“First we only focus on the preliminary round and we try to reach a per-

current German handball player of the year. “I hope for full arenas, for
a great atmosphere and exciting games. If we manage this, we can in-
crease the popularity and can cause a real boom,” says Loerper.
Even the current re-elected IHF President Dr Hassan Moustafa sha-
res those high expectations: “We hope for one of the best ever Wo-
men’s World Championships. The German Handball Federation
knows how to organize a tournament like this and the Germans know
how to attract many fans to the arenas.”
Everybody who is anybody in women’s handball has qualified for the
event, which will be thrown-off with the opening match Germany vs
Cameroon on 1 December and will conclude with the final in Hamburg
on 17 December. All eleven nations, which so far have managed to
become women’s world champions in the previous 22 editions, have
clinched their berth for Germany 2017. Defending champions are the
Norwegians, who aim for their fourth title after 1999, 2011 and 2015.
Olympic champions Russia are eager to win their first medal at World
Championships since 2009 - and belong to the main medal conten-
ders such as the Netherlands, who were finalists in 2015 and in the
EURO 2016, both times defeated by Norway. Besides, Olympic silver
medallists France, 2015 World Championship bronze medallists Ro-
mania and the 2013 World Champions Brazil start their mission at
Germany with the ambition to go for medals. Of course, this is the
