Break German To Go. You might be wondering what
Coffee Break German To Go is all about. Well, we will

In each episode we are going to ask lots of people
one question. And today we are going to start with
quite an easy question. Die heutige Frage lautet: Wie

Notes
In each interview, we hear the speakers answering the question Wie geht’s? In most
cases each speaker uses the construction mir geht’s…, meaning “I feel…”, or literally “to
me it goes…”. Note that the word mir does not mean “I”. That’s the part of the expression
which means “to me”.
In some responses we hear mir geht’s… In other answers, we hear mir geht es…. The
first form is just an abbreviation of the second form. The e- of es is dropped and an
apostrophe is put in its place.
Coffee Break German To Go - Season 1, Episode 1: Notes page 3 of 5In the answers where there are 2 people and the second person says they also feel fine “auch” is added in their reply. (Answers 3 and 4). If some someone says they feel “quite good” they say mir geht’s ganz gut as in answer 7. There can also be a change in word order. Mir geht’s gut is most commonly heard. However, we also heard uns geht es gut, ja. This means “we are fine, yes”. Uns is the plural form of the pronoun, when describing how more than one person is feeling. The ja is added for emphasis. This is seen in answers 6 and 7. In answer 9 we see the abbreviated form of the question that can be used by the person who has just been asked the same question: und dir? “And you?” In answers 7 and 10 there is a negative response to the question, using nicht to indicate that they do not feel well: Heute geht es mir leider nicht so gut. This means “today I am unfortunately not so well.” Leider has also been added, meaning “unfortunately”, to give extra information about how they feel. She then explains that she has the cold: … (ich) bin etwas erkältet. In answer 7, the person adds by way of explanation, war schon mal besser, meaning “I have been better”. Answers 8, 12 and 13 go beyond the polite “I’m fine thank you” to say they feel really great. In the last answer they give the reason as to why they feel so good: weil wir sind in Berlin und Berlin ist die Stadt der Welt! This means “…because we are in Berlin and Berlin is the (best) city in the world!” Note that in correct written German the word order would be different here: uns geht’s heute supergeil, weil in Berlin sind, und Berlin die Stadt der Welt ist!
