In this course, we will discuss how neoliberalism has shaped (and changed) almost all aspects of modern life, exploring how
it has affected education, politics and how we work, but also people’s health and home(s). Over the course of the semester,
the following questions will guide us: How has neoliberalism changed institutions (e.g. education, home, work)? How does it
deal with (financial, climate, health) crisis? How has it shaped identity? How has it influenced literature and the arts and the
stories they tell? With a focus on the US and the UK, we will engage with a variety of different texts, from academic literature
to essays and interviews to short stories, lyrics and film. All readings will be made available via Moodle.

This course will provide a space for critical interrogation and discussion of food cultures and the politics that are associated
with them. We will tackle questions of conspicuous consumption, the coloniality of food habits as well as ideologies associated
with the human body. The foundational tenet of this seminar is that food is of particular political relevance despite attempts to
portray it as 'just culture'.

Adultery is addressed in many works of American literature. This course will explore how adulterous acts reflect and shape the
meaning of American family structures, religious beliefs and ethics, social contracts, economic changes, race and racialization,
and sexual and gender norms. Literary scenes of adultery and their consequences will be the lens through which we will

In this class we will explore the genre of autobiographic writing in the United States and its particular relation to identity
formation – both individually and nationally. Life writing and its critique underwent significant changes during the 20th and
21st century. From a marginal genre and a largely neglected field of research the autobiography evolved into the epitome
of contemporary “western” culture. We will trace this development focusing on the changing understanding of individuality
and personhood that it represents. Most importantly we will focus on the uses of this autobiographic genre and its claims to
personhood in relation to marginalized groups in their struggle for recognition. Today, the rigid categories of the genre have
been dissolved as it includes autobiographies, biographies, diaries, testimonies, and basically all forms of self narration and
representation. In this class we will therefore read traditional autobiographies as well as texts more broadly summarized as life
writing. The department seeks to return to in-presence teaching for the winter semester. However, whether this class can be

In the last couple of years, popular debates about colonialist representations in the public space – through monuments and
street names, for instance – have gained momentum, especially in connection with the toppling of monuments in various cities
around the world depicting leading colonial actors involved in the enslavement trade and in the oppression of people in the
formerly colonized countries.
In this seminar, we will critically discuss popular debates (drawing from different media outlets) and academic discourses
(based on theoretical texts) that address some of the histories, concepts, and practices of dealing with colonial legacies as
represented in and performed with monuments, architectures and street names.
We will read theoretical texts from cultural studies, postcolonial studies and memory studies, as well as sound and sensory
studies to study the social, cultural and sensory dimensions of memory and knowledge making.
The seminar will also engage with different artistic and activist interventions into colonialist representations in the urban
space, for instance through campaigns (Oxford, UK), decolonial walks (Berlin), audio guides (Potsdam) and decolonial public
sculptures (Copenhagen).
There will also be space for exploring some practice-based methods of engaging with monuments through sound walks and
field recordings.

The course will now definitely take place online. The maximum number of particpants is 30.
War Literature is one of the oldest genres of western literature. Yet especially for Anglophone war literature most of the
th
fundamental developments arguably happened in the 20 century. The First World War did not only shape modern warfare
but also had a great impact on how war was depicted in writing. For the first time many of those who wrote literature about the
th st
war were also those who fought (and sometimes fell) on the battlefields. With each new conflict in the 20 and 21 century,
the portrayal of war in media and art changed and evolved. In this course we will be analysing and discussing selected works
that emerged from past and present conflicts. Recurring themes will be: identity, relationships between combatants and non-
combatants, killing and dying, masculinity as well as the question of the impossibility to convey war.
Most of the literature will be made available on Moodle. One of the sessions will be devoted to war photography, its ethics and
role in our societies. Due to the nature of the topic please be prepared to deal with very graphic material every week.

In this course, we will investigate ways in which visual artists negotiate the tension between transparency and opacity
artistically/aesthetically in relation to the ”burden of representation.” We will explore notions of subjectivity, community, as well
as ownership of (hi)stories, bodies, material and identity in the sphere of cinema and image. Films that we will engage with
include Love is the Message, the Message is Death (2016) by Arthur Jafa, Wildness (2012) by Wu Tsang and The Atlantic
is a Sea of Bones (2017) by Tourmaline. How do these works engage with the dominant image archives of contemporary
society and surveillance culture that are embedded in a social and historical formula of affirmation and forgetting? In what
ways do their works refuse the burden of representation and visualize alternative ways of sociability, collectivity and solidarity?
Readings include academic papers, essays, poetry, film & digital media. We will meet every two weeks for an online
discussion on zoom or common.garden. Everything else will happen on moodle.

In this course students will engage with the works of canonical representatives of the Anglophone black radical tradition
who have engaged with the Berlin-Brandenburg region in their lives and writing, such as W.E.B. Du Bois, Audre Lorde and
Angela Davis. An important question guiding our discussion will be their respective criticisms of German coloniality and their
commitment to the creation of decolonial forms of community. By experimenting with mapping as an alternative way of reading
and writing, we will collectively draw a decolonial map of Berlin that seeks to locate this region in the entangled global histories
of Panafricanism, Third Worldism and Black feminism. This work will take place in close conversation with current activist and
scholarly work in Potsdam and Berlin around the memorialisation of German colonial history.

Questions of place and space have long played a crucial role in shaping Canadian cultural and societal debates as well as
national identity formation processes. This class will explore the significance of place and space in urban ‘CanLit’ as beyond
questions of background and setting, and instead as key to the aesthetic, political, social and cultural agendas of works of
Anglophone Canadian literature of the last 35 years. As we travel through Canada’s rich literary cityscapes, we will focus on
experiences of marginalisation and the ways in which authors engage with and challenge urban narratives of Canada as a
multicultural society and country of immigration. In cities as microcosms of social power structures we will encounter figures
such as the trans-American outcast (Chanady) and ex-centric (Hutcheon) who are made to occupy positions at the margins
of urban space and history from where they reconceptualise assumptions about the ‘Canadian city’. This class will introduce
students to theories of urban space and place, which we will read in dialogue with the primary texts as we interrogate how
and to what effect cities are constructed in literature by means of different literary strategies. In encountering both theoretical
texts and a variety of literary forms (novel, short story, poetry), students will have the chance to practice their critical reading
and writing skills, and are encouraged to develop their own research interests and questions. Students should be ready to
approach the texts with curiosity and open-mindedness, to challenge and reflect on their own assumptions, and to take risks
and make mistakes while doing so.
Please note: while the department seeks to return to in-presence teaching for the winter semester, this class will be taught

The course introduces into a period of crucial transition in Britain from the early 20th to the 21st century, a century of
immense, thorough social, political, cultural changes, challenges and threats. We will focus on social, cultural and literary
phenomena and follow up some major developments throughout the 20th century. Modernism, World War I/II, Cold War
are only a few keywords that relate to this course project and find repercussions in a wide range of partly controversial
experimental and avantgarde trends in arts (incl. literature). In literature, this primarily relates to a rejection of 19th-century
traditions and conventions and a termination of the previous consensus between author and reader in traditional realism.
Modernists, then, regarded themselves as a cosmopolitan avantgarde subverting bourgeois values. This subversion was
expressed both in complex formal experiment and in provocative subject matter such as urban cultural dislocation. The
realism-based continuity of chronological development was challenged new ways of tracing the flow of characters thoughts
found expression in the stream-of-consciousness technique. Complex collages of fragmentary images substituted allusions
to logical, teleological exposition of thoughts and can be read as repercussions of the writers alert awareness of new
anthropological and psychological theories. The trauma of World War I and II and the Holocaust as well as the Cold War left
repercussions in the arts too, for sure and certainly contributed to the development of postmodernist aesthetics.

with them. We will tackle questions of conspicuous consumption, the coloniality of food habits as well as ideologies associated
with the human body. The foundational tenet of this seminar is that food is of particular political relevance despite attempts to
portray it as 'just culture'.

In preparation of the course, students may watch The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972), Axone (2020) and The Great
Indian Kitchen (2021), which focus on class, race and gender, respectively. Prospective participants should also start looking
for possible colonial entanglements in the food cultures and material consumption with which they engage every day.
