Terminal in Amsterdam
On February 21, 2014, employees, guests and port representatives met
on the port premises of the ALBA Group in Amsterdam. Reason for this
was the inauguration of a new, cutting-edge export terminal operated by
the ALBA Group subsidiary ALBA Scrap Trading BV (AST) which is based
on site.

im Hafengelände der ALBA Group in Amsterdam. Anlass war die

Betreiber die vor Ort ansässige ALBA Group-Tochter ALBA Scrap

kilometers distance. Even overland, the terminal is easily
accessible: via motorway or on rails by train.
Already in 2005, the group considered an independent
export option. With the start-up of the new terminal, the
ALBA Group secures the export possibilities for steel and
non-ferrous metal as well as the possibility to serve the
customer-related high quality requirements. An area of
27 000 square meters provides storage space for more than
200 000 tons of material; this is five times the quantity of
the previous ALBA location in Dordrecht. Apart from the
ferrous metals, also non-ferrous metals, plastics and paper
can be stored and traded as mono-fraction material. The
extensive space enables the batching of high qualities.
Facilities of the new location comprise the storehouse, the
administrative building, material handlers, wheel loaders
and a mobile harbor crane from Liebherr. The Liebherr
LHM 550, which reached the terminal by ship, has a load
capacity of 40 tons and an outreach of up to 50 meters.
The material comes mainly from the Benelux and other
European countries where the ALBA Group is active. From
Amsterdam, the secondary raw materials are exported to
Turkey as well as to India, Spain, Greece, the Far East and to
the United Arab Emirates.
During the inauguration ceremony, the editor-in-chief of
the recovery, Dr. Petra Strunk, had the possibility to speak
with Rob Nansink, Managing Director of ALBA SE, about
the significance of the new terminal and the future orienta-
tion of the ALBA Group.
recovery: One year ago, you went to the Berlin headquar-
ters of the ALBA Group to present your plans for a new
export terminal. Why here of all places and why just now?
Rob Nansink: Since January 1st, 2013, I have been responsi-
ble for all material flows, thus also for ferrous scrap - previ-
ously I was responsible for non-ferrous metals and in the
1990s, I founded Europe Metals. This subsidiary of ALBA
Group is an exporting company in the field of non-ferrous
metals. Already at that time, it was difficult to sell higher
tonnages in the European market. Therefore, we have moved
towards Asia/China and since then we are on the market,
every day.
recovery: This means, in Europe, it was not possible to
sell certain non-ferrous metals in large quantities and very
quickly?
Rob Nansink: Exactly. And if you run a trading company,
you must have the possibility to handle goods quickly to
gain a foothold in the market. Nowadays, the situation of
ferrous scrap is similar to that of non-ferrous metals in the
1990s. At that time, one was absolutely dependent on the
situation of the European melting companies. As a result,
sales were sluggish. Today, we have a similar situation in the
European steel mills and therefore there is no alternative to
export for us.
The storage of certain tonnages of ferrous scraps require a
large waterside warehouse. You need a connection for big
ships and also the possibility to handle other materials, such
as paper or plastics. In Amsterdam, all requirements were
met – this is why we have built the terminal here. It allows
us worldwide trading and we can offer large volumes.

27 000 Quadratmetern können über 200 000 Tonnen
Material gelagert werden, das ist fünfmal so viel
wie im bisherigen ALBA-Standort in Dordrecht.
Neben den FE-Metallen werden zukünftig auch
Nichteisenmetalle, Kunststoffe und Papier sortenrein
gelagert und gehandelt. Das großzügige Platzangebot
ermöglicht es hochwertige Qualitäten zu chargie-
ren. Zur Ausstattung des neuen Standortes gehören
neben der Lagerhalle und dem Verwaltungsgebäude
ein Umschlagbagger, ein Radlader und ein Hafen-
mobilkran von Liebherr. Der Liebherr LHM 550,
der per Schiff das Terminal erreichte, besitzt eine
Tragfähigkeit von 40 Tonnen und eine Ausladung bis
50 Meter.
Das Material stammt vorwiegend aus den Benelux-
Ländern und weiteren europäischen Ländern, in
denen die ALBA Group aktiv ist. Von Amsterdam
aus werden die sekundären Rohstoffe in die Türkei
sowie nach Indien, Spanien, Griechenland, Fernost
und in die Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate exportiert.
Während der Einweihungsfeierlichkeiten hatte die
