Foreword EHF President Dear handball friends, The EHF Champions League Women 2022/23 is ready for its return from the six-week break for the Women’s EHF EURO 2022. Many stars who enlightened the European Championship in Slovenia, North Macedonia and Montenegro will shine again when Europe’s top-flight club competition resumes in the first weekend of December. No less than 54 players who competed in the medal matches at the final weekend of the EHF EURO with their national teams of Norway, Denmark, Montenegro, and France take the courts again with their club teams as the EHF Champions League group phase heads into the next part of the season. Fans will be in for a real treat when the 16 leading clubs of the continent continue their quest for the quarter-final and play-off spots, as only the six best ranked teams in both groups will advance to the knock-out stages. After the opening six rounds, the tables could hardly look any more exciting than they currently do. In the group A standings, three teams share the lead: two-time defending champions Vipers Kristiansand, last season’s EHF European League Women winners SG BBM Bietigheim, and 2016 title holders CSM Bucuresti. FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria and Odense Håndbold follow shortly behind and are eager to capitalise on any misstep from the top three. A similar picture in group B, where record champions Györi Audi ETO KC and the only unbeaten team in the first six rounds of the competition, CS Rapid Bucuresti, share the top position, closely followed by last season’s EHF FINAL4 contenders Metz Handball and Team Esbjerg. A scintillating battle between Europe’s top clubs is guaranteed as the group phase closes in on its business end and clubs are striving to continue their road into the knock-out stages and, ultimately, the EHF FINAL4 2023 in Budapest on 3/4 June 2023 at the MVM Dome in Budapest. Nachdem CSM Bucuresti in der letzten Saison vier Spiele mit einem einzigen Tor in den letzten Sekunden
verloren hatte, werden die Rumäninnen erneut versuchen, in der Saison 2022/23 um den EHF Champions
League Women-Titel zu kämpfen.
Fakten
• CSM wird zum achten Mal in Folge an der Champions League teilnehmen, hat sich aber seit 2017/18
nicht mehr für das EHF FINAL4 Women qualifiziert
• 10 Spieler haben das Team verlassen, während sechs neu hinzugekommen sind, wobei Torhüterin Laura
Glauser, Rückraumspielerin Grace Zaadi Deuna und Kreisläuferin Crina Pintea die prominentesten
Neuverpflichtungen sind
• Spielerinnen aus sieben verschiedenen Ländern vervollständigen den Kader für CSM – mit sieben
rumänischen, vier französischen Spielerinnen, drei aus Norwegen, zwei aus Montenegro und je einer aus
Russland, Slowenien und Schweden
• CSM wurde letzte Saison Zweiter in der heimischen Liga, nach dem Lokalrivalen Rapid Bucuresti, und
diese ist die erste Champions-League-Saison mit zwei Mannschaften aus der rumänischen Hauptstadt
Wichtigste Frage: Kann CSM ins EHF FINAL4 einziehen?
Seit CSM seine Debütsaison in der EHF Champions League Women mit dem Gewinn der Trophäe im Jahr
2016 markierte, waren sie jede Saison ein Titelkandidat. In der Vergangenheit haben Trainerwechsel den
Rhythmus gestört, da jede bedeutende Niederlage einen Ersatz auf der Bank nach sich zog. Das änderte
sich, als Adrian Vasile 2019 übernahm, aber da die Spieler in der Vergangenheit mit einer alarmierenden
Geschwindigkeit kamen und gingen, hatte der Kader immer noch wenig Zeit, sich zu verfestigen.
Dieses Mal hat sich CSM auf dem Sommer-Transfermarkt selbst übertroffen, wobei Grace Zaadi ein großer
Coup war. Der französische Innenverteidiger ist einer der erfahrensten Spielmacher im Wettbewerb, kann
in der Abwehr eine herausragende Rolle spielen und wird dem Angriff von CSM, der in den vergangenen
Saisons lange gelitten hat, definitiv helfen.
Im Fokus: Cristina Neagu
Neagu wurde im August 34 Jahre alt und mit ihrer langen Verletzungsgeschichte schließt sich langsam
das Fenster der Gelegenheit für sie, die EHF Champions League Women zum zweiten Mal zu gewinnen.
Nachdem Neagu mit Grace Zaadi Deuna und Kalidiatou Niakate, die sich CSM anschließen, eine ernsthafte
Verstärkung in der Abwehr erhalten hat, möchte sie zum ersten Mal seit der Saison 2017/18 wieder ins
EHF FINAL4 einziehen.
Neagu hat in den letzten fünf Spielzeiten dreimal die 100-Tore-Marke in einer einzigen Saison überschrit-
ten, ihre Zahl ist also nicht zurückgegangen, aber Verletzungen – zwei Kreuzbandrisse und eine Schulter-
verletzung in den letzten zehn Jahren .
Der rumänische Star ist eine Perfektionistin und als sie sich entschied, ihren Vertrag mit CSM um zwei wei-
tere Spielzeiten zu verlängern, hatte sie sicherlich Leistung im Sinn, zumal dies ihr Heimatverein ist. Da sie
ihre Karriere mit einem Höhepunkt beenden möchte, ist Neagu weiterhin die beste Torschützin des Teams
in der heimischen Liga und der EHF Champions League.
