Research funds for the German Sport University (GSU)

Aim of the grant
Call No. 1 is part of the research funding schemes of the German Sport University Cologne (GSU) and
supports especially young scientists. Therefore, the German Sports University Cologne promotes per-
son-based innovative research ideas with relevance for basic research and/ or applied sciences in the
field of sport sciences. Unique modules of a bottom-up research project as well as small projects as
part of the final thesis (master) are possible.

Financial modalities
Proposals with a funding up to 2.500 € for a master’s student will be accepted. A grant from the re-
search funding schemes of the university may be the only source of funding for the project, but can
also be used as additional funding. In case the declaration of other funding’s is mandatory. Students,
not employed at the GSU, can apply for 50 % of the funding as a research grant (SHK/WHF/WHK, 5 to
maximal 9 hours/week). The grant can be spent on financing of personnel costs, equipment and travel
expenses. Projects will be approved for a period of twelve months (at most until the end of the study).
An award will be made if the university budget allows its implementation and if the university has
enough resources in the award year.

Application process
Master´s students of the German Sport University are eligible to apply. A joint application with other
students is possible. Only one proposal per person is allowed. The proposal has to include the outlined
points of the application form including the documents referred to therein as an attachment. Please
note: If the formal requirements of the application form (page numbers, etc.) are not met, the ap-
plication will not be accepted.
Applications can be submitted in German or English. Complete application documents have to be
handed in electronically (via e-mail, max. 5 MB) as one pdf document to the Department of Research
and Young Academics (forschung-dshs@dshs-koeln.de). Please state in the email subject line the call
number (Call 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) for which you apply (e.g. Call 1 for this funding line).

Please consider the current and long-term impact of the Corona pandemic in your project and time
planning, also regarding flexible adaptation.

Review process and approval
Scientific reviewers are involved in the review process. Core reviewing criteria are:
    - Individual-related aspects (e.g. previous research achievements)
    - Relevance of the topic
    - Quality and feasibility of the work programme
    - Appropriateness of methods and models

Approvals are estimated to be given not later than June 2021.

Final report
Results of the project should be handed in as a final report (see guidelines) six months after ending of
the funding period to the Department of Research and Young Academics. In case of a submitted or
published manuscript (in a high-ranking journal) or a conference contribution, please hand in these
documents as well. The content-related information may then be less detailed. Furthermore, results
should be presented at a conference at the German Sport University Cologne. In addition, selected
results of the project should be submitted to the universities newspaper KURIER (or its future maga-
zine) or science magazine IMPULSE. The project should be added to the research information system
(FIS).

     Internetseiten der DSHS Köln elektronisch zur Verfügung gestellt wird, veröffentlicht werden. Mir
     ist bekannt, dass ich der Veröffentlichung in elektronischer Form nach Erhalt des Bewilligungs-
     schreibens jederzeit bei der Abteilung Forschung und wissenschaftlicher Nachwuchs
     (http://www.dshs-koeln.de/forschung-und-wissenschaftlicher-nachwuchs) widersprechen kann.

o    die bewilligten Mittel ausschließlich im Interesse einer zielstrebigen Verwirklichung des geförder-
     ten Vorhabens einzusetzen und bei der Verwendung und Abrechnung dieser Mittel die haushalts-
     rechtlichen Regelungen der DSHS Köln zu beachten. Die DSHS behält sich vor, die Bewilligung ganz
     oder teilweise zu widerrufen und einen Erstattungsanspruch geltend zu machen (sie orientiert

     Nachwuchs vor Umsetzung mitzuteilen. Die DSHS behält sich vor, die Plausibilität von Änderungen
     im Forschungsprojekt prüfen zu lassen.
o    die mit einer Förderung einhergehende Lehrverpflichtung, sofern zutreffend, zu erfüllen.
o    der DSHS Köln in dem im Bewilligungsschreiben angegebenem Zeitraum einen Zwischen- und/o-
     der Abschlussbericht zur Förderung vorzulegen.
o    bei der Planung und Durchführung von Versuchen am Menschen, an identifizierbarem menschli-
     chen Material und an identifizierbaren Daten, die vom Weltärztebund (WMA - World Medical
     Association) im Juni 1964 verabschiedete Deklaration von Helsinki (Originaltitel: DECLARATION
     OF HELSINKI - Ethical Principles for Medical Research Involving Human Subjects) in der jeweils

gültigen Fassung und zudem die Bestimmungen des Embryonenschutzgesetzes und des Stamm-
    zellgesetzes (StZG), des Arzneimittelgesetzes (§§ 40 - 42 A MG) und des Medizinproduktgesetzes
    (§§ 17 - 19 M PG ) in den jeweils geltenden Fassungen zu beachten.
o   bei Tierversuchen die Vorschriften des Tierschutzgesetzes einzuhalten und im Falle der Genehmi-
    gungspflicht die Arbeiten erst dann zu beginnen, wenn eine entsprechende Genehmigung vor-
    liegt.
o   bei gentechnologischen Experimenten die Vorschriften des Gesetzes zur Regelung von Fragen der
    Gentechnik vom 20. Juni 1990 (BG BL. 1990 I, S. 1080) zu beachten und die Arbeiten erst dann zu
    beginnen, wenn die nach diesem Gesetz und den dazu erlassenen Verordnungen erforderlichen
    Genehmigungen vorliegen.

    Sport University Cologne. The DSHS reserves the right to revoke the grant in whole or in part and

o   inform the department of research and young academics about significant changes in the research
    project that affect the duration, funding, methodology, research question or aim of the project.

o   submit a research progress or final report to the German Sport University Cologne according to
    the dates specified in the award letter.
o   plan and conduct any experiments involving humans, including identifiable samples taken from
    humans and identifiable data, in compliance with the most current versions of the German Em-
    bryo Protection Act (Embryonenschutzgesetz), Stem Cell Act (Stammzellgesetz), Pharmaceutical
    Drugs Act (Arzneimittelgesetz), Medical Devices Act (Medizinproduktegesetz), and Declaration of
    Helsinki.

o   adhere to the regulations and provisions of the Animal Protection Act (Tierschutzgesetz) and the
    Experimental Animals Ordinance (Versuchstierverordnung) and will not begin with any experi
    ments until approval has been given by authorities in charge.
o   adhere to the provisions of the Genetic Engineering Act (Gentechnikgesetz) with regard to exper-
    iments involving genetically modified organisms (GMO) and will not begin with any experi ments
    until any approvals necessary according to the law and its regulations has been given by authori-
