Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able - to identify and correct major pronunciation problems in English (either "North American" or "British" English) - to improve their pronunciation of individual sounds or groups of sounds - to pronunce individual words correctly in connected speech - to speak English with proper intonation - to understand extended speech even when it is not clearly structured - to understand extended speech when relationships are only implied and not signalled explicitly - to understand and comment on academic presentations in English Students are required to submit assignments on a regular basis. Participants will learn to analyze concrete cultural phenomena in Anglophone nations with the help of some of the fields key concepts, including power, identity, class, ethnicity, gender and representation. Through online discussions and individual quizzes/submissions students will acquire the foundation for more advanced course work in Cultural Studies. This class will offer a cultural pathway into the study of contagious diseases and epidemic events. As will become clear, epidemics have always at the same time terrified and fascinated mankind. We will look at the way narratives about contagion and epidemics function as a means to demarcate socio-cultural Otherness as well as national identity formations and belonging. But these all-too-typical stories, with their valiant cowboys, daredevil gunfighters, ladies in distress, vengeful Indians and Mexican bandits, also lent themselves to various decentrings and revisions as the genre was successfully transformed in other parts of the world. It is therefore inviting to rewrite the history of the western from the margins and understand the western as a trans- and international genre in a world cinema framework. This course will depart from giving an overview of the golden era of the classic Hollywood western, and then trace its transformations across the globe. In the light of recent events in the US, the phenomenon of fascism has gained renewed attention. Yet what seems like a new development actually has a long history. Since the UK and the US were never ruled by fascist regimes, fascist ideas and tendencies thrive(d) especially in the cultural domain, but are occasionally brought into the political domain chiefly by extra-parliamentary actors. In this course, we will trace the development of fascism in the UK and US through a cultural lens, analysing key texts of the Anglophone Far Right, starting from early twentieth-century intellectual reactions against liberal democracy and the burgeoning emancipatory movements as found in the avant-garde to the full-fledged support for continental European fascist regimes by some Modernist authors. In the second part of the course, we will critically discuss subcultural literature of the Far Right and explore the use of memes in the battle for ‘cultural hegemony’. Our literary and cultural analyses will be supported by a robust theoretical framework on the nature of fascism and on new forms of contemporary right-wing extremism. The classic at stake, here, is Joseph Conrad's novel Heart of Darkness, first published in 1899, which we will discuss in detail. We will then turn to a number of very different postcolonial revisions: Chinua Achebe's novel Things Fall Apart, Francis Ford Coppola's film Apocalypse Now, and Wilson Harris's novel Palace of the Peacock. Additinoal texts will be provided online. Postcolonial theory will help us to better understand and place these works. The epitome of canonization, Shakespeare’s tragedies are constantly staged and restaged, appropriated and re-articulated, thus ensuring their continuous and vital presence in Anglophone literature. In this class, we will read Hamlet, Othello, and King Lear. Close readings of particular passages will be paired with analyses of early modern English culture(s). Discussion topics include the supernatural, dramatic action and inaction, love and jealousy, race, madness, social hierarchies, natural spaces, aesthetics, and ideology. We will also inquire into the notion of the tragic and its persistent resonance in today’s cultures. Please note that this course takes place synchronously. We will meet online Thursdays 2-4 PM via Discord, an easy-to-use and free-of-charge software which, unlike Zoom, respects your privacy. We will use its voice chat function to discuss the reading questions I post before each session. Also, announcements will be communicated to you via Discord. In conjunction with Moodle, the latter will be indispensable to our seminar. So, if you are disinclined to use that software, I am afraid there is no point in joining this class. However, I highly recommend the Arden editions of each tragedy, which, by providing a plethora of insightful annotations, can significantly mitigate the difficulty of reading these early modern texts. While the modern guise of this genre dates back to the nineteenth century, its concerns are as ancient as they are topical. Indeed, folk horror, which can be said to constitute a millennia-old tradition of storytelling, is currently enjoying a renaissance in anglophone literature. In this class, we will read some of its recent instantiations. Discussion topics include tradition and reproduction, gender, nature, ritual, history, and labour, among others.
