Our Child Is Different
At first glance, this is a completely normal family. Two children are living with their parents
on an old farm in the Eifel region. But Justus is increasingly having problems. He is
aggressive and argues a lot with his parents and his sister Sophia. He refuses to do his
homework and can’t find friends. According to the diagnosis, Justus is suffering from ADHD.
He now has to learn to recognize and control his behavior. Everyone has to start thinking
differently. It’s a long, difficult process, as a television crew found out after one year of
filming.

Unser Kind ist anders
Auf den ersten Blick handelt es sich um eine ganz normale Familie: Zwei Kinder leben mit
ihren Eltern auf einem alten Bauernhof in der Eifel. Doch mit Sohn Justus gibt es immer
häufiger Probleme: Er ist aggressiv, streitet heftig mit Eltern und Schwester Sophia,
verweigert die Hausaufgaben, findet keine Freunde. Laut Diagnose hat Justus ADHS.
Justus muss nun lernen, sein Verhalten zu erkennen und zu steuern. Alle müssen
umdenken. Es ist ein langer und schwieriger Prozess. Ein TV-Team begleitet Julius und
seine Familie ein Jahr lang.

Die bunte Welt des Stephan Koziol
Der Odenwald in Südhessen, seit jeher ein Ort der Legenden und Mythen. In dieser
romantischen Idylle findet man nicht nur Geschichten über die sagenhaften Nibelungen,
sondern auch seit über achtzig Jahren eine Firma, die bunte Traumkugeln aus Plastik
produziert. Man sieht diese Kugeln überall auf der Welt, in Japan, in den USA, in Australien
oder Südamerika. Besser bekannt sind sie als Schneekugeln. Der Vater des "Glücks-
Fabrikanten", wie man den heutigen Firmenbesitzer Stephan Koziol auch nennt, hatte die
Idee, nachdem er mit seinem VW-Käfer in einer Schneewehe stecken blieb. Er schaute
durch das ovale Rückfenster und sah Rehe im Schnee stehen.

The Colorful World of Stephan Koziol
The Odenwald hills south of Frankfurt have always been a place of myths and romance and
stories auch as the Nibelungen saga. For some 80 years,this idyll has also been the location
of a factory that manufactures beautiful,colorful plastic globes. These globes can be found
all over the world, in Japan, in the USA, in Australia and in South America. They’re better
known as snow globes. The company founder, Stephan Koziol, had the idea when he got
stuck in a snowdrift with his VW Beetle. He looked through the oval rear-view mirror and saw
deer standing in the snow.

El colorido mundo de Stephan Koziol
El bosque de Odenwald, en el sur de Hesse, fue siempre un lugar plagado de leyendas y
mitos. Estos parajes románticos no sólo inspiran historias sobre asombrosos nibelungos.
También encontramos aquí, desde hace más de 80 años una empresa que fabrica esferas
de plástico de colores brillantes. Sus productos están por todo el mundo, tanto en Japón
como Estados Unidos, Australia o Latinoamérica. ¿Quién no conoce esas famosas esferas
de nieve? El padre del "fabricante de felicidad" como se conoce a Stephan Koziol, actual
propietario de la empresa, tuvo la idea un día que su escarabajo Volkswagen se quedó
aislado en medio de una ventisca. Miró a través del óvalo de la ventanilla trasera y vio a los
corzos en la nieve.

Strom ohne Atom – Wie wir den Ausstieg schaffen
Wie schnell können wir unsere Atomkraftwerke abschalten? Bis 2022, 2020 oder gar bis
2015? Prof. Olav Hohmeyer vom "Zentrum für nachhaltige Energiesysteme" in Flensburg ist
sicher, dass bereits ab 2015 Deutschland ohne Zukäufe aus dem Ausland ohne Atomstrom
versorgt werden kann. Das würde den Durchschnittshaushalt allenfalls um einige Euro im
Monat belasten. Durch Nutzung von Kohle- und Gaskraftwerken würde sich der CO2-
Ausstoß zwar in einer Übergangszeit erhöhen, aber nach 2050 – wahrscheinlich schon
wesentlich früher – könnte Deutschland seinen Strom komplett regenerativ herstellen.

The Transition Test – Saying No to Nuclear Energy
How soon can Germany switch off its nuclear power stations? By 2022, 2020 or even by
2015? Professor Olav Hohmeyer, an expert with the Centre for Sustainable Energy Systems
in Flensburg, is certain that Germany will manage a turnaround by 2015, without buying in
nuclear power from neighbouring countries. He says this change would only cost average
households a few euros more a month. By using coal and gas power stations Germany’s
carbon emissions would increase during the transition period, but from 2050 onwards, and
probably already significantly sooner, Germany could produce all of its electricity from
renewable sources.

Electricidad sin energía atómica – Hacia el fin de la era nuclear
¿Cuánto tardará Alemania en desconectar sus centrales nucleares? ¿Hasta 2022, 2020, o
quizá sólo hasta 2015? El profesor Olav Hohmeyer, del "Centro para Sistemas de Energía
Renovable" en Flensburg, afirma que será en 2015. Alemania se podrá abastecer sin
energía atómica y sin depender de las compras al extranjero. Al principio la cuenta de la luz
se incrementaría en algunos euros y las emisiones de CO2 aumentarían a causa del uso de
gas y el carbón durante los años de transición. Pero a partir de 2050, o quizá antes,
Alemania podría producir toda su electricidad a partir de fuentes renovables.

Freiwillige vor! – Einsatz mit Engagement
Etwa 23 Millionen Bundesbürger sind ehrenamtlich tätig. Deutschland: Eine Nation von
Freiwilligen, ohne die in vielen Bereichen keine Hilfe geleistet werden könnte. Zum Beispiel
die Münchner Tafel. 400 Ehrenamtliche, darunter Lotti Krämer (69), organisieren
wöchentlich einen Markt mit gespendeten Lebensmitteln. Der Andrang ist groß. Oder Farid
Vatanparast. Der Ex-Boxer fördert Kinder und Jugendliche, die in der Schule
Schwierigkeiten haben durch Nachhilfe und Boxtraining. Das Ehrenamt gewinnt nach dem
Wegfall des Zivildienstes immer mehr Bedeutung. Der Bundesfreiwilligendienst trat an seine
Stelle.

Entlang der Oder zur Neiße
Wer sich von Westen der Oder im Osten nähert, sollte die Reise entlang der deutsch-
polnischen Grenze in Zollbrücke beginnen. Ein 50-Seelen-Dorf, das schon seit über 200
Jahren weder Zollschranke noch Brücke besitzt. 1753 siedelten hier nach dem Bau des
Oderkanals – auf Anordnung Friedrichs des Großen – die ersten Kolonisten. Der
Schauspieler Thomas Rühmann begleitet das Bilderbuch-Kamerateam entlang der Oder,
durch das wildromantische Schlaubetal bis in die Stadt an der Neiße.

Einmal Irak und zurück – Urlaub im Krisengebiet
Max, Joy und Hjördis, drei junge Rucksacktouristen aus Deutschland, wollen in den Irak.
Ihre Reise startet im südöstlichen Zipfel der Türkei. Von dort geht es weiter nach Erbil, der
Kurden-Metropole im Irak. Mit hunderttausenden Kurden feiern sie das Newroz-Frühjahrs-
Fest. Im jahrhundertealten Ort Hasankeyf erleben sie, wie der Ort durch ein
Staudammprojekt gefährdet ist. Zum ersten Mal richtig Angst haben sie, als sie in an den
Checkpoints auf schwer bewaffnete Soldaten treffen und erfahren, dass Touristen in einem
nur zweihundert Kilometer entfernten Ort durch einen Anschlag gestorben sind.

To Iraq and Back – Holidays in a War Zone
Max, Joy and Hjördis are three young backpackers from Germany who want to visit Iraq.
The film illustrates how they start their journey in southeastern Turkey, then head to Arbil,
the capital of the Kurdistan Region in Iraq, and celebrate the Newroz festival on the spring
equinox with hundreds of thousands of Kurds. In the ancient town of Hasankeyf, they learn
how the place is being threatened by a dam project. The first time it gets really scary for
them is when they meet heavily armed soldiers at the checkpoints. They are told that
tourists died in an attack just two hundred kilometers away.

Ida y vuelta a Irak – Vacaciones en la región en crisis
Max, Joy y Hjördis, tres turistas de mochila alemanes, planean un viaje a Irak. Inician su
recorrido en el extremo suroriental de Turquía, desde donde se dirigen a Erbil, la metrópolis
kurda de Irak. Allí celebran junto a cientos de miles de kurdos la fiesta de Newroz, que
coincide con el inicio de la primavera. En la localidad Hasankeyf se enteran de los planes
del gobierno de construir una presa que sumergirá parte de este antiquísimo asentamiento.
Al llegar a los pasos fronterizos custodiados por soldados armados hasta los dientes
sienten miedo por primera vez. Allí escuchan que varios turistas han muerto en un atentado
a sólo 200 Km. de allí.

Meryem geht in die Comenius Hauptschule in Duisburg, eine sogenannte
"Brennpunktschule". Fast alle von Meryems Schulkameraden haben einen sogenannten
Migrationshintergrund. Die meisten lernen erst in der Schule Deutsch. "In der 5. Klasse
waren wir halt nur noch zwei Deutsche in der Klasse. Die restlichen waren Ausländer, also
Türken und Araber," sagt Meryem. Die 350 Mädchen und Jungen erwartet ein schlechter
Start im Leben, denn das Problem ist nicht nur die Sprache, ob auf dem Schulhof oder im
Unterricht. Die meisten – so Schulleiterin Monika Rennings – bringen ihre Probleme auch
noch von zu Hause mit.

Foreign in Their Own Country – German Schoolchildren as a Minority
Meryem goes to Duisburg’s Comenius secondary school, labeled a "high-risk school” by city
officials. Almost all Meryem’s schoolmates have an immigrant background. Many of them
are just starting to learn German in school. "By the 5th grade, there were only two of us
Germans left in the class”, says Meryem, "the rest were foreigners, that is Turks and Arabs.”
The 350 boys and girls can look forward to a less-than-ideal start in life. Whether in class or
in the schoolyard, language isn’t their only problem. Headmistress Monika Rennings says
most of them bring their problems with them to school from home, whether consciously or
not.

Die Wundermacher von Świebodzin
Świebodzin in Polen hat Rio de Janeiro in Brasilien eingeholt. Denn seit 2010 steht in
Swiebodzin, rund 70 Kilometer östlich von Frankfurt an der Oder, die größte Jesus-Statue
der Welt. Gebaut auf einem Acker mit künstlichem Hügel, überragt sie das weltberühmte
Vorbild an der Copacabana um ganze fünf Meter. Und fünf Jahre lang hat Pfarrer Zawadzki
am Christus-Denkmal gebaut und dabei allen Widrigkeiten, allen Baumängeln, Baustopps
und Protesten der Bewohner getrotzt. Je aussichtsloser die Lage war, desto mehr hat er an
ein Wunder geglaubt.

The Miracle Workers of Świebodzin
Świebodzin in Poland has caught up with Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, building the world’s
largest Christ statue. Świebodzin, around 70 kilometers east of the German border, has had
the statue since 2010, built on a field with an artificial hill. It is a full five meters taller than its
world-famous model on the Copacabana. Pastor Zawadzki spent five years building the
statue, defying all the odds and overcoming construction faults and stops, and protests by
local residents. The more hopeless the situation was, the more he believed in a miracle.

El redentor de Świebodzin
El mayor cristo del mundo no está en Río de Janeiro, sino en Polonia. En la pequeña
comunidad polaca de Swiebodzin, a 70 Km. de Fráncfort del Oder, se erige desde 2010 la
estatua de Cristo más alta del mundo. Construida en un campo de labranza sobre una
colina artificial, supera en 5 metros la altura del famoso redentor de Copacabana. Su
artífice, el párroco Zawadzki, invirtió cinco años en la construcción que ha llevado a su fin a
pesar de innumerables inconvenientes, interrupciones de obras y protestas de vecinos. Y
cuanto más desesperante era la situación, más creía en los milagros.

Unser Traum von Afrika
Mamadou kam vor 20 Jahren ohne Schulabschluss und Berufsausbildung nach
Deutschland und arbeitete sich zum Facharbeiter hoch. Der Senegalese leidet immer noch
unter dem Heimweh nach seiner Großfamilie in dem kleinen Ort Waoundé am Rande der
Sahara. Mit 80 Senegalesen aus Waoundé, die alle in München als Hilfsarbeiter tätig sind,
setzt sich Mamadou deshalb für ein Berufsausbildungszentrum in seiner Heimat ein.
Erspartes, Spenden und die deutsche staatliche Entwicklungshilfe sollen helfen. Die ersten
Auszubildenden haben die Abschlussprüfung als Schlosser, Schreiner und Elektriker
bestanden.

Our Dream of Africa
Mamadou came to Germany from Senegal twenty years ago without school qualifications or
job training. He worked his way up to become a skilled worker. He still suffers from
homesickness. He misses his large family in the small town of Waoundé on the edge of the
Sahara. Together with eighty Senegalese citizens from Waoundé, who all work as labourers
in Munich, Mamadou is now working to create a job training center in his home country.
Savings, donations and the German government’s development aid will be used to fund the
project. The first trainees have already competed their final exams and are now qualified
fitters, joiners and electricians.

Nuestro sueño de África
Mamadou llegó a Alemania hace 20 años procedente de África, sin certificado escolar ni
formación profesional, y actualmente es obrero especializado. El senegalés siente aún
nostalgia de su tierra y de su gran familia en el poblado de Waoundé, cerca del Sahara.
Junto con otros 80 senegaleses de Waoundé que trabajan en Múnich, Mamadou ha puesto
todo su empeño en la creación de un centro de formación profesional en su tierra natal.
Para ello cuenta con algunos ahorros, así como donativos y ayuda de la Organización
Estatal Alemana de Ayuda al Desarrollo. Y algunos alumnos ya han conseguido el título de
cerrajero, carpintero o electricista.

The High Art of Parachute Testing
For decades parachutes have been an indispensable feature of aviation safety. What may
seem simple and straightforward is actually getting more sophisticated all the time.
Researchers both civilian and military keep testing the limits of the doable and setting the
bar ever higher. Now, parachutes can be used to bring small planes safely to earth in the
event of an emergency. The pilot doesn’t even have to leave the aircraft: a small rocket
pulls out and deploys the chutes, and the plane glides gently to the ground.

Experimento paracaídas
El paracaídas es desde hace años imprescindible para la seguridad de vuelo y la técnica se
perfecciona continuamente. La investigación civil y militar intenta traspasar los límites de lo
posible, por ejemplo, instalando paracaídas en aviones deportivos. Los pilotos no tienen
que abandonar el avión. En caso de emergencia se dispone de un cohete que estira los
paracaídas, de forma que la nave puede bajar al suelo con suavidad.

Today they’ll find out whether they get to work as waiters, barkeepers or stewards. Cruise
ships are in urgent need of staff. The market is booming. One of Germany’s largest shipping
companies is "AIDA Cruises”. Every year the company buys a new vessel. The
management department is currently hiring 4000 new employees. It’s a tough job: seven
days a week, on twelve-hour shifts, non-stop for six months. Then they get two months off.
The crew cabins are cramped and don’t have windows. Nevertheless, many applicants
consider it a dream job.
