Seit über 15 Jahren wird auf den Frankfurter Medienrechtstagen und in Projekten des Studien- und
Forschungsschwerpunktes Medienrecht der Europa-Universität Viadrina zu unterschiedlichen
Themenstellungen das Spannungsfeld zwischen dem Persönlichkeitsrecht und dem öffentlichen
Interesse diskutiert, das die Reichweite der Presse- und Medienfreiheit in Deutschland und Europa
bestimmt. So waren die rechtlichen Möglichkeiten und Praxis der Aufarbeitung der
Herrschaftsinstrumente totalitärer Systeme insbesondere durch Medien in Europa bereits Thema der 6.
Frankfurter Medienrechtstage 2007, gefolgt von dem Symposium "Verantwortliche beim Namen nennen
- Täter haben ein Gesicht" in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Forschungsverbund SED-Staat der FU Berlin 2009.
Vor dem Hintergrund der rasanten Entwicklung der neuen Medien mit anonym inszenierten
„Shitstorms“, unverändert offenen Fragen der Aufarbeitung des SED-Regimes sowie der europaweiten
Regulierung des Datenschutzes mit weitreichenden Privilegien für Medien und Wissenschaft und
Forschung sollen auf den 16. Frankfurter Medienrechtstagen vom 19. – 21. Juni 2019 unterschiedliche
Aspekte dieses Spannungsfeld zwischen dem allgemeinen Persönlichkeitsrecht und dem öffentlichen
Interesse an der Information über zeitgeschichtliche Entwicklungen und die Hintergründe politischer und
gesellschaftlicher Ereignisse diskutiert werden. |

For more than 15 years the Frankfurt Days on Media Law at the European University Viadrina have
presented and discussed different topics of the aspects of the conflict between personal rights and public
interest that have determined the range of freedom of press and media in Germany and the European
Union. The topic of the 6th Frankfurt Media Law Days 2007 had been the legal opportunities and the
practice of reappraisal of the instruments of power used by totalitarian systems, followed by the
symposium “Naming the ones in charge – offenders do have a face” in cooperation with the
“Forschungsverbund SED-Staat of the Freie Universität Berlin” 2009. Against the backdrop of fast-paced
development of new media along with anonymously orchestrated shitstorms, the remaining
unanswered questions of the reappraisal of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany regime and also the
pan-European regulation of data protection with the extensive privileges for media, science and research
- the aspects of the conflicting area between personal rights and public interest on the information of
contemporary developments and backgrounds of political and social events will be discussed during the
16th Frankfurt Media Law Days on 19th – 21st June 2019.
