Vorwort
You have to see it with your mind’s eye.
Titelfigur, die „something like you, something like a beast, something like a bird,
something like an angel“ (121 3–5) bis zum Ende rätselhaft bleibt. Das Jugendbuch
greift altersgerecht eine Vielzahl von Themen auf: growing up, coping with feelings
of jealousy, guilt and possible loss of a loved one, the significance of dreams, beliefs,
reality and the supernatural, school and education, friendship and trust.

Modul 8 Skellig – The Film
Lernziele 1 Stunde (clip approach)
Regel abschnittsweise Betrachtung) Filmfassung an.
Fragestellung
• How do you like the film version of ‘Skellig’?
• What did you notice about the mise-en-scene, the use of music, the
cinematography and the actors?
Didaktisch-methodische Anmerkungen
The mise-en-scene (French for “placing on stage”) can be described as the overall look
and feel of the film. This overall impression is created by different elements such as:
costumes, setting (furniture, landscape, buildings, lighting, etc.) and the way in which
the characters are positioned in a scene (e.g. Do they stand next to each other,
opposite each other, far away from one another, …?).
Download-Materials von KV The Language of Film: Camera Terms aufgegriffen RDJG774

Ergebnis KV 14
Film Log
Characters/Actors: Concentrate on one character only.
Michael: unhappy about the move, sceptical about the bad condition their new
house and garden is in, wanders around by himself looking around the house
and the garden, curious and scared at the same time (e.g. his reaction to the
blackbird in the attic), strongly attracted to the old garage, mostly depicted as a
rather quiet, serious-looking, well-behaved boy. At school: bullied by his sports
teacher and classmate Coot, but very close friends with Leakey. At the hospital:
very happy about his newborn sister. His Dad tells him to worry less and to open
up more: “You know your problem, Mikey, you think too much. Sometimes you
just gotta let go.”
Both parents: happy and full of enthusiasm about the new house, work hard to
renovate the house, love each other and are looking forward to having the baby,
love Michael very much and take good care of him (e.g. his Dad picks him up
after school, his Dad makes jokes to get him to smile, his Mum tries to show him
he is very important to her).
Father: likes to make jokes (e.g. when Michael asks about Ernie Myers and
where he died), tries to get Michael to talk about his thoughts and worries
Mother: very worried about the newborn but doesn’t want to show it
Leakey: Michael’s best friend, stands up for Michael, is in a difficult situation at
home because of his stepfather
Setting(s)/mise-en-scene
• Intro: boy standing on the ruins of an old tower, dares to jump, cut to next
scene outside the garage
• The old home in an apartment building (seen only from the outside)
• Motorway (symbolizing physical distance from former home)
• School, assembly, swimming pool with springboard (image (fear of heights)
from intro taken up here), shower rooms, outside of school building
• House, garden, garage in Falconer Road: scary, falling apart, dirty
• Hospital, maternity ward
• Interaction: before the family is shown in the hospital with the new baby,
Michael often stands in noteable distance from his parents
Use of sounds/film music
• Classical music with strings during the first two minutes of the film
• school song during Assembly
• natural sounds of the surroundings, e.g. animals in the garden, Michael
moving in the old attic of the house are reproduced louder than they would
be in reality
• pop songs when Michael’s mum and later Michael and his dad clean up the
house

Cinematography: Striking visual images (e.g. camera movement, camera shots,
camera angles)
• Beginning: establishing shot: sky full of birds
• Bird’s-eye-view on the van of Michael’s family on the motorway
• Low-angle shot/high-angle shot of Michael on top of the tower,
the springboard at the school swimming pool (indicating Michael’s fear
of heights)
• Several long shots of the garage seen from the house
• Several reaction shots and point of view shots depicting Michael’s
impressions of their new home and his interaction with his parents; inside
the house the camera seems to follow Michael’s partly veiled vision of the
new unknown surroundings
• Many close-ups and extreme close-ups of small animals, insects, spiderwebs
all over the house, dark rooms to create a mysterious, maybe even scary
atmosphere
• Panning of the camera when Michael enters the garage, the movement of
the garage accelerates when Michael hears the voice and takes flight
through the garden.
Differences to the book
• The book mentions “their old house” (12 11–12), not an apartment building
• Scenes at school: Sports lesson, Michael’s fear of heights, Leakey’s difficulties
with his stepfather
• The book starts after the baby is born. Part of the preceding story is told as a
backflash.
• The film tells the story in chronological order.
• Michael and his parents discuss which room will be his new room. He cannot
have the room next to the bathroom because this is going to be his sister’s
room. Michael chooses the attic (very bad condition, broken planks, full of
spiderwebs) as his new room.
• Michael has a guilty conscience because he did not stay home from school
after the move to look after his mum; he was outside in the garden and didn’t
hear her cry for help when the labour started.
