The above mentioned prices include VATChristof Mascher history crush Opening: June 3, 2016 at 7 pm Exhibition: June 4 – July 30, 2016 We are very happy to announce Christof Mascher‘s return to Cologne. After having shown him in 2006 in a group exhibition, we will inaugurate his first solo history crush on June 3, 2016 at 7 pm – effectively Mascher‘s first solo exhibition in the Rhineland after almost ten years. The words that form the exhibition‘s title, history crush, can each be read in multiple directions and these routes indicate also the way Christof Mascher‘s paintings can be understood. He is alluding to the history of mankind and / or the world: crocodiles, monu- ments, architectures, vehicles, historic figures, and more are the elements that inhabit his pictures. By the way he assembles these elements in / over the pictorial space – the term pasticcio comes to mind –, he is also telling and not telling a story, being a (hi-)story-teller. While he is offering contents that seem as if they could be understood, he is also keeping these contents open. There is no definite history to be clearly read. Whatever can be seen is broken up, remains allusive, associative. Plus: as viewers, the paintings (and likewise the works on paper) allow us to have a crush on them, with their beauty, their refined surfaces, their subtle but also intense coloration, their depicted depth that is – at the same time – neglected (crushed towards the flat picture plane). The crush, in particular in the case of the larger works, can also be seen in the amount of objects strewn over the picture plane, not allowing us to focus on one or two particular situations, but forcing us to understand the entirety of what has been painted as a somewhat chaotic multiplicity of possible meanings. Christof Mascher (born 1979 in Hannover, lives and works in Brunswick), graduated in 2009 at the Brunswick University of Art (with Prof. Walter Dahn). He has had single exhibitions at (amongst other shows) the Kunsthalle Emden, Dusseldorf‘s Kunstverein Malkasten, Goslar‘s Mönchehaus Museum for Modern Art, and at the Galerie der Stadt Remscheidt. Christof Mascher history crush Eröffnung: 3. Juni 2016 um 19 Uhr Ausstellung: 4. Juni–30. Juli 2016 Wir freuen uns sehr, Christof Maschers Rückkehr nach Köln ankündigen zu können. Nachdem wir ihn 2006 in einer Gruppenausstellung gezeigt hatten, eröffnen wir am 3. Juni mit history crush seine erste Einzelausstellung bei uns – tatsächlich Maschers erste Einzelausstellung im Rheinland nach fast zehn Jahren. Die Begriffe, die den Titel der Ausstellung bilden, lassen sich in verschiedenste Richtungen lesen und sie deuten auch darauf hin, wie Christof Maschers Gemälde verstanden werden können. Er spielt auf die Geschichte der Menschheit und / oder der Welt an: Krokodile, Monumente, Architekturen, Fahrzeuge, historisch wirkende Figuren und anderes sind Elemente, die seine Bilder bevölkern. Und durch die Art und Weise in der er diese Elemente in seinem Bildraum und auf der Bildoberfläche verteilt – der aus der Musik kommende Begriff des Pasticcios liegt nahe –, entwickelt er eine Geschichte (und unterläuft diese zugleich), wird also zum Geschichten-Erzähler. Während er uns Inhalte anbietet, die man meint, verstehen zu können, bewahrt er sich gleichzeitig Offenheit. Es gibt keine eindeutig lesbare „story line“, was immer man sieht, bleibt gebrochen, bleibt Anspielung und Assoziation. Und: die Gemälde (wie auch die Arbeiten auf Papier) erlauben dem Betrachter, Begeisterung zu entwickeln („a crush on…“), so schön sind sie, so differenziert sind ihre Oberflächen, so subtil aber auch intensiv ihre Farbigkeit und so interessant ist die gemalte Tiefe, die gleichzeitig in den flachen Bildraum gedrückt („crushed“) ist. Das Gewühl („crush“) kann man vor allem in den großformatigen Werken und den Objekten, die über die Bildfläche verteilt sind, sehen. Sie erlauben uns nicht, uns auf ein oder zwei bestimmte Situationen zu fokussieren, sondern zwingen uns, das Ganze, die Gesamtheit des Gemalten, als eine etwas chaotische Vielheit möglicher Lesarten zu verstehen. Christof Mascher (geboren 1979 in Hannover, lebt und arbeitet in Braunschweig) schloß sein Studium 2009 an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Braunschweig als Meisterschüler von Walter Dahn ab. Er hatte Einzelausstellungen (unter anderem) in der Kunsthalle Emden, im Kunstverein Malkasten in Düsseldorf, in Goslar im Mönchehaus Museum für Moderne Kunst und in der Galerie der Stadt Remscheidt.
