Abstract
In this study, I investigated how student publications portrayed whiteness as the dominant feature of the
campus environment between 1945 and 1965 among the member institutions of a consortium of elite U.S.
Midwestern liberal arts colleges located in rural and industrial towns across Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and west-
ern Pennsylvania. These colleges’ yearbooks and student newspapers informed this analysis of whiteness as
property. Through these findings, I demonstrate the ways in which White student publications recorded white-
ness as property, entitling White students to the use and enjoyment of their college years. The invisibility of
Black students’ structural exclusion rendered whiteness unmarked and offers a new model for understanding
and analyzing desegregation and integration in historically White institutions
Abstract
Black men, underrepresented in engineering, constitute a missing segment of the population who could
contribute to the global knowledge economy. To address this national concern, stakeholders need additional
research on strategies that aid in Black men’s persistence. This study explores the experiences of 30 Black men
in engineering graduate programs. Three factors are identified as helping them persist from year to year, and in
many cases through completion of the doctorate: the role of family, spirituality and faith-based community,
and undergraduate mentors. The article concludes with implications for future research and professional prac-
tice that may improve the experiences of Black men in engineering graduate programs, which may also in-
crease the chances that they will remain in the engineering workforce.
Abstract
Through sustained ethnographic field work that inquired into youth participatory action researchers’
political identity development, I identified a politicized discourse engaged by youth during their early stages of
action research that I have termed Black resilience neoliberalism (BRN). This study explicates BRN theory, trac-
ing its connection to policy discourses related to Black youth and schools and exploring the ways its tenets are
revealed in Black youth action researchers’ reflections on race/racism, inequality, and social change. I argue
that BRN is both a conspicuous and an inconspicuous thread of neoliberal discourse and logic, which hides in
plain sight as empowerment; however, it is entangled with the project of hegemony. To that end, destabilizing
the legitimization of BRN is crucial to reconstituting empowerment
Abstract
This study uses critical discourse analysis to explain how legislators determine the role and contributions
of academic researchers in Congressional legislative hearings. The discursive practices that legislators use serve
to construct the social identity of academic witnesses, characterize witnesses’ qualifications, solicit information
from witnesses, frame comments from witnesses, and amplify and mitigate witness testimony. The findings
make visible the ways that legislators use the power of their positions to depict academic witnesses as both
experts who offer independent knowledge and experts who validate or confirm a legislator’s preferences and
priorities. The results have implications for academics who seek to improve connections between research and
policy, and academics who seek to further advance the production of knowledge of federal policymaking pro-
cesses.
Abstract
Social capital research has demonstrated the value of relationships and networks to enhance college
opportunity for first-generation students. While most work has focused on individual students and their ties,
high schools play a critical role in social capital processes by connecting students to external college access
organizations and resources. This case study employs Mario Small’s organizational brokerage theory to investi-
gate social capital formation among college-bound first-generation youth in an urban high school. Specifically,
we explore how the school itself brokered college-going resources through its partner organizations. Findings
illustrate a range of passive and active brokerage strategies that influenced the quantity and quality of available
resources, and in turn, the amount of student agency required to secure social capital gains.
Abstract
Critical race theory (CRT) has been used in educational literature to emphasize the influence of racism on
educational opportunity and the assets of students of color. Quantitative methods appear antithetical to CRT
tenets according to some, but this article endeavors to show why this is not the case, based on both historical
and contemporary notions. To build this argument, the author presents results from an empirical study that
used data from a survey of undergraduates and measurement theory to quantify students’ community cultural
wealth, a CRT framework that describes the cultural assets of communities of color. The author concludes with
recommendations for incorporating quantitative methods into future CRT studies.
Abstract
Most prior research measures teacher turnover as an annual event, but teachers actually leave their
positions throughout the school year. We use data from North Carolina to measure teacher turnover monthly
throughout the entire year and conduct an analysis of their persistence to examine the differences in early
career teacher turnover. Annually, 6% of early career teachers turn over during the school year. Teachers

Abstract
Abstract
Abstract
Abstract
Abstract
Abstract
Abstract
aufgezeigt.
Abstract
Abstract
Abstract
In 22 vergleichbaren Durchgängen
NEO-FFI.
Abstract
mensionalen Perfektionismus Kognitions-Inventars (MPCI-G [G = German]).
nitionen: Personal Standards (PSK), Concern over Mistakes (CMK) und Pursuit of Perfection Kognitionen (PPK).

Abstract

Der Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA)
Abstract
Purpose: We used gatekeeping theory to frame our examination of whether and when educators with
superintendent certification become superintendents, and how their likelihood of making that transition is
influenced by race, sex, and other characteristics. Furthermore, we sought to identify variation in career path-
ways to the superintendency. Data and Method: We analyzed 26,071 observations of 4,813 unique individuals,
representing the entire population of Texas public school educators who obtained their first superintendent
certificate between the 2000-2001 and 2014-2015 school years. We constructed alluvial diagrams to visualize
these educators’ career pathways. In addition to compiling a life table and visual displays of hazard, we used a
discrete-time hazard model to control for individual and contextual characteristics associated with transitions
into the superintendency. Findings: Educators are most likely to enter the superintendency in the academic
year immediately following that in which they obtained the requisite certification. Furthermore, pathways to
the superintendency differ greatly based on educator sex and race, as well as the level and locale employment
setting. Finally, we determined that age, experience, education, level of employment, and sex all have statisti-
cally significant impacts on the likelihood of becoming a superintendent. Implications for Research and Practice:
We discuss the role that researchers must play in coordinating with practitioners to ensure more equitable
opportunity for aspiring superintendents. We also emphasize the important role that preparation programs
play in preparing candidates for the job market. Finally, we ponder further expansions of similar presuperin-
tendency research, as well as more robust applications of alluvial diagrams.
Abstract
Purpose: This study examined an urban district’s capacity to diffuse instructional innovations. Social net-
work analysis (SNA) was used to examine the relationship between “informal” teacher support networks and
“formal” teacher support networks engineered by administrators through required membership on a team.
This study also sought to uncover how school leaders considered study findings in light of their district’s theory
of change to improve teacher collaboration. Method: About 1,100 employees responded to a sociometric sur-
vey that queried for demographics, team membership, and advice-seeking behavior. SNA methods were used
to examine network cohesion (i.e., size, density, isolates, ties) and degree centrality. Statistical analyses (chi-
square and multinomial logistic regressions) were performed to examine how team membership were associ-
ated with teachers’ advice-seeking behaviors. Visual inspection of sociograms was used to communicate and25 Zeitschrifteninhaltsdienst Februar 2019
make meaning of findings with district personnel. Findings: The majority of teachers’ informal instructional
support ties were concomitant with shared membership on an administrator created formal team. The majori-
ty of teachers who reported that at least one colleague had a strong, positive influence on their practice, also
participated in at least one formal team, and believed their team’s collaboration positively affected their in-
structional practice. Implications: School leaders affect quality of instructional support networks through or-
ganizational design. The extent to which teachers are able to access social capital and instructional support is
influenced by the choices administrators make about how to structure teacher collaboration.
Abstract
Purpose: Concerns about variation in the quality of preservice preparation provided by many university-
based principal preparation programs (PPPs) has led to calls to use outcomes of program graduates to hold
PPPs accountable. Little research, however, has assessed the degree to which different outcomes for PPP grad-
uates in fact vary systematically by program. Research Methods: Using administrative data from Tennessee, we
link approximately a decade’s worth of PPP graduates to their schools, licensure examination scores, and mul-
tiple measures of job performance in their first 3 years as principals, including supervisors’ practice ratings on
the state evaluation system, teacher and assistant principal ratings of school leadership on a statewide survey,
and measures of student achievement growth. We use which PPP a principal completed to predict these out-
comes using a regression approach with different sets of covariates. Findings: Although we are able to associ-
ate PPPs with high and low principal performance, we find that programs’ rankings vary by outcome measure,
and we are unable to identify PPPs that perform consistently well or poorly across outcomes. Moreover, we
find that Tennessee PPPs vary substantially in the characteristics of the schools into which their principals are
hired and that taking these characteristics into account is important in ordering PPPs based on outcomes. In
addition, even over a fairly long time frame, some programs produce too few graduates who later become
school leaders to allow for reliable estimates. Implications: Although the use of graduates’ outcomes to differ-
entiate PPPs holds promise, the methodological challenges to drawing valid and reliable conclusions about
PPPs from graduates’ job outcomes are substantial. Policymakers and researchers may arrive at very different
assessments of which PPPs are successful depending on which outcomes are chosen and what modeling ap-
proaches are employed.
Abstract
Purpose: School district superintendents say politics is the number one factor limiting their performance,
yet research provides limited guidance on navigating the political dynamics of district improvement. State
takeovers and district-wide turnaround efforts tend to involve particularly heated and polarized debates. Mas-
sachusetts’ 2012 takeover of the Lawrence Public Schools provides a rare case of state takeover and district
turnaround that both resulted in substantial early academic improvements and generated limited controversy.
Method: To describe the stakeholder response and learn why the reforms were not more contentious, I ana-
lyzed press coverage of the Lawrence schools from 2007 to 2015, public documents, and two secondary
sources of survey data on parent and educator perceptions of the schools. I also interviewed turnaround and
stakeholder group leaders at the state and district level regarding the first 3 years of reform. Findings: I find
that the local Lawrence context and broader statewide accountability system help explain the stakeholder
response. Furthermore, several features of the turnaround leaders’ approach improved the response and re-
flected a “third way” orientation to transcending polarizing political disagreement between educational re-
formers and traditionalists. Examples include leaders’ focus on differentiating district–school relations, diversi-
fying school management, making strategic staffing decisions, boosting both academics and enrichment, and
producing early results while minimizing disruption. Implications: The findings provide guidance for state-level
leaders on developing accountability systems and selecting contexts that are ripe for reform. The results also
provide lessons for district- and school-level leaders seeking to implement politically viable improvement of
persistently low-performing educational systems.
Abstract
Purpose: We apply diffusion of innovations theory to examine two key research questions designed to
inform efforts to improve the research–practice gap in education: (1) Are there distinct types of educators that
differ in their prioritization of the compatibility, observability, complexity, relative advantage, and trialability of
research? and (2) Are educators’ roles or context associated with their categorization in this typology? Re-
search Method: Using semistructured interview data in two Michigan counties from intermediate school dis-
trict staff (N = 24), district central office staff (N = 18), principals (N = 22), and school building staff (N = 23), we
first used directed content analysis to code for mentions of compatibility, observability, complexity, relative
advantage, and trialability. Next, using the coded data, we conducted a hierarchical agglomerative cluster anal-
ysis and follow-up cross-tabulations to assess whether cluster memberships were associated with educators’
roles or county context. Findings: Educators in our sample could be categorized in one of five clusters distin-
guished primarily by different patterns of prioritization of the compatibility, observability, and complexity of
research. Membership in these clusters did not vary by role but did vary by county, suggesting the importance
of context for educators’ perceptions of research. Implications for Research and Practice: These findings sug-Sie können auch lesen
