Lerninhalte
This course centers on level-appropriate listening skills and English pronunication. Upon successful completion of this course,
students will be able
- to identify and correct major pronunciation problems in English (either "North American" or "British" English)
- to improve their pronunciation of individual sounds or groups of sounds
- to pronunce individual words correctly in connected speech
- to speak English with proper intonation
- to understand extended speech even when it is not clearly structured
- to understand extended speech when relationships are only implied and not signalled explicitly
- to understand and comment on academic presentations in English
Students are required to submit assignments on a regular basis. Independent study is an integral component of the course.

- to communicate persuasively in an intercultural context

This course helps students master oral communication of an informative, explanatory, and persuasive nature through
presenting and debating. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able
- to understand and identify the principles of these genres
- to structure and present an academic presentation in English effectively
- to present complex subjects; integrating sub-themes and developing particular points
- to formulate their ideas and opinions with precision and utilize appropriate language
- to relate their contributions skilfully to those of other speakers
- to round off with an appropriate conclusion
- to respond to audience questions with confidence
Students are required to participate in weekly class discussions. Independent study is an integral component of the course.

This lecture course is designed as an introductory survey of the study of Anglophone literature. The course will be taught
online in an asynchronous format. There will be weekly postings of video lectures and reading assignments, along with short
quizzes. New lectures and assignments will always be ready Tuesdays at 10:00. In addition, students will complete an online
tutorial with a few fixed deadlines (to be announced at the beginning of the semester).

This course introduces students to the basic terms, analytical techniques and interpretive strategies commonly employed in
Cultural Studies. Participants will learn to analyze concrete cultural phenomena in Anglophone nations with the help of some
of the fields key concepts, including power, identity, class, ethnicity, gender and representation. Through online discussions
and individual quizzes/submissions students will acquire the foundation for more advanced course work in Cultural Studies.
This course is taught in an asynchronous format, but will contain optional synchronous elements held during seminar times.

This course will introduce participants to the utopian genre, to fiction that served authors to plan and discuss wholesale
outlines for a better state (or even: world) order.
Participants will read excerpts from texts from the 16th to the 20th century. We will engage with questions such as:
• what is a utopia?
• is planning a better society a useful endeavor? Why was the utopian genre 'en vogue' in different historical periods?
• how are utopianism and colonialism related?
• aren't dystopias more realistic and thus more useful to society?
• Why did 1984 reappear as a bestseller when Trump was elected?

This seminar offers an overview over key events, texts, concepts, and literary movements of U.S.-American history from
the colonial period to the 1960s. We will study ed texts from the American colonial period, the American Revolution and the
Early Republic, the antebellum era, the Civil War and expansionism, and the Civil Rights movement, among others. The
texts and approaches employed in this class serve to combine the concerns of literary and cultural studies with the study of
American history. Attention: This class has a considerable workload of reading assignments. A course reader will be provided
on moodle. This class will take place online, with a predominantly asynchronous format (with weekly or biweekly video lectures
and reading assignments posted regularly). However, we will also meet via zoom during class time several times during
the semester, so please make sure that you are generally available for a zoom meeting during class time (Fridays from
10:15-11:45).

In a political moment in which we are witnessing the intensification of sexual and gendered nationalisms across the globe,
a situation exemplified and further augmented by the global circulation of SARS-CoV-2 and the intensification of border
protections that rely on the household, the heteronormative nuclear family and gendered divisions of labor to safeguard the
national body from contagion, in this seminar we will ask what role sexuality plays in various sociopolitical and historical
contexts, ranging from border regimes across the globe to our current pandemic circumstances. We will scrutinize sexuality
from a Cultural Studies-informed perspective and read canonic literature from Sexuality Studies and Queer Theory to make
sense of the crucial role sexuality plays in past and present politics.

grading. While we all are still in the grip of a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic and its physical, psychological, social and economic
repercussions, it is nevertheless imperative to also look at it from a "Biocultures" (Morris & Davis) perspective. This class will
offer a cultural pathway into the study of contagious diseases and epidemic events. As will become clear, epidemics have
always at the same time terrified and fascinated mankind. We will look at the way narratives about contagion and epidemics
function as a means to demarcate socio-cultural Otherness as well as national identity formations and belonging. We will
analyze literary and filmic representations of epidemics in order to uncover meaningful connections between key themes of
Cultural Studies, the dominance of the biomedical discourse and mankinds shifting understanding of contagion.

Folk horror speaks of old legends, of religious mania, of terrible traditions, and of vengeful nature. While the modern guise of
this genre dates back to the nineteenth century, its concerns are as ancient as they are topical. Indeed, folk horror, which can
be said to constitute a millennia-old tradition of storytelling, is currently enjoying a renaissance in anglophone literature. In this
class, we will read some of its recent instantiations. Discussion topics include tradition and reproduction, gender, nature, ritual,
history, and labour, among others.
Please note that this course takes place synchronously. We will meet online Fridays 2-4 PM via Discord, an easy-to-use and
free-of-charge software which, unlike Zoom, respects your privacy. We will use its voice chat function to discuss the reading
questions I post before each session. Also, announcements will be communicated to you via Discord. In conjunction with

Edwidge Danticat is arguably the foremost Haitian writer in English. In effortless prose seamlessly entangling the beautiful with
the tragic, Danticat evokes the fortitude and the plight of the people of Haiti, both in the Caribbean and in the diaspora. In this
course, we will sample crucial themes of her öuvre by reading short stories from her first collection, Krik? Krak! , as well as her
more recent novel, Claire of the Sea Light . Discussion topics include gender, class, remembrance, environmental devastation,

The film western as one of the most "classic" Hollywood genres is often said to epitomically represent the American Myth,
centred around what Frederick Jackson Turner had identified as the experience of the frontier. But these all-too-typical
stories, with their valiant cowboys, daredevil gunfighters, ladies in distress, vengeful Indians and Mexican bandits, also
lent themselves to various decentrings and revisions as the genre was successfully transformed in other parts of the world.
It is therefore inviting to rewrite the history of the western from the margins and understand the western as a trans- and
international genre in a world cinema framework. This course will depart from giving an overview of the golden era of
the classic Hollywood western, and then trace its transformations across the globe. While considering various (feminist,
postmodern, queer) revisions, a special focal point will be on postcolonial rewritings of the genre, which will specifically take
into account films from the Global South (for example, India and Latin America).

In the light of recent events in the US, the phenomenon of fascism has gained renewed attention. Yet what seems like a
new development actually has a long history. Since the UK and the US were never ruled by fascist regimes, fascist ideas
and tendencies thrive(d) especially in the cultural domain, but are occasionally brought into the political domain chiefly by
extra-parliamentary actors. In this course, we will trace the development of fascism in the UK and US through a cultural
lens, analysing key texts of the Anglophone Far Right, starting from early twentieth-century intellectual reactions against
liberal democracy and the burgeoning emancipatory movements as found in the avant-garde to the full-fledged support
for continental European fascist regimes by some Modernist authors. In the second part of the course, we will critically
discuss subcultural literature of the Far Right and explore the use of memes in the battle for ‘cultural hegemony’. Our literary
and cultural analyses will be supported by a robust theoretical framework on the nature of fascism and on new forms of
contemporary right-wing extremism. This course is primarily targeted at advanced BA students.
The course will be mostly synchronous with some asynchronous options.

Course Description: This seminar, centered on history, will be devoted to the investigations of the development of the US
American imperialism as an outgrowth of American exceptionalism. One of the core aims of the seminar will be the analysis
of the vocabulary, structure and (in case of recordings) the intonation of historical documents and speeches that have shaped

This course will introduce participants to the utopian genre, to fiction that served authors to plan and discuss wholesale
outlines for a better state (or even: world) order.
Participants will read excerpts from texts from the 16th to the 20th century. We will engage with questions such as:
• what is a utopia?
• is planning a better society a useful endeavor? Why was the utopian genre 'en vogue' in different historical periods?
• how are utopianism and colonialism related?
• aren't dystopias more realistic and thus more useful to society?
• Why did 1984 reappear as a bestseller when Trump was elected?
Materials will be provided via moodle; the course will meet biweekly via zoom.

This course is part of a series which closely looks at a classic of colonial literature, and investigates how it has been
transformed in later re-writings. The classic at stake, here, is Joseph Conrad's novel Heart of Darkness, first published in
1899, which we will discuss in detail. We will then turn to a number of very different postcolonial revisions: Chinua Achebe's
novel Things Fall Apart, Francis Ford Coppola's film Apocalypse Now, and Wilson Harris's novel Palace of the Peacock.
Additinoal texts will be provided online. Postcolonial theory will help us to better understand and place these works.

The epitome of canonization, Shakespeare’s tragedies are constantly staged and restaged, appropriated and re-articulated,
thus ensuring their continuous and vital presence in Anglophone literature. In this class, we will read Hamlet, Othello, and King
Lear. Close readings of particular passages will be paired with analyses of early modern English culture(s). Discussion topics
include the supernatural, dramatic action and inaction, love and jealousy, race, madness, social hierarchies, natural spaces,
aesthetics, and ideology. We will also inquire into the notion of the tragic and its persistent resonance in today’s cultures.
Please note that this course takes place synchronously. We will meet online Thursdays 2-4 PM via Discord, an easy-to-use
and free-of-charge software which, unlike Zoom, respects your privacy. We will use its voice chat function to discuss the
reading questions I post before each session. Also, announcements will be communicated to you via Discord. In conjunction
with Moodle, the latter will be indispensable to our seminar. So, if you are disinclined to use that software, I am afraid there is
no point in joining this class.

Please purchase: Hamlet Othello King Lear Any of the countless editions available for each of the texts will do. However, I
highly recommend the Arden editions of each tragedy, which, by providing a plethora of insightful annotations, can significantly
mitigate the difficulty of reading these early modern texts. The Arden editions should prove helpful especially to those who
havent been exposed to much early modern English literature yet. Other texts will be made available via Moodle.

Over the course of the seminar, students will write a learning journal consisting of reading responses and reflections on class
discussions (3 credits). To gain 6 credits, students will additionally submit a term paper.

Folk horror speaks of old legends, of religious mania, of terrible traditions, and of vengeful nature. While the modern guise of
this genre dates back to the nineteenth century, its concerns are as ancient as they are topical. Indeed, folk horror, which can
be said to constitute a millennia-old tradition of storytelling, is currently enjoying a renaissance in anglophone literature. In this
class, we will read some of its recent instantiations. Discussion topics include tradition and reproduction, gender, nature, ritual,
history, and labour, among others.
