzen zu laufen ist eine Herausforderung, genauso wie die Entwicklung eines maßgeschneiderten Motorrads, mit perfekter Form und dynamischen Gleichgewicht. Jeden Tag lasse ich mich von neuen Ideen inspirieren mit denen ich meine Leidenschaft lebe. Ich kann gar nicht sagen, was mir lieber ist, die Zusammenstellung von Zubehör und originellen Outfits oder das Rasen über die Piste. Den rassigen Vibrationen eines Motors lauschen, in der Werkstatt den Geruch des verbrannten Öls genießen, wenn ich den Vergaser des letzten von mir geschaffenen Customs einstelle. All diese Eindrücke wecken in mir die Magie. Mein Fahrstil ähnelt meinem “Ich”, einfach. Etwas Fashion, ein bisschen Biker, ein bisschen Blogger, ein bisschen Dike. Mit tausenden Ideen im Kopf.

I train them to show off their most deeply hidden talents. And I do all this in a little garden I made, a garden of human dimensions for me and for them. But simply growing plants is not enough: every tree has its own habitat, every bush is an indispensible link that completes the puzzle of a specific landscape. You have to speak the language of plants. When people ask me to create a garden for them I listen to the voice of the space I’m given to fill, I try to understand which vibrations might bring about a greater harmony, and only then do I pick the plants and flowers destined to live there. I do it with passion, with my Dike on my feet, hugging my trees, every single day. DIE GEHEIME SPRACHE DER GÄRTEN Meine Eltern haben Tiere gezüchtet. Ich züchte Pflanzen, das heißt ich “erziehe” sie und arbeite ihre verborgenen Talente heraus. Ich lebe in einer grünen Umgebung die ich mir und ihnen geschaffen habe. Sie zu züchten ist aber nicht ausreichend: Jeder Baum hat seinen Lebensraum, jeder Busch ist ein unentbehrliches Mosaiksteinchen des Puzzles einer spezifischen Landschaft. Die Sprache der Pflanzen zu sprechen ist von grundlegender Bedeutung. Wenn man mich beauftragt einen Garten zu gestalten, dann lausche ich der “Stimme” des Ortes, ich versuche zu verstehen, welche Vibrationen Harmonie erzeugen, dann wähle ich die Pflanzen und Blumen die perfekt zu der Erde passen. Ich arbeite mit Leidenschaft und mit meinen Dike an den Füßen umarme ich täglich mei- ne Bäume.

BUT WHAT IF THE CREATIVE PERSON WERE A BREEDER?
I used to live in the city, I was an urban creature. The city gave me my rhythm, all I had to do was be there. But then I felt a need for change. I was drawn
to the countryside, I threw myself headlong into it, and in it I found my space. I think of myself as a non-conventional creative type. I make good things.
And I decide how and when. From prosciutto to lamb chops, eggs to roasts, and even pasta and beans: it all comes from passion. And I give them all the
time they need. I am moved when I watch the animals roaming about at pasture on my land, surrounded by all that green. They are there for our
pleasure, but we are responsible for their lives. So if my pigs are happy, if they assimilate all the good things around them, then my ham reflects it.
Today I’m busy with a project in the kitchen: to give the greatest flavour to and make to perfection the most common dishes. It’s like putting on a pair of
shoes, a pair of Dike.
UND WENN DER KREATIVE EIN ZÜCHTER IST?
Vorher habe ich in der Stadt gelebt, wir waren eine Einheit, sie hat den Rhythmus vorgegeben und ich habe mich diesem angepasst. Dann habe ich
mich für eine Veränderung entschieden. Ich bin aufs Land gezogen, habe mich meiner neuen Umgebung vollständig hingegeben und meinen
idealen Lebensraum gefunden. Ich definiere mich selbst als
unkonventionellen Kreativen. Ich kreiere Gutes. Wie und wann,
bestimme nur ich. Vom Schinken bis hin zum Rippenstück, vom
Ei zum Braten, bis hin zu “Paste e Fagioli” (kurze Nudeln mit
Bohnen). All dies entspringt der Leidenschaft. Mit der notwen-
digen Zeit. Die Tiere auf meinem Land im Grünen weiden und
laufen zu sehen berührt mich. Sie dienen unserem Lebensge-
nuss und wir sind für sie verantwortlich. Geht es den Schweinen
gut, wenn sie in ihrem Leben von Schönheit umgeben werden,
dann findet man dies im Schinken wieder. Ich habe ein Konzept
für die Küche ausgearbeitet: Banale Dinge perfekt umzusetzen,
mit besten Ergebnissen, ist wie das Tragen von Schuhen,

I think it all starts with Love. The fuel is enthusiasm mixed with amazement for everything around me. It’s the light, sound, materials and colours. Even used things, things thrown away that, for me, are an infinite source of fascination and a source of inspiration. My paintings and sculptures are often based on the leftovers from someone else’s production processes, I transform them into something else and give them a second chance at life with a brand new look. I hate waste. “I see myself as a sort of alchemist, I retrace the edges of ruins, I sew them together with colours and sutures of iron reality. Spaces and moments from no-man’s life, guilty of having belonged to everyone.” As a child I spent my days drawing, modelling and assembling objects. Then there was Art School and the Academy. But one thing has never changed, I continue to craft a world as I see it, with a different, extraordinary and original dimension… just like my Dike. Ich glaube, dass alles mit Liebe beginnt. Der Treibstoff ist das Erstaunen im Mix mit der Begeisterung für alles was uns umgibt. Das Licht, der Klang, die Materialien, die Farben. Genutzte Gegenstände, die zu “Abfall” werden, sind für mich von unerschöpflichem Interesse und Inspirationsquelle. Meine Malerei und meine Skulpturen lassen sich von den Ausstoßprodukten des Produktionsprozesses beeinflussen, ich verleihe ihnen ein “zweites Leben” mit einer neuen ästhetischen Grammatik. Verschwendung gefällt mir nicht. “Ich sehe mich als eine Art Alchemist, ich taste die Grenzen der Relikte ab und flicke mit Farbe und Eisennahtstellen Gegenstände der Realität. Räume und Momente aus dem Leben Unbekannter, deren “Schuld” es ist, allen gehört zu haben”. Als Kind verbrachte ich meine Zeit mit Zeichnen, Modellieren und dem Zusammenbau. Dann habe ich die Kunstschule und die Akademie besucht. Aber ich habe nie aufgehört die Welt mit meinen Augen zu sehen, in einer anderen, unglaublichen und originellen Dimension ... genau wie meine Dike.

I’M HYPERACTIVE AND MY WOOD IS ALIVE Wood is a living thing. The intense aroma of a freshly cut tree, the thick droplet of resin that drips onto sticky fingers. A tree is the guardian of the secret history of its land and every ring in its trunk recounts a year in its life. I thought being a biologist was enough, but then I had to learn the art of carving wood, of carpentry. Because giving shape to that which a piece of wood is destined to become is a true craft. It’s my chosen trade. Every day I breathe new life into this wonderfully pure material, bringing it back as a chair, a chest, as any other useful object. Or I work with old pieces, pieces which, as I work on them, resound with the echoes of times past, offering a singsong of voices that harmonises with the rhythm of the strokes of my sandpaper. And then I pause and realise it’s time to do something else, like eat something good. There’s another of my great passions, but that’s a whole other story, as they say. Ein Baum hegt die geheime Geschichte seiner Erde, die Jahresringe des Stamms erzählen von der Reise eines gesamten Jahres. Ich dachte mir würde es reichen Biologe zu sein, aber dann musste ich auch den Beruf des Schreiners erlernen. Dem Stück Holz die von ihm gewünschte Form zu verleihen ist eine Berufung. Mein Beruf. Täglich verleihe ich der puren Materie ein neues Leben, sie wird zu einem Stuhl, einer Truhe und vielem mehr. Ich erneuere aber auch Erinnerungen vergangener Zeiten, dabei kann ich das Echo der Vergangenheit in einer Art gestörter Frequenz wahrnehmen, wie ein Stimmengewirr, das meine Schleifarbeiten untermalt. Das ist das Signal, das mich meine Arbeiten unterbrechen lässt, um anderes zu tun, zum Beispiel kochen. Eine weitere Leidenschaft, aber das ist eine andere Geschichte. Die Geschichte eines Menschen der sich in ständiger Bewegung befindet. Eine Dike Geschichte.

My name is Zenone Guerra and I started out as an apprentice to the town’s blacksmith when I was thirteen. I would go get the day’s coal in a wheelbarrow, with any old shoes on my feet. Not exactly Dike! Then I opened up my own shop with my brother Nicola. And then my other two brothers, Antonio and Orfeo, joined us. Together we work iron, steel, aluminium and titanium. It’s hard work, you have to be very precise, but over the years we’ve had a lot of great ideas that we managed to sell in Italy and abroad. From bell towers in Padua to skyscrapers in Dubai and buildings on the streets of New York. We all share the same inspiration, often at the same time, a bit like music, but each of us sings with his own special voice. We kid around a lot, we laugh. We have fun. Because doing something well and getting along means you can always earn a good living, especially with a great pair of Dike on your feet! (VIER) METALL-INSPIRATIONEN. Ich heiße Zenone Guerra, mit dreizehn Jahren habe ich als Geselle bei dem Schmied im Ort angefangen. Mit einer Schubkarre habe ich Kohle geholt und nur notdürftige Schuhe getragen, die man sicher nicht mit den Dike vergleichen kann! Später habe ich mit meinem Bruder Nicola meine Werkstatt eröffnet. Dann kamen die beiden anderen Brüder Antonio und Orfeo hinzu. Wir bearbeiten Eisen, Stahl, Aluminium, Titan. Unsere Arbeit ist anstrengend und bedarf höchster Präzision, in den Jahren unsere Aktivität haben wir in Italien, wie im Ausland viele Ideen umgesetzt. Von den Glockentürmen Paduas, bis hin zu den Wolkenkratzern Dubais und den Straßen von New York. Wie eine Musik werden wir vier von derselben Inspiration erfasst, nur spielt dabei jeder ein anderes Instrument. Wir veräppeln uns und lachen. Wir haben Spaß. Fleiß, gute Arbeit und ein gutes Miteinander zahlen sich immer aus, vor allem mit guten Schuhen von Dike an den Füßen!

Unsere Liebe für das Barbecue ist eigentlich aus Spaß entstanden, wurde aber schon bald zu einer wahren Leidenschaft, die wir in die Welt exportieren. Mit unserem Laster, immer mit neuen Ideen bepackt. Das Essen ist wie das Leben: Um es gebührend zu genießen, muss man die richtigen Zutaten wählen und Zeit aufwenden. Essen ist eine Beziehung, man verbringt Zeit miteinander, nährt die Seele und das Vergnügen. In Freundschaft. Wir dachten, dass nur wenige diesen Gedanken mit uns teilen, als wir aber unseren Winter Extreme Grill, ein Barbecue-Wettbewerb in Höhenlage, organisiert haben, haben sich hunderte Teilnehmer aus aller Welt dieser Herausforderung gestellt. Ein Wettbewerb im Zeichen der Holzkohle und mit einem Dike-Nachgeschmack.
