               Aufgaben eigenständig in Python bearbeitet.

Master of Science - Cognitive Systems: Language, Learning and Reasoning - Prüfungsversion Wintersemester 2014/15

               Kommentar

This seminar -- jointly given together with Psychology department and also open to the MSc "embodied cognition" -- will
provide an introduction to the field of "human/robot interaction", from a psychological perspective (what kinds of processes
do humanoid robots trigger in humans? how can they be used for psychological studies?) as well as from a natural language
processing perspective (how can verbal communication be modelled with such robots? which particular demands does such a
situated interaction setting put on the language processing?).

This will be a reading- and presentation-based class, and it will be expected that all participants present at least one topic.

The seminar will be held online. The link to join the first meeting (April 13th, 2pm - 4pm) will be posted here in time.

We study the role of "text as data" in the Political Sciences (as one prominent case of Social Sciences) and compare their
typical research paradigms to those that are common in the CompLinguistics/NLP community. Text genres of interest will
include parliamentary debate, party manifestos, public documents from NGOs, etc. Prominent methods that we will cover are
the analysis of sentiment and argument, topic modeling, and "scaling", i.e. mapping documents to scales like the "left-right
spectrum". The course has two parts: In phase 1 we read papers, to get acquainted with the PolSci research perspectives,
and in phase 2 students will work on term projects; these can be either software projects or empirical studies.

NOTICE: An info sheet, including the zoom link for the sessions, will be emailed to PULS-registered students on Tuesday April
               14th.

In this project seminar we will build an interactive system that can serve as the "eyes" of the user, through which the user can
investigate a virtual environment. More specifically, the goal is to use (and potentially improve) current deep learning-based
models that can describe images, in the context of an interactive system that is controlled with verbal (written) commands.

The students will gain familiarity with current state-of-the-art models in Language and Vision (a field at the intersection
between computer vision and natural language processing), as well as approaches to modelling dialogue. A particular feature
will be the emphasis on actually deploying these models in an interactive setting.

The project will be group work, with the division of tasks to be determined in the first meetings. (The meetings will be remote,
and the work has to be coordinated remotely as well.)

               The first meeting will take place on April 15, 10-12am, via Zoom;

               Kommentar

”Alexa, can you help me assemble this shelf?” Interactions like these are still far from the scientific reality and that’s not merely
because robotic hardware development is still lacking behind. The amount of
reasoning and human-robot cooperation that is required to solve this task is complex: The robot needs to understand what
a shelf is, what needs to be done to assemble one, observe what the human is doing and infer what actions could best
support the human in the given task. The aim of this project is to get an understanding of the complexity of such human-agent
collaboration from a practical and theoretical perspective. To abstract from the challenges of robotic hardware, we will use
Minetest (an open-source version of Minecraft) as a testbed in this course. Given a simple embodied Minetest agent, your
task will be to write a dialogue- and action-system for this agent that is able to perform meaningful tasks by listening to the
commands and observing the actions of the human player. The project work will be performed in teams and the focus of each
project, as well as the collaborative task to perform, can be decided freely by each team. The practical project work will be
enhanced by a series of seminar talks and paper discussions to get a better understanding of the fundamentals of embodied
               interaction.

               Voraussetzung

To follow the course, you need to have completed your Basic Modules and have a solid foundation in programming, ideally in
               Python.

               The first meeting will take place on April 15, 10-12am, via Zoom;

To follow the course, you need to have completed your Basic Modules and have a solid foundation in programming, ideally in
               Python.

In this project, student teams build their own problem solvers (or components thereof) based on modern constraint technology.
Foremost this concerns ASP solving technology but equally well that of SAT, PB and related areas.

Glossar

          Glossar
