Die Körperpflege hatte bereits bei den Ägyptern und den Griechen ei-
nen sehr hohen kulturellen Wert. In Badeanlagen wurden die Privile-
gierten gebadet und mit duftenden Ölen gepflegt. Die Römer erweiter-
ten den Brauch in dem sie in Ziegen- und Eselsstutenmilch badeten, in
Schwitzbädern sich massieren und salben ließen. Die Römer waren es
auch, die durch ihre ausgeklügelte Wasserversorgung über die Aquä-
dukte, das Baden und Waschen für eine breitere Bevölkerung möglich
machten. Lange Zeit war Baden und Waschen jedoch vor allem für die
Landbevölkerung eine eher seltenere Angelegenheit. Erst ab dem 20.
Jahrhundert besaßen mehr und mehr Bürger ein privates Bad, indem
eine Waschkommode an fließendes Wasser angeschlossen war und
eine Badewanne aus Porzellan stand. Die Menschen, die kein eigenes
Bad hatten, wuschen sich weiterhin in öffentlichen Volksbädern. Nach
dem Zweiten Weltkrieg und dem damit verbundenen Wiederaufbau
wurden in den Wohnhäusern „Nasszellen“ eingebaut. Ein besonderes
Konzept war das Frankfurter Bad, wobei die Badewanne sich in der Kü-
che oder im Schlafzimmer befand.
In den letzten Jahrzehnten hat sich das Badezimmer mehr und mehr zu
einem integrierten Wohn- und Wellnesskonzept entwickelt. Neben den
funktionalen Elementen wie Dusche, Waschbecken, Badewanne und
Toilette steht in modernen Badezimmer- Konzepten der Wohlfühlas-
pekt mit Sauna, Wasserfall- und Regendusche, Infrarotwärmekabinen
und Jacuzzi im Vordergrund. Das Badezimmer wird zu einem Raum der
Ruhe und Entspannung. Der individuellen Gestaltung sind dabei keine
Grenzen gesetzt.
Die in diesem Buch vorgestellten Badprojekte zeigen eindrucksvoll wie
in unterschiedlichen Designkonzepten die individuellen Wüsche der
Bauherren*innen liebevoll umgesetzt wurden. Lassen Sie sich inspirie-
ren, auch mit einer gewissen Demut und Dankbarkeit. Denn wir dürfen
nicht vergessen, dass es noch viele Menschen auf der Erde gibt, die
keinen oder nur wenig Zugang zu Wasser haben und nur davon träu-
men können, ihren Körper und Geist in einem schönen Badezimmer zu
pflegen und zu entspannen.

Body care already had a very high cultural value among the ancient
Egyptians and Greeks. The privileged had access to exclusive bathing
facilities and were cared for with fragrant oils. The Romans extended
the custom by bathing in goat and donkey mare milk, massaging and
anointing themselves in sweat baths. It was also the Romans who,
thanks to their ingenious water supply via the aqueducts, made bathing
and washing possible for a wider population. For a long time, however,
bathing and washing was a rather rare affair, especially for the rural
population. It was not until the 20th century that more and more citizens
had a private bathroom with a washstand connected to running water
and a porcelain bathtub. Those who did not have their own bathroom
continued to wash in public baths. After the Second World War and
the associated reconstruction, “wet cells” were installed in residential
buildings. The Frankfurt bathroom was a special concept, with the bath-
tub in the kitchen or in the bedroom.
In the last few decades, the bathroom has increasingly developed into
an integrated living and wellness concept. In addition to the functional
elements such as shower, washbasin, bathtub, and toilet, modern bath-
room concepts focus on the feel-good aspect, with saunas, waterfalls
and rain showers, infrared heat cabins, and jacuzzis. The bathroom be-
comes a place of rest and relaxation. There are no limits to the indi-
vidual design.
The bathroom projects presented in this volume impressively show how
the individual wishes of the builders have been lovingly implemented in
various design concepts. Let yourself be inspired, even with a certain
humility and gratitude. Because we must not forget that there are still
many people on earth who have little or no access to water and can only
dream of taking care of their body and mind in a beautiful bathroom.

PENTHOUSE: “THE 360° VIEW”,
WELLNESS-ZONE MIT AUSSICHT
Der Domblick aus der Dusche im 12. Geschoss des Ger-
lingtowers in der Kölner Innenstadt ist einzigartig und
aufregend, erst Recht für einen gebürtigen Kölner. Beim
Entwurf dieses Luxus-Bades stand der Wohlfühl- und
Wellnessfaktor im Fordergrund, weniger das profane Be-
dürfnis der Bewohner nach Körperpflege und Reingung.
Die Ausstattung bietet zwei seperate Regenduschen, eine
Sauna mit Weitblick, einen drei Meter langen Waschtisch
mit Makeup-Table und nicht zuletzt den zentralen Whirl-
pool, gekrönt von einer luftigen Lichtskulptur aus textilen
Blütenblättern. Emotion und Funktion verschmelzen zu ei-
ner perfekten Einheit.

The view of the cathedral from the shower on the 12th floor
of the Gerling Tower in Cologne’s city centre is unique and
exciting, especially for a native. When designing this luxury
bathroom, the focus was on the feel-good and wellness
fact, rather than the residents’ mundane need for personal
hygiene and cleansing. The fittings include two separate
rain showers, a sauna with a far-reaching view, a 3 m. long
washstand with make-up table and the central whirlpool,
crowned by an airy light sculpture made of textile petals.
Emotion and function merge into a perfect unity.
20HOTEL LYO - MYKONOS
Im Hotel Lyo auf Mykonos, positioniert über dem berühm-
testen Strand der Insel: Mykonos Paradise, entdeckt der
geneigte Hotelgast Zimmer und Bad als Einheit aus Woh-
nen und Wellness. Nur die Toilette ist dem neugierigen
Blick entzogen. Waschtisch und Dusche sind Teil des Rau-
mes und erlauben den Blick auf Meer und Himmel.

In Hotel Lyo on Mykonos, positioned above the island’s most
famous beach: Mykonos Paradise, the inclined hotel guest

ness. Only the toilet is hidden from curious eyes. The wash-

PH 56 ist ein Maisonette-Penthouse mit spektakulärem

menten –den Pflanzen und der mit Moos bekleideten Wand
– gefasst.

PH 56 is a maisonette penthouse with spectacular views
of the surrounding landscape from over 40 m above the
ground. The lower level houses the kitchen, dining and liv-
ing areas and the large main terrace. On the upper level, a
gentle ramp leads from the gallery to the portal of the bath-
room space with loggia in front. The back of the entrance
takes the mirrored surface of the closet and closes the
area. Dark porcelain stoneware flooring and dark spackling
on the ceiling provide the framework for the furniture and
zoning of the space. A solid oak block forms the function-
al centre between the freestanding bathtub and the open
shower area. The room is framed by natural elements, the
plants and a moss-covered wall.

Das Grundstück befindet sich seit drei Generationen im
Familienbesitz. Black Forest ist auf den Grundmauern
der elterlichen und großelterlichen Wohnhäuser errich-
tet und bietet nun den Lebensraum für die mittlerweile
dritte und vierte Generation. Das Gebäude zeigt sich auf
der Eingangsseite zur Straße hin geschlossen. Erst nach
Passieren des Gartentors, das sich aus der homogenen
Verkleidung der Garagentore entwickelt, beginnt sich das
Gebäude für die Bewohner und für Besucher sukzessive
zu öffnen. Auf der Gartenebene befindet sich der offene
Elternbereich mit Schlafzimmer, Ankleide und Badezim-
mer. Vom Bad aus öffnet sich der Blick durch die große
Innenverglasung über das Bett Richtung Sonnenaufgang.
Der Raumeinbau aus gebürsteter Eiche nimmt die Wasch-
becken auf und bildet gleichzeitig den Rücken für das el-
terliche Schlafzimmer. Die freistehende Badewanne nimmt
Bezug zum offenen Patio des darüber liegenden Wohnbe-
reichs. Halbtransparente Vorhänge und der naturbelasse-
ne Eichenboden schaffen eine auch akustisch behagliche
und warme Atmosphäre.
BLACK FOREST
The property has been in the family for three generations.
Black Forest is built on the foundation walls of the paren-
tal and grandparental homes and now provides the living
space for the now third and fourth generations. The build-
ing is closed to the street on the entrance side. Only after
passing the garden gate, which develops from the homoge-
neous cladding of the garage doors, does the building begin
to open successively for the residents and for visitors. On
the garden level is the open parents’ area with bedroom,
dressing room and bathroom. From the bathroom, the view
opens up through the large interior glazing over the bed
towards the sunrise. The room’s brushed oak recess ac-
commodates the washbasins and also forms the back for
the parental bedroom. The freestanding bathtub makes
reference to the open patio of the living area above. Semi-
transparent curtains and the natural oak floor create an
atmosphere that is also acoustically cosy and warm.

Mit schräg angeordneten Wänden, verschachtelten Kuben
und versetzten Satteldächern nimmt dieses Haus Bezug
auf die Bauweise der zum Teil jahrhundertealten Häuser
der Umgebung und interpretiert sie neu. Auch mit der Auf-
nahme vorhandener Raumkanten, wie die Einreihung in die
Straßenflucht, sowie mit der Schaffung von Sichtbezügen,
etwa die Ausrichtung von Fenstern auf die nahe gelegene
historische Kirche, werden städtebauliche Verbindungen
hergestellt. Zugleich setzt sich das Haus mit seiner moder-
nen Formensprache ab. Das Architekturkonzept ist einma-
lig, da es sich mit seinen diversen Bezügen nur an diesem
Standort sinnvoll und begründet verwirklichen lässt. Das
Einfamilienhaus besteht aus einem stehenden Element -
mit Schlafzimmern in den oberen Etagen, Abstellräumen
und Gästezimmer - und einem liegenden Element - Küche,
Wohn- und Esszimmer. Besondere Atmosphäre strahlt der
15 Meter lange liegende Kubus aus. Deckenversprünge,
Panoramaverglasung und die stehenden C-Elemente, cha-
rakterisieren diesen Hauptlebensraum. Das komplette Ge-
bäude ist rückwärtig mit dem Blick zur Ems.
QUABBE 1
With diagonally arranged walls, nested cubes and stag-
gered gable roofs, this house refers to and reinterprets the
construction methods of the surrounding houses, some of
which are centuries old. Urban connections are also estab-
lished with the inclusion of existing spatial edges, such as
the alignment with the street, and with the creation of visual
references, such as the orientation of windows towards the
nearby historic church. At the same time, the house sets
itself apart with its modern formal language. The architec-
tural concept is unique because its diverse references can
only be realised sensibly and justifiably at this location. The
single-family house consists of a standing element with
bedrooms on the upper floors, storage rooms and a guest
room, and a lying element: kitchen, living and dining room.
The 15 m long lying cube radiates a special atmosphere.
Ceiling projections, panoramic glazing and the upright C-
elements characterise this main living space. The entire
building is rear-facing with a view of the Ems.

In der Nachbarschaft von Van Gogh soll auch ein Badezim-
mer stilbewusst eingerichtet sein. In dem typischen Ams-
terdamer Grachtenhaus in der Nähe des Reijksmuseums,
wurden die beiden Bäder umfangreich saniert. Die Kombi-
nation des weißen Marmors mit den messingfarbenen Ar-
maturen sind absolut zeitgenössisch und dennoch zeitlos.
Die Realisierung auf solch schmalen Raum schien zu-
nächst eine Herausforderung, die in der Umsetzung har-
monisch gelungen ist und das Raumgefühl vergrößert hat.
Durch gekonnt eingesetzte Leuchten- und Möbelelemente
wurde das Design, trotz der klassisch gewählten Materia-
lien modern interpretiert und entspricht ganz dem Stil und
den Anforderungen des Kunden.
PROJECT AMSTERDAM
In the neighbourhood of Van Gogh, a bathroom should also
be stylishly furnished. In this typical Amsterdam canal
house near the Rijksmuseum, two bathrooms were exten-
sively renovated. The combination of the white marble and
the brass-coloured fittings are unquestionably contempo-
rary and yet timeless.
The construction in such a narrow space seemed a chal-
lenge at first, but the remodelling succeeded harmoniously
creating the feeling of space. Despite the classically chosen
materials, the design has been interpreted in a modern way
through the skillful use of lighting and furniture elements,
and corresponds dividedly to the style and requirements of
the client.

In diesem Badezimmer ist die Philosophie von Atelier No.
63 klar zu erkennen: unkonventionell, harmonisch und
dennoch funktional. Das Designkonzept wird den Anforde-
rungen und der Routine der 4-köpfigen Familie mehr als
gerecht. Das Kunstobjekt des Kunden bekam einen beson-
deren Platz im Badezimmer. Hierdurch erhält der Raum
eine gewisse Spannung, die durch die übrige Geradlinig-
keit des Designs ausbalanciert wird. Neben dem Anblick
des Kunstwerks genießt man von der freistehenden Ba-
dewanne das herrliche Panorama auf die naheliegenden
Weinberge.
PROJECT STUTTGART
In this bathroom, the philosophy of Atelier No. 63 is clearly
visible: unconventional, harmonious and yet functional.
The design concept exceeds the requirements, and com-
pliments the routine of the family of four. The client’s art
object was given a special spot in the bathroom, and gives
the room a certain tension, which is balanced by the re-
maining straight lines of the design. From the freestanding
bathtub, one can appreciate the painting, as well as behold
the panorama of nearby vineyards through the large floor
to ceiling window.

Cyrus Ghanai realisierte im Obergeschoss des Hauses auf
24 Quadratmetern Grundfläche ein harmonisches Raum-
konzept mit Sauna, dreiseitig begehbarer Badewanne mit
großzügiger Liegefläche und integrierten offenen sowie
abgeschlossenen Stauraumfächern, einer großen, be-
gehbaren Dusche mit Sitzfläche und einer individuellen
Waschtischanlage mit in der Wand integriertem Spiegel-
schrank. Bad und WC wurden räumlich separiert.
Analog zur Farbgebung der Fassade nahm Cyrus Ghanai
das Spektrum natürlicher warmer Farbtöne bei der Gestal-
tung des Innenraumes wieder auf – ein Kunstgriff, der für
Harmonie, Weite und Großzügigkeit sorgt.

On the upper floor of the house, Cyrus Ghanai designed a
harmonious room concept on 24 m2 of floor space with a
sauna, a walk-in bathtub on three sides with a generous re-
clining surface and integrated open as well as closed stor-
age compartments, a large walk-in shower with a seat and
an individual washstand with a mirror cabinet integrated
into the wall. The bathroom and WC were spatially sepa-
rated.
Analogous to the colour scheme of the façade, Cyrus Gha-
nai picked up the spectrum of natural warm tones in the
design of the interior, an artifice that creates harmony,
space and generosity.

Aus Pakistan kommt Onyx Verde Smeraldo, ein ausdrucks-
stark marmorierter Stein, der in diesem 28 Quadratmeter
großen, lichtdurchfluteten Bad eine klare Zonierung vor-
nimmt und zugleich elegante Akzente setzt. Der ausdrück-
liche Wunsch des Hausherrn war eine Art Verlängerung
des Wohnraumes: ein großzügiger und wohnlich gestal-
teter Wellnessbereich mit Sauna und geräumiger Ruhe-
fläche, begehbarer Dusche mit Sitzmöglichkeit und einer
großen Wanne, von wo aus er beim morgendlichen Bade
den Blick über die Dächer der Stadt auf die Kirchtürme ge-
nießen kann.
Cyrus Ghanai trug dem Wunsch des Bauherrn mit einem
ästhetischen, ganzheitlichen und offenen Gestaltungskon-
zept Rechnung, was lediglich die räumliche Trennung von
Bad und WC vorsah. Verbindendes Element über alle Zonen
hinweg: ein licht glänzender, weißer Boden aus wasserab-
weisendem, kristallisiertem Glas.
ONYX VERDE SMERALDO
Onyx Verde Smeraldo comes from Pakistan, an expressive-
ly marbled stone that creates a clear zoning in this 28 m2,
light-flooded bathroom and at the same time sets elegant
accents. The owner’s express wish was for a kind of exten-
sion of the living space: a generous and homely wellness
area with sauna and spacious relaxation space, walk-in
shower with seating and a large bathtub from where he can
enjoy the view over the city’s rooftops to the church towers
during his morning bath.
Cyrus Ghanai took the client’s wishes into account with
an aesthetic, holistic and open design concept, which only
envisaged the spatial separation of bathroom and WC. The
unifying element across all zones: a light, shiny white floor
made of water-repellent, crystallised glass.

der the washbasin and a WC cleverly integrated into the

Das denkmalgeschützte Bauernhaus aus dem Jahre 1873,
im Schweizer Berner Seeland stehend, ist mit viel Res-
pekt zum geschichtsträchtigen Bau saniert worden. Da-

traditionellen Bausubstanz zu erhalten. Ergänzt mit einer
zeitgenössischen Materialisierung und Farbgebung wurde
gekonnt eine Verbindung von Tradition und Moderne ge-
schaffen. Im Bad trifft unbehandeltes Holz auf Beton, mi-
neralischen Wand- und Bodenbelag, Metall und Glas. Eine
solitäre Wand mitten im Raum ist nicht nur Ankerpunkt,
sondern verbirgt auch raffiniert die Duschzone und das WC
und sorgt so für einen intimen Bereich. Die Raumstruktur
ist bewusst klar und ruhig gehalten und wird durch die wei-
che, ovale Form von Spiegel, Waschbecken und Badewanne
umspielt. Anthrazitfarbene Armaturen, Leuchtkörper und
Spiegel bringen spannenden Kontrast zum warmgrauen
Wandbelag. Bodenlange Glasfenster sorgen für viel Tages-
licht; die fließenden Leinenvorhänge verhelfen zur nötigen
Privatsphäre im Raum und verleihen ihm zusätzliche Be-
haglichkeit. Die alte Heuleiter wurde liebevoll restauriert
und zum hübschen Badtuchhalter umfunktioniert.
OLD MEETS NEW, A SKILFUL COMBINATION
The listed farmhouse from 1873, located in the Swiss
Bernese Seeland, was renovated with great respect for
the historical building. Great importance was attached to
preserving numerous elements of the traditional building.
Supplemented with contemporary materials and colours, a
combination of tradition and modernity was skilfully creat-
ed. In the bathroom, untreated wood meets concrete, min-
eral wall and floor covering, metal and glass. A solitary wall
in the middle of the room is not only an anchor point, but
also cleverly conceals the shower zone and WC, creating
an intimate area. The room structure is deliberately kept
clear and calm and is played around by the soft, oval shape
of the mirror, washbasin and bathtub. Anthracite-coloured
fittings, light fixtures and mirrors bring exciting contrast to
the warm grey wall covering. Floor-length glass windows
provide plenty of daylight; the flowing linen curtains help
create the necessary privacy in the room and lend it ad-
ditional cosiness. The old hay ladder has been lovingly re-
stored and converted into a pretty bathroom towel rail.
