200 stuffed white rats: this is the striking reaction of artist Deborah Sengl to Karl
Kraus's seminal play, 'The Last Days of Mankind'. In the presence of Deborah Sengl, the
curator Günther Oberhollenzer will introduce her artwork while the young trombonist
Christian Masser will give a musical introduction.
Mit 200 präparierten weißen Ratten reagiert die Künstlerin Deborah Sengl auf Karl Kraus’
bahnbrechendes Stück “Die letzten Tage der Menschheit”. Der Kurator Günther Ober-

Anya Schiffrin's work in journalism took her to Turkey, Spain and Vietnam, among
many other countries. Now, she is a renowned lecturer and researcher on investigative
journalism, media and development. In her lecture, she speaks on the role of journalism
around the world in times of increasing online disinformation and fake news and about
the need for high quality and well-researched journalism.
Anya Schiffrin war als Journalistin unter anderem in der Türkei, Spanien und Vietnam
tätig. Heute ist sie eine renommierte Vortragende und Forscherin auf den Gebieten

ENGLISH LANGUAGE
This seminar will address and analyse the European Union’s relations with its eastern
and southern neighbours and discuss EU-neighbourhood dynamics since 2003/4. Taking
into account that the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) – providing the framework
in which relations take place – is considered to be the EU’s most important foreign policy
approach, the seminar will be embedded in the EU Global Strategy’s (EUGS) objective to
building societal and state resilience in the EU neighbourhood. Besides this focus on
resilience, both the ENP and the EUGS emphasise flexibility, differentiated bilateralism,
local ownership, comprehensiveness and principled pragmatism. The seminar offers a
space that takes issue with these objectives and examines and discusses the extent to
which they underpin and affect the practical implementation of the ENP and its over-
arching goal of creating an area of peace, prosperity and stability in Eastern Europe, the
South Caucasus, the Maghreb and the Mashreq. With a view to contextualise the evolution
of the focus on resilience in EU foreign policy, the seminar will also provide participants
with a critical overview of the origins, structure and objectives of the three editions of
the ENP (2003/4; 2011; 2015) and its sub-regional components, i.e. the Eastern Partnership
(EaP) and the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM). This is complemented by an analysis
of some concrete empirical cases from the EU’s eastern and southern neighbourhood that
will be linked with contemporary debates on the EU ‘s alleged normative power, its role
as a (potential or self-proclaimed) conflict resolution actor, and the politics of Association
Agreements.

Societies in the 21st century are changing at breath-taking speed. Digital technologies are
performing an increasing number of tasks in the economy, in politics, and in the private
sphere. Data is everywhere and has become the lifeblood of our digitised world. Therefore,
IT security is of paramount importance. The effort to make our IT infrastructures secure and
resilient enough to resist outside attacks, and the desire of states to keep their areas of
influence 'secure' and 'safe', have lead to the desire to read and analyse traffic and data
wherever it can be tracked. Tensions abound between the demands of security, safety,
privacy, liberty and technical feasibility. At the same time, digitalisation holds huge potential
for the pursuit of autonomy, freedom and a more sustainable society, making new solutions
for old problems possible. Old-fashioned approaches to public safety and security appear to
be outdated and no longer convincing. This seminar will explore the diverging requirements
of security, privacy, freedom and control, discussing the resilience of core societal values and
mechanisms against digital disruption as well as potentials and scenarios for a more sustain-
able society. Input will come from different perspectives, including computer science, law,
philosophy and the social sciences and further disciplines and points of view.
Weltweit verändern sich die Gesellschaften im 21. Jahrhundert mit atemberaubender
Geschwindigkeit. Digitale Technologien übernehmen immer mehr Aufgaben in Wirtschaft,
Politik und Privatleben und sind strategische Ressourcen. IT-Sicherheit ist deshalb von
größter Wichtigkeit. Das Streben, unsere IT-Infrastrukturen so sicher und resilient zu
gestalten, dass sie Angriffen von außen standhalten können, und der Wunsch von Staaten,
ihre Einflussbereiche sowohl vor unerlaubten Zugriffen zu schützen als auch möglichst
fehlerfrei zu halten, lösen allerorten den Wunsch aus, Daten und Traffic lesen und
analysieren zu können. Spannungen zwischen den Erfordernissen von Security, Safety,
Datenschutz, Freiheitsrechten und technischer Machbarkeit sind die Folge. Auf der
anderen Seite bringt die Digitalisierung ein riesiges Potenzial für Autonomie, Freiheit und
eine nachhaltigere Gesellschaft mit sich, indem sie neue Lösungen für alte Probleme greif-
bar macht. Althergebrachte Herangehensweisen an die öffentliche Sicherheit etwa erschei-
nen veraltet und nicht mehr überzeugend. Wir beleuchten im Seminar die unterschiedli-
chen Anforderungen von Sicherheit, Datenschutz, Freiheit und Kontrolle und thematisiert
die Resilienz von gesellschaftlichen Grundwerten und -mechanismen angesichts des digita-
len Umsturzes ebenso wie Potenziale und Szenarien für eine nachhaltigere Gesellschaft.

We will examine how gender roles are created and change over time, and how they
affect society, the workplace, and the conditions of women. Using examples from
developed and developing countries, and with perspectives from political economy
and social psychology, we will look at how gender stereotypes are determined, and
analyse their social and economic impacts. We will consider various typologies of sex-
ism and their relation to gender inequality in order to examine how women’s work is
recognised, assessed and rewarded, as well as to understand violence against women.
Finally, we will investigate the intersection of sexism with other forms of social
discrimination.
Das Seminar untersucht die Konstruktion von Geschlechterrollen und wie sie die Gesell-
schaft, Arbeitswelt und die Lebensbedingungen von Frauen prägen. Anhand von Beispielen
aus Industriestaaten und Entwicklungsländern und mithilfe von Ansätzen aus der Volks-
wirtschaftslehre und der Sozialpsychologie werden wir beleuchten, wie Gender-Stereotypen
festgelegt werden, und deren soziale und ökonomische Auswirkungen analysieren. Unter-
schiedliche Ausprägungen von Sexismus ebenso wie deren Zusammenhang mit Geschlecht-
erungleichheit werden betrachtet, um zu untersuchen, wie die Arbeit von Frauen aner-
kannt, bewertet und belohnt wird, und um Gewalt gegen Frauen zu verstehen.
Schließlich werden die Schnittmengen zwischen Sexismus und anderen Formen sozialer
Diskriminierung ermitteln.

From ‘known knowns’ to ‘known unknowns’ and ‘unknown unknowns’: We will start
the seminar with what is known about climate change but quickly move well beyond
toward what we know we don’t know, and to some of the more vexing questions. That is
also where policy – and politics – enters. Much like the basic science, the fundamental
"solution" has been known for over a century. That doesn’t mean it’s easy to tackle. In
fact, climate change may well be the "perfect" public policy problem. In our quest to find
some answers, we will venture well beyond classroom discussions to measure aerosols
on the Wiedersbergerhorn and stage a debate about the science and some of the
solutions.

beginnen das Seminar mit den bekannten Gegebenheiten des Klimawandels, werden aber rasch in

seit über einem Jahrhundert bekannt. Dies heißt jedoch nicht, dass das Klimaproblem einfach zu
bewältigen wäre. Im Gegensatz, der Klimawandel kommt einem “perfekten” Problem nahe. Auf der
Suche nach Antworten gehen wir weit über die Diskussionen im Klassenzimmer hinaus, messen

This seminar examines how resilience relates to development policy. The concept of
resilience offers explanations for the failure to actually deliver development in many contexts
around the world; it shifts the focus towards impact and requires engagement with the
concrete realities on the ground. Special emphasis will be given to fragile and conflict-
affected states. New trends in international crisis and conflict management will be examined,
and the rise and fall of human security will be interrogated. Against the backdrop of
momentous changes in geostrategic relations and global governance, the seminar will reflect
on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement, the need for infrastructure,
and the special challenges and opportunities of the African continent.
Das Seminar geht den Zusammenhängen zwischen Resilienz und Entwicklungspolitik nach.
Das Resilienz-Konzept bietet Erklärungen dafür, warum es weltweit in vielen Bereichen nicht
gelingt, Entwicklung anzukurbeln; Resilienz richtet das Augenmerk auf die erzielte Wirkung von
gesetzten Maßnahmen und erfordert das Eingehen auf die konkreten Vor-Ort-Gegebenheiten.
Das Seminar legt besonderes Augenmerk auf sogenannte fragile und von Konflikten betroffene
Staaten. Es beleuchtet neue Trends hinsichtlich des Managements von internationalen Krisen
und Konflikten und thematisiert den Aufstieg und Fall des Konzeptes der menschlichen Sicher-
heit. Vor dem Hintergrund tiefgreifender Veränderungen in den geostrategischen Beziehungen
und der globalen Governance wird das Seminar u.a. über die UN-Nachhaltigkeitsziele, das
Pariser Klima-Abkommen, den globalen Infrastrukturbedarf und die Herausforderungen und
Möglichkeiten des afrikanischen Kontinents reflektieren.

Precision Medicine is a concept for prevention and treatment that takes into account
individual variability in genetic predispositions, environmental influences, and
lifestyles. It gives rise to more accurate prevention and treatment strategies for
particular diseases, instead of the traditional one-size-fits-all therapy regimes. The
seminar will examine the impact of individualized medicine on our resilience as
humans in a world where so-called ‘diseases of civilization’ are mounting. It will also
discuss the critical social challenges of delivering universal access to precision
medicine.
Präzisionsmedizin ist ein Präventions- und Behandlungskonzept, das die individuelle

On the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights this year, the
seminar will elucidate whether or not human rights represent a potential hermeneuti-
cal key to digital transformation and the application of artificial intelligence.

Gesellschaft wohl früher mitbestimmen als bisher angenommen. Algorithmen, die für oder

Examining several European member states and especially Greece, this seminar will shed
light on the political, economic and social repercussions of the Eurozone crisis and
subsequent programs of domestic austerity. What impact did such an approach have on
Greek society? What measures can be taken nationally and internationally in order to
strengthen Greece, and thereby Europe? How have other member states been affected?
The role of the former so-called "Troika" will also be assessed in this seminar and which
policies, contracts and procedures like the "European Semester" or the "Fiscal Compact"
were installed by the supranational level. Finally, future scenarios and different
standpoints will be considered to discuss prospects for political and social cohesion
within the EU.

Microbes are essential for the health of all ecosystems, plants, animals, and humans, but until re-
cently most of these tiny organisms could neither be identified nor characterized. The biodiversity
of microbes by far exceeds those of all other organisms on Earth and there are as many microbial
than human cells in a human body. For the first time in history, molecular tools enable research-
ers to investigate the structure and function of entire microbial communities in their habitats (the
microbiome). These game-changing technological developments revealed the
crucial role microbiomes plays for human health and disease, for the protection of our
environment and for economy. This seminar will provide an easy-to-understand introduction into
microbiomes. We will observe microbes microscopically and will provide an overview on the
human microbiome and its relations to diet, life style, and many different kinds of disease ranging
from inflammatory bowel diseases, to cancer, and psychological disorders. We will also address
the emerging antibiotic resistance of pathogenic microbes – considered as one of the most danger-
ous health threats for humans – and will discuss how each person can contribute to fight this
problem. Finally, highly debated technologies, which do transform science currently, as genetic
modification using CRISPR-Cas or synthetic biology, will be introduced and jointly discussed.
Mikroben sind von enormer Bedeutung für das Funktionieren aller Ökosysteme und die Gesundheit
von Pflanzen, Tieren und dem Menschen. Obwohl die mikrobielle Biodiversität wesentlich höher ist,
als die aller anderen Lebewesen auf der Erde, konnten bis vor kurzem die meisten dieser winzigen
Organismen weder identifiziert noch genauer untersucht werden. Zum ersten Mal in der Geschichte
erlauben es nun molekulare Methoden die Zusammensetzung und Funktion ganzer mikrobieller
Lebensgemeinschaften in Umwelt und Medizin (das Mikrobiom) zu untersuchen. Diese wegwei-
senden methodischen Entwicklungen haben es ermöglicht die entscheidende Rolle der Mikrobiome
für die Gesundheit des Menschen, für den Schutz der Umwelt und für die Wirtschaft aufzuzeigen.
Dieses Seminar wird einen Überblick über die aktuelle Mikrobiomforschung geben. Wir werden
Mikro-organismen unter dem Mikroskop beobachten um zu verstehen, wie unser Mikrobiom durch
Ernährung und Lebensstil beeinflusst werden kann und welchen Einfluss es auf eine Vielzahl von
Krankheiten hat. Ebenfalls werden wir die enorme Bedrohung der Gesundheit durch die sich rasant
verbreitenden Antibiotikaresistenzen von bakteriellen Krankheitserregern thematisieren und
gemeinsam Ratschläge erarbeiten, wie Einzelpersonen tätig werden können, um dieses Problem zu
bekämpfen. Schließlich werden im Seminar aktuelle, mit der Mikrobiologie in engem Zusammen-
hang stehende und kontrovers diskutierte Technologien, wie Genome Editing durch CRISPR-Cas
oder das Erzeugen von biologische Systemen, vorgestellt und gemeinsam diskutiert.

What does resilience mean, and how could an integration of diverse perspectives be
helpful when facing modern security threats? Strategic autonomy is defined as a central
goal in 2016’s EU Global Strategy (EU-GS), and many efforts and decisions were made in
2017 to foster European Defence Research, Defence Capabilities, and Defence
Cooperation amongst member states. Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) is
seen as a key to promoting and strengthening cooperation and effectiveness. NATO is
still the key security actor regarding 'old fashioned' territorial defence? And, bearing in
mind the current shift in US security policy, is NATO still the player it was during the
Cold War?
Was bedeutet Resilienz, und inwieweit könnte es hilfreich sein, diverse Perspektiven zu
bündeln, um modernen Sicherheitsrisiken zu begegnen? Die “Globale Strategie für die
Außen- und Sicherheitspolitik der EU” von 2016 (EU-GS) definiert strategische Autonomie

There are two terms that have come to define the 21st century: the 'urban age' and the
'age of man'. The former reflects the fact that more than half of the world’s population
live in cities. The latter indicates the cost of this urbanisation and the impact of human
activities on the creation of a new geological epoch, now known as the Anthropocene.
Many cities around the world are acknowledging this and are competing with one
another to become not only the cleanest, greenest and healthiest city, but also the
safest. In this context, resilience is a concept which is spreading fast. We will discuss
the assumptions inherent in the ideologies and rationalities of ‘resilience’, its inscribed
meanings and values, social, political, moral and ethical implications. What pitfalls and
opportunities can be found in different understandings of the resilience paradigm?
Participants will be asked to select a city from the 100 Resilient Cities and use that as a
case study throughout the seminar.
Es gibt zwei Begriffe, die für das 21. Jahrhundert prägend geworden sind: das “urbane
Zeitalter” und das “Zeitalter des Menschen”. Ersteres spiegelt die Tatsache wider, dass mehr
als die Hälfte der Weltbevölkerung in Städten lebt. Letzteres stellt auf den Preis der
Urbanisierung ab und auf die Entstehung einer neuen geologischen Epoche, des
Anthropozän, als Folge menschlichen Handelns. Weltweit tragen viele Städte diesem
Umstand Rechnung und wetteifern darum, nicht nur die sauberste, grünste und gesündeste,
sondern auch die sicherste Stadt zu werden. In diesem Zusammenhang findet das Konzept
der Resilienz immer mehr Anhänger. Wir werden Grundannahmen hinter dem Konzept
der Resilienz ebenso behandeln wie Ideologien und Denkansätze, die darauf aufbauen, und
Bedeutungen und Werte, die darin eingeschrieben werden. Ebenso werden die
soziopolitischen und moralisch-ethischen Implikationen unterschiedlicher Interpretationen
und Umsetzungen von Resilienz thematisiert. Welche Fallstricke und welche Chancen sind
in unterschiedlichen Auffassungen von Resilienz eingebettet und angelegt? Die
TeilnehmerInnen werden jede/r eine der 100 Resilient Cities auswählen und während des
gesamten Seminars als Fallbeispiel verwenden.

The seminar will explore that most fundamental of our public spheres, the
education system. Applying the concept of design thinking, the participants are sent on
an imaginary ‘Mission to Mars’. The main goal is to break free of existing educational
structures and prototype a new system of learning. The seminar is for change-agents
and those who recognise the centrality of education in any discussion about building a
better world. Over the course of six days we will reflect on the purpose of education and
design our own school, one where the curriculum, pedagogy, environment, staffing and
organisation support our vision for what education should be. The design process will
build empathy, and challenge us to bring actionable insights and a collective vision for
all to take home.
Das Seminar erforscht jenen fundamentalsten unserer öffentlichen Räume, das Bildungssystem.
Unter Anwendung des “Design Thinking”-Konzepts werden die TeilnehmerInnen des Seminars auf
eine imaginäre “Mission zum Mars” geschickt. Das wichtigste Ziel ist es, sich von existierenden
Bildungsstrukturen zu befreien und einen Prototyp für ein neues System des Lernens zu
entwickeln. Das Seminar richtet sich an Change-Agents und an jene, die den zentralen Stellenwert

the reorientation of the economy toward the pursuit of the common good, especially as
defined by the contours of the Sustainable Development Goals.

A microbiome is a community of microorganisms (such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses)
that inhabit a particular multicellular organism, and, of course, the human microbiome
is of special interest. Microbiomes are as indispensable for the normal functioning of
our ecosystems as they are for the human body, and disruptions in either are associated
with a loss in diversity of microorganisms. This seminar will examine if the human
body can ‘control’ its own diversity. How is necessary microbial diversity established
and maintained in the body? How is it affected by a hospital visit, and how can we
control microorganisms in hospitals to reduce infection risks without causing
resistance? After introducing the participants to the field of microbiomes, the seminar
will explore the question of how we might create a human space mission to Mars with-
out contaminating that planet. Further, the seminar will ask how we can control our
own microbiome during a space flight.
Ein Mikrobiom ist die Gesamtheit an Mikroorganismen (wie Bakterien, Pilze und Viren), die einen
bestimmten mehrzelligen Organismus besiedeln. Das menschliche Mikrobiom, also die Summe der
Mikroorganismen, die überall in und auf dem menschlichen Körper leben, ist von besonderem Inte-
resse. Mikrobiome sind für die Funktionsweise unserer Ökosysteme genauso unverzichtbar wie für
den menschlichen Körper, und in beiden Fällen gehen Störungen mit einem Verlust an mikrobieller
Diversität einher. Dieses Seminar untersucht, ob der menschliche Körper seine eigene Diversität
‘kontrollieren’ kann. Wie entsteht die nötige mikrobielle Diversität, und wie bleibt sie aufrecht? Wie
wirkt sich ein Spitalsaufenthalt auf sie aus, und wie können wir Mikroorganismen in Kranken-
häusern so kontrollieren, dass wir Infektionsrisiken verringern, ohne Resistenzen hervorzurufen?
Nach einer Einführung in das Gebiet der Mikrobiome geht das Seminar der Frage nach, wie wir
eine menschliche Weltallmission zum Mars bringen könnten, ohne diesen Planeten zu

The seminar will address social and medical issues concerning reproductive rights in
a number of countries and regions. At the outset, participants will be introduced to the
concept of natural fertility as well as different social approaches to it. Seeing as a good
grasp of the historical background is necessary in order to understand current dynam-
ics and legal situations, the seminar will provide insights into the legal and social
history of contraception and abortion. The seminar will be taught by two medical
doctors whose expert knowledge will form the cornerstone of the debate.
Das Seminar wird sich mit sozialen und medizinischen Fragen der Reproduktiven Rechte
einzelner Staaten und Regionen beschäftigen. Als Grundlage gelten die natürliche Fruchtbarkeit
und die gesellschaftlichen Ansätze, mit dieser Umzugehen. Ein gründlicher Blick der historischen
Entwicklungen ist erforderlich, um heutige Zusammenhänge und aktuelle Rechtslagen zu
verstehen. Das Seminar wird von zwei Ärzten geleitet und garantiert dadurch das medizinische
Fachwissen.

Rachel Derrah, Isabel Chender and Toke Moeller will host a Dojo during the afternoon
sessions of the Seminar Week. In Japanese, Dojo means "place of the way". It is
traditionally considered to be the place for two activities: a training ground for learning
the specific techniques of an art (martial, meditation, flower arranging, music, etc.) and
an arena for individual self-realization and growth. A Dojo is about aligning personal
power and purpose with the work we want and need to be doing for the world. If you
are seeking to grow your leadership in service of others and a more sustainable world,
this workshop is an opportunity to refuel, strengthen clarity and heart, and offer more
conscious and bold actions for your community and our world. Separate registration is

Spoken word takes poetry out of the dusty cupboard and puts it in front of a live audience.
The results are surprising, energetic and unexpected. In this series of workshops, you will
write your own spoken word poem, perform your poem and create a short film of your poem
on your smartphone. We will celebrate your life, your creative journey and your experiences
of Alpbach.Spoken word poetry uses the natural language of conversation and is ideal for
those who wish to find more creative ways of using spoken English combined with
expressive non-verbal communication. Spoken word poetry is now a global phenomenon
and poems are shared via YouTube and social media with millions of people all around the
world. In this seminar, you will begin to understand the appeal and the range of this
developing art form. You will learn how to write 'from the heart' and to speak your truth
with confidence and conviction. The workshops will be run by Lucy English, Reader in
Creative Writing from Bath Spa University. Lucy is a spoken word poet and has twenty
years’ experience of writing and performing poetry. She will be assisted by three of her
students from the Master of Research in Transnational Writing, all whom are active
members of the Bristol spoken word scene, and organisers of spoken word nights.

werden Sie die Anziehungskraft und die Ausdrucksvielfalt dieser aufstrebenden Kunstform
erfahren. Sie werden lernen, wie man “vom Herzen her” schreibt und die eigene Wahrheit mit
Selbstbewusstsein und Überzeugung ausspricht.Die Seminarleiterin ist Spoken Word-Poetin
und verfügt über 20 Jahre Erfahrung im Schreiben und Vortragen von Lyrik. Drei ihrer
Studierenden werden sie unterstützen – allesamt aktive Mitglieder der Spoken Word-Szene von
Bristol und Organisatoren von Spoken Word-Abenden.
