German-speaking immigrant settlements were quite common in Kansas beginning
with the earliest settlements in the 1850s. Large numbers of such German-speaking
immigrants continued to arrive into the early 20th century. And are continuing to come
at the beginning of the 21st century.

       Mennonite Plautdietsch
In the 21st century we can still find speakers of several varieties of
Russian German in Kansas. In most cases they represent the final
generation of speakers and are typically elderly.

Many of these Kansas Russian Germans – Volga Germans in Ellis
County, Germans from Volhynia (Swiss Mennonites) in McPherson
County– refer to their native tongue as Deitsch.

Among the Black Sea Germans near St. Francis in Cheyenne County
we may hear the dialect referred to as Düütsch or Dietsch.

Finally, the descendants of many 19th-century Mennonite immigrants
to Kansas and recent immigrant families in southwestern Kansas
from Chihuahua, Mexico, refer to their language as Plautdietsch or
Dietsch.

Despite being collectively referred to as Russian Germans, they
display a remarkable linguistic variety on the Great Plains of Kansas.

                                                 or
                                            Henry Ford?

Rather than anti-German sentiment, social mobility has led to the decline and
loss of the many rural Russian German dialects in Kansas.
