Preface to the official programme for the
Lebendige Erfahrung

Lucerne
Living experience
“Each individual case of disease is most surely, radically,
rapidly and permanently annihilated and removed only by a
medicine capable of producing in the most similar and
complete manner the totality of its symptoms.“
Thus wrote the founding father of homoeopathy – medical
practitioner, pharmacist and chemist Dr Samuel Hahne-
mann, who began his medical studies in Leipzig in 1775 and
completed them in Erlangen in 1779. Believing none of the
various approaches to medicine to be practicable, he
devoted his time primarily to studying the possibilities of
drug-free treatment, on the assumption that certain agents
could promote the body’s self-healing properties.
In the course of studying various preparations, the dosages
he used became increasingly smaller as he came to realise
their potency. For many years homoeopathy was not
accorded much credence due to the lack of belief in the
effectiveness of such a small dose of the anima in the
administered medicaments. Nowadays homoeopathy is a
medically recognised treatment within the holistic medicine
spectrum. In Austria, homeopathy can only be practised by
doctors. All homoeopaths receive a scientific “medical-
school“ course of instruction and are entitled to work as
independent medical practitioners. Following their medical
training, all homoeopaths must complete several years of
special theoretical and practical training. On completion of
their basic homoeopathic training, they are awarded the
Chamber of Doctors diploma in homoeopathy.
As Federal Minister of Health and Women and not least on
account of many years of personal experience, I take a highly
positive view of homoeopathy as a system of treatment, and
advocate it as a regulation method wherever processes can
be manipulated i.e. regulated. Homooeopathy cannot
replace what is missing or destroyed. But missing and
destroyed structures always entail defective systems of
regulation which can be influenced homoeopathically.
I therefore welcome the fact that the 61st World Congress
of Homeopathic Doctors “Liga Medicorum Homeopathica
Internationalis“ is to be held in the Culture and Congress
Centre, Lucerne, to coincide with the 150th anniversary of
the Swiss Association of Homoeopathic Doctors.
I support this congress from a sense of inner conviction and
wish the organisers every success and a fruitful congress.
