Grußwort des Schulleiters
Sehr geehrte Eltern, liebe Schülerinnen und Schüler, liebe Lehrkräfte und Angestellte
der DSJ,
ich begrüße Sie zum letzten Newsletter des ersten Schulhalbjahres 2019. Wie
üblich waren die letzten Wochen des Halbjahres wieder sehr hektisch mit
vielen Konferenzen und Veranstaltungen. Insgesamt haben wir in der Grund-
und Sekundarschule über 8000 Noten berechnet und beschlossen, sowie 826
Zeugnisse ausgestellt.
Nach der Einführung von Lernentwicklungsgesprächen im Kindergarten und in
der Grundschule haben wir diese als Pilotprojekt nun auch in der 5. Klasse
durchgeführt und werden diese im 2. Schulhalbjahr evaluieren.
Die größte Schulveranstaltung war unser Schulbasar mit 8.300 Gästen und ich möchte mich bei allen
Beteiligten herzlich für ihr Engagement und Unterstützung bedanken. Leider liegen noch keine endgültigen
Daten hinsichtlich des Umsatzes und des Gewinns vor.
Weitere nennenswerte Ereignisse waren unsere traditionelle Literaturwoche, eine Podiumsdiskussion mit
der Konrad-Adenauer- und der Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung anlässlich des 70. Jahrestages des deutschen
Grundgesetztes und natürlich die ausverkauften Theatervorführungen unserer Theatergruppe.
Darüber hinaus fanden am 13. Mai eine außerordentliche Mitgliederversammlung mit der Wahl des neuen
Vorstands statt und am 12. Juni die ordentliche Mitgliederversammlung mit der Bestätigung aller
Vorstandsmitglieder.
Ebenfalls am 12. Juni wurde in einer konstituierenden Sitzung und mit Unterstützung der Schweizer
Botschaft der Schweizer Verein der DSJ gegründet und zugleich ein Kooperationsvertrag mit unserer
Schule geschlossen. Herr Organ ist Vorsitzender, Frau Tyler Sekretärin und Schatzmeisterin sowie Frau
Valjalo-Kruse Projektkoordinatorin.
Am 11. Juni fand die AGM der Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Deutsche Erziehung statt, Herr von Kettelhodt und
Herr Endres wurden bestätigt, Herr Gutmayer und Herr Schröder neu in den Vorstand gewählt. Wir freuen
uns auf eine gute Zusammenarbeit mit den beiden, uns verbundenen Institutionen.
Bedanken möchte ich mich bei unserem Elternbeirat, die unseren Sozialfond mit einer großzügigen Spende
unterstützt haben und beglückwünschen darf ich Elizabeth McQuarrie, eine NPS-Schülerin aus der Klasse
11a, die aufgrund ihrer herausragenden Leistungen aus hunderten von Bewerbern für einen
Deutschlandaufenthalt an der Schülerakademie ausgewählt wurde.
Abschließend wünsche ich Ihnen allen erholsame Ferien, freue mich auf ein Wiedersehen im 2. Halbjahr

Greetings from our School Principal
Dear DSJ Community,
I would like to welcome you to the last newsletter of the
first half of 2019. The last few weeks were again filled with
many conferences and events. In total, we calculated and
decided on more than 8000 grades in primary and
secondary school and issued 826 school reports.
After the introduction of learning development talks in the Kindergarten and primary school, we have
now also carried them out as a pilot project in the 5th grade and will evaluate them in the 2nd half of
the school year.
The biggest school event was our Schulbasar with 8,300 guests, and I would like to thank all participants
for their commitment and support. No final sales and profit figures are available as yet.
Other notable events included our traditional Literature Week, a panel discussion with the Konrad
Adenauer Foundation and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the
German Constitution and, of course, the sold-out theatre performances of our theatre group.
In addition, an extraordinary general meeting with the election of the new Board members took place
on 13 May and the annual general meeting with the confirmation of all executive committee members
took place on 12 June.
Also on 12 June, in a constituent meeting and, with the support of the Swiss Embassy, the Swiss
Association of the DSJ was founded and at the same time a cooperation agreement was concluded with
our school. Mr. Organ is the Chairman, Mrs. Tyler the Secretary and Treasurer and Mrs. Valjalo-Kruse is
the Project Coordinator.
On 11 June the AGM of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Deutsche Erziehung took place, Mr von Kettelhodt
and Mr Endres were confirmed as board members and Mr Gutmayer and Mr Schröder were newly
elected to the board. We look forward to a good cooperation with the two institutions associated with
the school.
I would like to thank our Parent Representative Council, which supported our social fund with a
generous donation. I would also like to congratulate Elizabeth McQuarrie, an NPS student from class
11a, who was selected from hundreds of applicants for her outstanding achievements to visit the
Schülerakademie in Germany.
Finally, I wish you all a relaxing holiday and look forward to seeing you in the second half of the year.

NACHRICHTEN AUS DEM PERSONALZIMMER
With the second term coming to an end we have to say farewell to six DSJ staff members: Ms Jenny, Mrs Rim-
mer, Mr Roth, Ms Beesteboer, Ms Wilcox and Mr Cameron will leave the DSJ to pursue new paths. We thank
them for their service and wish them all the best for the future.
With the beginning of the third term we welcome Ms Tanya Ginsberg as
our new finance controller and Mrs Ann Topp will take over as a biology
teacher in secondary school until the end of the year.

NACHRICHTEN AUS DER GRUNDSCHULE
Liebe Eltern,
das 1. Halbjahr des Schuljahres 2019 ist fast geschafft. Unsere Schülerinnen und Schüler haben fleißig gelernt und sehr
ansprechende Ergebnisse erzielt. Die wohlverdienten Winterferien stehen vor der Tür.
In den 1. Klassen fanden die Lernentwicklungsgespräche erfolgreich statt. Vielen Dank, liebe Eltern, dass Sie die Gelegenheit
gemeinsam mit Ihrem Kind wahrgenommen haben, sich in einem vertrauensvollen Gespräch über den Lern- und Entwick-
lungsfortschritt Ihres Kindes auszutauschen.
Liebe Eltern, das gesamte Grundschulteam möchte sich bei Ihnen recht herzlich für Ihre großzügige sowie tatkräftige Unter-
stützung zu unserem Schulbasar bedanken. Auch in diesem Jahr war der Schulbasar für alle Beteiligten ein lohnendes und
schönes Event.
Wie in jedem Jahr fand auch in diesem Jahr unser Spielefest für die Vorschulkinder und alle Schülerinnen und Schüler der
Grundschule am Mittwoch, 12.06.2019 statt. Gemeinsam verbrachten wir einen sportlichen und erlebnisreichen Vormittag
mit vielfältigen sowie lustigen Betätigungen.
Am Ende des 2. Quartals wird Frau Hanna Jenny leider unsere Schule verlassen, da sie in die Schweiz zurückkehren wird. Wir
bedauern den Weggang Frau Jennys sehr und danken ihr recht herzlich für ihre engagierte Arbeit. Wir wünschen Frau Hanna
Jenny alles Gute für ihre weitere berufliche Laufbahn.
Verstärkung bekommt unser Grundschulteam mit Beginn des 3. Quartals durch Frau Birgit Majchrzak. Frau Birgit Majchrzak
hat bereits schon einmal 19 Jahre an unserer Schule unterrichtet. Wir freuen uns sehr, dass wir sie wieder in unseren Reihen
als Kollegin begrüßen dürfen.
Am Freitag, 14.06.2019 findet 08:30 Uhr unsere Assembly zum Abschluss des 1. Schulhalbjahres statt. Dazu laden wir Sie,

The first half year of 2019 is almost over. Our children have worked diligently and have achieved great results. The well-
deserved winter holidays are near.
The Grade 1 teacher parent and child development talks have successfully been completed. Many thanks to the parents, for
giving up valuable time, to discuss matters with your child, this is greatly appreciated.
The Primary school team would like to extend their thanks to all families for the wonderful support given at the Schulbasar.
It was again a successful and memorable day.
As in previous years our Spielefest takes place with the Primary School and Grade R children. This took place on Wednesday
12 June 2019 and we had a wonderful day of good sportsmanship and activities.
At the end of the second term we sadly bid farewell to Frau Jenny, who will return to Switzerland. We thank her for her
contributions and wish her well.
To strengthen our Primary School Team we welcome back Frau Birgit Majchrzak who has previously worked at the DSJ for
19 years. We are happy to have her back and wish her much happiness here.
You are invited to our end of term assembly on Friday 14 June 2019; it will be lovely to have you there.

MUSIKANGEBOT AN DER DSJ
Liebe Eltern,
wegen wachsender Nachfrage hat sich die Fachschaft Musik bemüht einen weiteren Gitarrenlehrer in das
Musikzentrum der DSJ aufzunehmen. Wir freuen uns Govinda Davidopoulos im Team begrüßen zu dürfen.
Herr Davidopoulos hat sowohl Klassische und Jazz-Gitarre als auch Flamenco Gitarre studiert und leitet seit
1996 seine eigene Musikschule. Sein Unterricht erfolgt auf Englisch.

Dear parents,
due to increasing requests the Music department has engaged another guitar
teacher. We are happy to welcome Govinda Davidopoulos as part of the DSJ music
centre. Mr. Davidopoulos‘ expertise comprises studies in the field of Classical and
Jazz guitar as well as the Flamenco guitar. Since 1996 he runs his own music
school. His lessons will be in english.

NEWS FROM THE PREFECT ROOM
As a prefect team, we try to encourage the learners of the school to give back to the community. In order to do this
we have several permanent projects running, namely:
Clothes Drive is a project run by the prefects to help learners who need a helping hand with getting school
clothing and normal clothes. Learners at school are asked to donate any clothing they are not using to the prefect
team. These clothes are at the disposal of any learner struggling to afford clothes. If they ask a prefect the prefect
will supply them with the article they need from the clothes donated by other learners. Please hand in any un-
wanted (but in good condition) clothing to the DSJ reception for the “Attention of the Prefects”.
Food Drive is a monthly food gathering project run by the prefect team. Each class has a list of non-perishable
food items they need to bring to the prefects by the end of the month. The prefects take all the food donated to a
needy charity organisation, such as the Guild cottage right next to Milpark hospital.
Bottle Cap Drive is a continuous project run by the prefect team. We are collecting bottle caps and bread tags for
the Sweethearts organisation. When the school has collected enough bread tags and bottle caps the organisation
donates a wheelchair to a child that otherwise would be unable to afford it. This project is important and cheap, as
it does not cost those donating anything, other than the lids and tags they have already paid for. Bottle caps and
bread tags can be placed in the bins provided near the library.

#Basar19 THANK YOU!
As has become the norm in the recent past, the weather provided us with a few last-minute concerns, but come
Saturday 25 May 2019, these worries dissipated for what turned out to be a wonderful 112th Annual Schulbasar!
Each Schulbasar presents its own challenges and 2019 proved to be no different. There was a great deal of
uncertainty in the build-up, both from within and externally, with the national elections and South Africa’s dire
economy being the main factors.
This year’s attendance totalled 8302, which is almost identical to 2018’s figure of 8382. Interestingly, we were able
to increase sales on the ground on the day by over R250 000, which is something that we are happy about. Judging
by the feedback from our visitors and guests, most folks had a wonderful time at the event.
The importance of the Schulbasar cannot be emphasized enough. It remains the school’s single biggest fundraiser.
It is also our biggest community builder. We are able to showcase our wonderful school to the greater Johannes-
burg population and it also serves as one of the rare moments when the WHOLE community works together for
the sole benefit of the school.
A day of such magnitude would not be possible without the support of the whole DSJ community, for this I am
immensely grateful. I would like to thank all staff and especially my fellow Administration team members for their
work. There is a team of people who need to be recognised for their efforts, those who were involved throughout
the project. I would like to thank Annette Holtmann, Fred Stone, Pam Johannsen, Olaf Schaum, Gayle Wilcox and
Mariska Van Wyngaard for their mammoth contributions to #Basar19. Last but not least, a special mention of the
DSJ Maintenance Team as well as the ladies from Guaranteed Clean, who did a sterling job throughout.
Finally, my sincere gratitude to our sponsors for making #Basar19 an event to remember. On this note, we would
also like to thank all our Raffle Draw sponsors, this year we managed to generate over R112 000 in profit.
While the event might be finished, we are still finalising our financials so stay posted for the official
announcement!

The new PRC voted in February have had a busy first half of 2019.
Our first project, initiated by the previous PRC, was to distribute sun hats to the Grade 1 chil-
dren to promote sun awareness. While the sunhats are not a formal part of the school uni-
form, we encourage all the primary school children to keep safe from the sun, and will be rolling this initiative
out to future Grade 1 classes at the start of each year.
At this year’s Schulbasar, the PRC sponsored cash prizes for the 3 best class stands. The judging was done by
anonymous, independent judges, based on criteria including presentation, product and sustainability.
We are pleased to announce that the winners for 2019 are:

2 – Grade 11b Rapisplash (Mrs Young)
3 – Grade 8c - Kartoffelpuffer (Frau Bachmeier)
This year’s Family Day has been moved forward to Saturday 24th
August. We hope this will give us clear skies for a fun family day
out. This is a day just for the DSJ family, a thank you from the PRC
to the parents for all the hard work done at the Basar, and we are
working on improving the experience year on year. Please book
the date in your diaries now! If you are interested in having a product stall or second-hand stall at the Family
Day, please contact us on prc@dsjmail.co.za
The PRC’s biggest source of funding for all these initiatives is the income from the MySchool reward card. We
encourage all parents to register for a card, and if you already have a card, please remember to swipe for the
school as often as you can.

The next blood donation drive will be on 1 August 2019 in the DSJ
Foyer from 12h00 to 15h00. Please make yourselves available for
this life saving cause.
A main function of the PRC is to facilitate communication between
the parents and the school. If you have any queries, comments or
