CREATIVE SAXONY-ANHALT

STIMULATING, MOTIVATING,
ADVANCING.
SAXONY-ANHALT SHOWS ITS CLASS,
ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO MAKING
THINGS ‘MOVE’.

 NO WONDER ...

… since the local field of animators is highly
prosperous. There are good reasons why more and
more creative industries are taking root in Saxony-
Anhalt, a media location of high international
 reputation. Halle (Saale)-based MotionWorks is
one of Germany’s largest animation studios.
From box office successes such as “Mullewapp” to
 TV series by ARD / ZDF / KI.KA / MDR / SRTL / Nicke-
lodeon such as ‘The Adventures of the young
Marco Polo’ (see image), we have rendered a lot
into motion and have received plenty of ‘especially
valuable’ certifications. Well above 150 features,
documentaries and animated films have been
developed and produced in our state in recent
years. Saxony-Anhalt is more than just a backdrop.
Especially Halle (Saale) has developed into a centre
for multimedia, particularly in the fields of post-
 production, sound engineering and animation.

    H
erzlich willkommen zu „Training for Trainers“ in Halle (Saale).
die in Halle ansässige International Academy of Media and Arts (IAMA).

W
elcome to the “Training for Trainers” meeting in Halle (Saale). I am very pleased
CARTOON has returned to Halle with this event for the third time after two previous
editions in 2006 and 2013. Since 1998, the city has become an internationally
renowned location for animation, one of the largest in Germany.
To a special extent, this is thanks to the effort, initiative and creativity of Tony Loeser, CEO of
MotionWorks GmbH. For many years, the Halle-based company has been successfully producing
animated films and TV series with a staff of currently 70 employees and freelancers as well as
partners in Germany and abroad.
Implementing “Training for Trainers” in Halle, CARTOON partners with the International
Academy of Media and Arts (IAMA). This non-profit organization was founded in Halle with the
focus to complement the existing college and education landscape by highly specialised and
consistently market-oriented training, particularly in the field of animation. Over the years,
IAMA’s initiatives have included several programmes of the European Animation Masterclass as
well as the Animation Talent Award, an online competition for animated shorts.
The European animation scene comes together at changing locations within the EU thanks to
the versatile CARTOON programme. The locations temporarily become the centre of the industry
with all its facets. In particular, I appreciate the support of the MDM, bringing this advanced
training course back to Halle for the third time. I hope this series of events will continue in the
years to come.
I wish you all interesting workshops and discussions as well as an eventful stay in Halle (Saale),
Saxony-Anhalt’s capital of culture and media.

                                                                                                      5

    I
Anhalt zu „Training for Trainers“ begrüßen.
in Halle.

O
n behalf of the Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (MDM) I bid you a warm welcome to
Saxony-Anhalt and to “Training for Trainers”. We are delighted that Halle will be once
again the location for this year’s meeting organized by CARTOON in cooperation with
the International Academy of Media and Arts (IAMA). For many years the city has been hosting
high-level training and qualification initiatives for the European media business, designed
for animation as well as documentary and feature film professionals. It is also home of IAMA,
an institution offering a wide range of expert events for international media professionals,
particularly in the field of animation. Moreover, Halle has become a significant media location
with numerous production companies and service providers.
Animation forms a major part of MDM’s overall funding policy. With our support and thanks
to the creative work of many professionals, a large number of successful film and media
projects could be made within the last years. Apart from well-established conditions in the
Mitteldeutschland region, we are also working together with our partners CARTOON and
IAMA to offer training programmes aimed at experienced as well as up-and-coming young
animation talents.
This current edition of “Training for Trainers” is dedicated to strengthen the network between
European animation schools and to foster the dialogue with the media industry. It is a place to
make new contacts and develop ideas, and it affords a perfect opportunity to exchange views on
the trends and challenges common to all in the European animation scene.
I wish all participants a stimulating few days of conversation and debate and an enjoyable stay
here in Halle. I hope we may welcome you back again to Mitteldeutschland in the future.

                                                                                                  7

    F
or many years now CARTOON has supported the dialogue between education and
industry through its coaching programmes at the Cartoon Movie and the Cartoon Forum
and through Training For Trainers, an initiative aimed at fostering links, alliances and joint
projects between attending teaching establishments and speakers from the professional world.
Animation is one of the greatest growing sectors in the audiovisual industry with a constant
need for versatile, skilled and internationally minded professionals able to understand the
creative and business aspects of the animation industry.
This meeting, hosted in Halle for the second year running, is therefore a great place to mix
professional presentations, academic workshops and screenings of students’ graduation works.
We wish to thank our co-funders Creative Europe of the European Commission, Sachsen-Anhalt
and Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (MDM) as well as co-organiser, the International Academy
    of Media & Arts (IAMA).
We hope you enjoy this European professional and academic gathering and are confident it will
help you consolidate your network and skills.
