Mizrahi Studien sind ein relativ junges Teilgebiet der Jüdischen Studien, in dem es darum geht, den Geschichten und Kulturen
von Juden in der arabischen Welt eine Stimme zu geben, die ihnen in den klassischen und zumeist aschkenasisch geprägten
Instituten für Jüdische Studien lange verwehrt blieb. In dem Seminar diskutieren wir, wie dieses Teilgebiet seit den 1970er
Jahren in Israel entstand und welche Forschungsdiskussionen heute in ihm geführt werden. Dabei geht es vor allem um
wissenschaftshistorische Trends und Entwicklungen, die an ausgewählten Themenfeldern und Beispielen (z.T. auch aus der
Vormoderne) verdeutlicht werden.
Mizrahi Studies is relatively a young branch in the field of Jewish Studies concentrating on the history and culture of Jews
in the Arabic world. As such, Mizrahi Studies seeks to recover a voice that was largely absent from the classical and mostly
Ashkenazic orientation of Jewish Studies. This seminar revolves around the questions how this sub-field was established in
Israel since the 1970’s and what research discussions are carried out today. The scientific-historical trends and developments
will be discussed and illustrated vis-a-vis specific topics and examples (including from the premodern world).

Kriterien für das erfolgreiche Bestehen der Veranstaltung sind
1) die Lektüre der Literaturen, die auf Moodle zur Verfügung gestellt werden
2) die fristgerechte Abgabe sinnvoller Antworten (max. 1 page) auf die zu jeder Doppelsitzung gestellte Frage.
The requirements for passing this seminar successfully (Bestanden) are:
1) reading the essays assigned for each session (which will be available in Moodle) and engaging in class discussion.
2) timely submission of the written responses (max. one page) to the question for each meeting.

Bemerkung
Die Veranstaltung wird z.T. diachron und z.T. synchron als Zoom-Seminar stattfinden. Jede Doppelsitzung wird zu den
angekündigten Terminen als 90-minütige Zoom-Sitzung mit einer Einführung in den Wochenschwerpunkt, einer Diskussion
der Lektüre und einem Einblick in die entsprechende Quelle eingeleitet. In den folgenden 90 Minuten lesen Sie die Quelle
alleine weiter und beantworten auf einer knappen Seite ein bis zwei Fragen, die die Dozentinnen stellen und später
korrigieren.
The lectures in this zoom seminar will take place both diachronically and synchronized via Zoom. Each double session
will begin with a Zoom meeting (90 minutes) including a short introduction to the week's topic and a discussion of the text
assigned for this session. In the second part of the meeting (the following 90 minutes) the students will be assigned a writing
task, i.e. reading a short source related to the week’s topic and writing a brief report (one page) interpreting it in light of the
main questions that were raised in class.
Te readings will be in English. The discussions and papers can be either in English or in German, depending on the students's
preferences. Students who register will receive the invitation for the meetings.
Meetings are scheduled for: April 13; April 27; May 11; May 25; June 8; June 22; July 6; July 20.

This course is intended for advanced students, i.e. for students which have the ability to understand the original texts from
the Hebrew Bible, Mishnah, Tosefta, Talmud, Rambam and Shulhan Arukh in the Hebrew original sources (the booklet of
the sources is in Hebrew, although during the reading we would translate the texts into English for the sake of those who
have difficulty in understanding the text). The example that will serve us as a case-study in this course would be the law in
Deuteronomy 19, 14: "Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance,
which thou shalt inherit in the land that the Lord thy God given thee to possess it".
The course will be conducted in English, accompanied by Hebrew texts.

Zu Beginn des Seminars werden die Begriffe Polytheismus, Monotheismus, Henotheismus Monolatrie und andere Termini
kritisch gesichtet und auf neuere Monotheismus-Konzeptionen im Rahmen des Alten Orients bezogen. Im Anschluss daran
soll durch die Arbeit an biblischen Texten, außerbiblischen Inschriften und ikonographischen Zeugnissen (Reihenfolge?)
erörtert werden, wie sich im Zusammenhang verschiedener sozioreligiöser Kontexte (‚Familienreligion‘, ‚offizielle Religion‘
u.a.) höchst unterschiedliche Gottesvorstellungen entwickelt haben. War der Gott Israels ursprünglich ein Wetter-, Wüsten-
oder Berggott? Hatte er eine Paredra (Aschera)? War er zunächst eine unter vielen Gottheiten und seine Macht nur auf
das Land Israel bezogen und dabei ausschließlich ein Gott der Lebenden und nicht der Toten? Wurde er an verschiedenen
Orten unterschiedlich verehrt? Seit wann kann man von einem sog. Nationalgott sprechen, seit wann von einer Forderung
ausschließlicher Verehrung? Im Blick auf die Beantwortung dieser Fragen soll im Seminar schließlich herausgearbeitet
werden, ob und wenn ja, in welcher Zeit und unter welchen Voraussetzungen von einem praktischen bzw. impliziten oder
einem inklusiven bzw. exklusiven Monotheismus die Rede sein kann und was das für die Theologie- und Religionsgschichte
bedeutet. Zum Schluss könnte eine Diskussion um den Streit über einen Zusammenhang von Monotheismus und Gewalt (Jan
Assmann) geführt werden.

Matthias Köckert, Vom einen zum einzigen Gott. Zur Diskussion der Religionsgeschichte Israels, in: Berliner Theologische
Zeitschrift 15 (1998), 137-175. Viele Aspekte werden in dem Sammelband: Der eine Gott und die Götter. Polytheismus und
Monotheismu im antiken Israel, hg. von Manfred Oeming und Konrad Schmid (ThWANT 8), Zürich 2003, behandelt.
Leistungsnachweis
Leistungspunkte für ein Referat bzw. einen Essay oder für eine Seminararbeit. Regelmäßige Teilnahme wird erwartet.

The religious landscape of contemporary American Judaism is highly diverse, ranging from idiosyncratic efforts to create
spiritual niches for individual needs to claims by a reinvigorated Orthodoxy to shape growing communities and the lives of their
members. In between, other traditional expressions of Judaism, the liberal denominations, struggle, more or less successfully,
to retain their particular religious ideologies as a basis for their institutional structures. – The seminar offers a survey of
the contemporary landscape of religious Judaism in the US, tracing the developments leading up to the current moment in
American Jewish history and developments in American society at large.
Readings : Jack Wertheimer’s The New American Judaism: How Jews Practice Their Religion Today will be our primary
reading, complemented by other texts on specific subjects.
Credit requirements : Active participation based on the readings; a brief introduction to one week’s readings with questions
guiding our discussions; a paper of ab. 20,000 characters, analyzing an additional sources and reflecting on a topic related to
the class.

Abraham Heschel in God in Search of Man (1955) writes: ”Providence may some day create a situation which would place
us between the river Jordan and the river Ganges, and the problem of such an encounter will be different from that which
Jewish thought underwent when meeting with Greek philosophy.” (p. 15). We do not know if this is the act of providence ,
but the interest in the religions of the far East (especially Hinduism and Buddhism) among contemporary Jewish thinkers and
the amount of research on the subject indicate that the problem and challenge of this fruitful encounter are already present.
In this seminar, we will discuss the approaches of Leo Beck, Franz Rosenzweig, Martin Buber, and others to Buddhism and
Hinduism in light of contemporary research.
The Seminar will be conducted in English.

Das Verhältnis von Religion und Politik, von Staat und Kirche ist ein zugleich uraltes und brandaktuelles Thema. An
der Schwelle zur Moderne und Säkularisierung haben zwei jüdische Vordenker das theologisch-politische Problem in
epochemachenden Werken traktiert: Baruch (auch Bento oder Benedictus) Spinoza (1632-177) im Tractatus Theologico-
Politicus (1670) und Moses Mendelssohn (1729-1786) in Jerusalem oder religiöse Macht und Judentum (1783). Beide
Schriften treten für die Trennung von Staat und Kirche und für Toleranz und bürgerliche Freiheiten ein. Insbesondere
fordern beide die Abschaffung des Synagogenbanns. Während ihre theologisch-politische Stoßrichtung ähnlich ist, verlief
ihre persönliche Geschichte konträr: Spinoza ist vom Judentum abgefallen und 1656 von der Synagoge verbannt worden.
Sein Traktat ist auch eine heftige antijüdische Polemik und die Geburtsurkunde der historisch-kritischen Bibelwissenschaft.
Während Mendelssohn zum Sprecher der Juden wurde und sein Jerusalem die Grundschrift des modernen Judentums ist.
Das komplexe Verhältnis dieser beiden Denker ist bis heute ein aufregendes wissenschaftliches Rätsel. Im Seminar sollen
vor allem ihre theologisch-politischen Konstellationen und Konzeptionen verglichen und insbesondere ihre Positionen zur
jüdischen Theokratie geklärt werden.

POSTPONED TO WINTER TERM!
Orthodox Judaism claims that its only platform is the Torah itself. The Conservative movement was in existence for three
generations before it finally created its only set of principles in 1988. But in American Reform Judaism we have had no less
than four platforms following an initial set of principles--mostly denying the legitimacy of Orthodoxy--in 1869. There have
been the Pittsburgh Platform of 1885, the Columbus Platform of 1937, the San Francisco Centennial Statement of 1976, and
the current Statement of Principles, adopted once again in Pittsburgh, in 1999. Why has the Reform movement needed to
define and redefine itself so often? What purpose does a platform serve? Like a political platform, a religious platform sets out
positions on issues, except in this case the "planks" are not on such matters as domestic or foreign policy. Instead, they are
usually positions on the classical Jewish categories of God, Torah, and Israel (meaning the Jewish people).” Michael A. Meyer
# In our seminar, we will discuss and contextualize all the issues Michael A. Meyer has raised. Our topics include the legacy
of Rabbi Isaac M. Wise, ”the architect of Reform American Judaism”, and Minhag America, the 1922 CCAR resolution
declaring that "women cannot justly be denied the privilege of ordination [as rabbis]”, prayer book revisions, and today’s Social
Action policies. Further suggestions are welcome!

In this course we shall focus on the various varieties of genres present in Jewish liturgy. What difference does it make if
the genre is blessing, praise of poetry? To answer the question we shall look closer at examples of these genres. What is a
blessing? We shall look at literary features, matters of practice, and theological implications. Similar exercises in analysis and
interpretation will reveal the rich heterogeneity of liturgical practices, inside and outside the Siddur.
Voraussetzung
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
The course will be taught in English. Primary texts will be available in Hebrew and English. This course is partially based on
lectures and therefore (virtual) attendance and note taking is crucial. We will read primary sources (the Siddur) as well as
secondary, scholarly texts. The text of the Siddur in Hebrew and English will be made available digitally. This feature will also
ensure that we are on the same page, literally speaking (at least!). Students are expected to participate in class discussions
based on the reading assignments. There will be some brief writing exercises and presentations. A five page final essay is to
be submitted at the end of the course.

LEARNING GOALS
The course draws attention to the rich variety of literary forms present in the siddur and in Jewish liturgy beyond the siddur.
Different forms exemplify different modes of understanding the act of prayer. Attention to these dimensions may reveal
theologies of prayer that range from philosophical to theurgic. The seemingly simple and common word ‘prayer’ opens up to a
multiplicity of discourses, practices, and theologies.

Starting with a discussion about the origin of the term "rabbi", the course follows the evolution (terminology, background,
context) of the rabbinate. It examines the different roles that were projected onto the rabbinate and how the demands for
rabbis have changed over the centuries, shedding a light on varying rabbinic functions in different times and places. It
juxtaposes these projections with the images that the rabbis themselves developed for the profession.
The course further asks what did the practical training look like? We will devote ourselves to the history of various rabbinical
seminaries and consider the curricula of some of these institutions.
The goal is to enable learners to develop interpretations, dispositions and connections to the idea of the rabbinate and to walk
away with a personalized perspective for their own future rabbinate.

That Jesus was a Jew of the first century is now a widely accepted insight, by both Jews and Christians. The issue is different
when it comes to Paul, the apostle of the nation. The perceptions of Paul are controversial and ambiguous. He is seen as
the first Christian theologian, the so-called real founder of Christendom, the one who distorted or the message of Jesus, or
brought it to its full potential, left Judaism, or even attacked it. Such images have been dominating Christian perceptions and
in many ways also Jewish views of the apostle. Nevertheless, already in the 19th century there have been views which saw
him as part of Jewish tradition, as a kind of proto-rabbinic thinker. In this seminar we will discuss examplary texts of Jewish
scholars who have written about Paul, from the 19th century until today in their respective contexts and the implications of
these perceptions for Jewish-Christian relations.

Die folgenden Begriffserklärungen zu Prüfungsleistung, Prüfungsnebenleistung und Studienleistung gelten im Bezug auf
Lehrveranstaltungen für alle Ordnungen, die seit dem WiSe 2013/14 in Kranft getreten sind.
Prüfungsleistung Prüfungsleistungen sind benotete Leistungen innerhalb eines Moduls. Aus der Benotung
der Prüfungsleistung(en) bildet sich die Modulnote, die in die Gesamtnote des Studiengangs
eingeht. Handelt es sich um eine unbenotete Prüfungsleistung, so muss dieses ausdrücklich
(„unbenotet“) in der Modulbeschreibung der fachspezifischen Ordnung geregelt sein. Weitere
Informationen, auch zu den Anmeldemöglichkeiten von Prüfungsleistungen, finden Sie unter
anderem in der Kommentierung der BaMa-O
Prüfungsnebenleistung Prüfungsnebenleistungen sind für den Abschluss eines Moduls relevante Leistungen, die
– soweit sie vorgesehen sind – in der Modulbeschreibung der fachspezifischen Ordnung
beschrieben sind. Prüfungsnebenleistungen sind immer unbenotet und werden lediglich
mit "bestanden" bzw. "nicht bestanden" bewertet. Die Modulbeschreibung regelt, ob
die Prüfungsnebenleistung eine Teilnahmevoraussetzung für eine Modulprüfung oder
eine Abschlussvoraussetzung für ein ganzes Modul ist. Als Teilnahmevoraussetzung
für eine Modulprüfung muss die Prüfungsnebenleistung erfolgreich vor der Anmeldung
bzw. Teilnahme an der Modulprüfung erbracht worden sein. Auch für Erbringung einer
Prüfungsnebenleistungen wird eine Anmeldung vorausgesetzt. Diese fällt immer mit
der Belegung der Lehrveranstaltung zusammen, da Prüfungsnebenleistung im Rahmen
einer Lehrveranstaltungen absolviert werden. Sieht also Ihre fachspezifische Ordnung
Prüfungsnebenleistungen bei Lehrveranstaltungen vor, sind diese Lehrveranstaltungen
zwingend zu belegen, um die Prüfungsnebenleistung absolvieren zu können.
Studienleistung Als Studienleistung werden Leistungen bezeichnet, die weder Prüfungsleistungen noch
Prüfungsnebenleistungen sind.
