The diversity of the past – coin auction at Felzmann
Auktionshaus Ulrich Felzmann will be offering collectors an impressively diverse range of material
on 3 and 4 March 2020. From antiquity to the present day, coins, medallions and banknotes will be
going under the hammer at the 168th International Felzmann Auction.

The 168th Felzmann auction will be featuring a whole host of high-quality numismatics, kicking off
with a series of almost 90 lots of Greek coins. Among these are numerous tetradrachms, including
from Messana (Lot 26) and a gold Alexander the Great stater (Lot 35).

Roman Empire enthusiasts will have well over 100 mintages to choose from, beginning with the
didrachm minted from the contribution payments after the Punic War, up until the end of the
Republic with a Roscius Fabatus denarius (Lot 125) and a Caesar denarius (Lot 131). The Diocletian
aureus (Lot 243) marks the end of classical Rome and the beginning of the Dominate.

The Germany section of the auction begins with a silver cast medallion from Anhalt, a metal variant
that was even missing from Heinz Thormann’s famous collection (Lot 325). “Gross-Gold” devotees
can look forward to getting acquainted with a rare gold Portugal Löser for 10 ducats from Hamburg
(Lot 366).

The high-calibre material continues with a peerless range of rare German Empire coins, including: the
one-pfennig 1877 B with Paproth appraisal, the rare 10-pfennig war token 1918 D, 50 Rentenpfennig
1923 J (only 4,000 specimens minted), 5 Reichsmark 1932 Goethe, 5 Reichsmark Eichbaum 1933 J.
(Lot 501, Lot 690, Lot 692, Lot 761, Lot 740).

The auction is also well represented on the international front. Collectors looking for their place in
the sun are sure to be taken with the 15-rupee German-East Africa and the 20 New Guinea mark
coins (Lot 785 and Lot 778). And what better way to start an unusual collection field than with a
series of small coins up to and including a Monaco ecu from the 17th and 18th century? Some of the
coins are available in near-superb quality (Lot 966). A selection of Chinese coins allows collectors to
follow in Marco Polo’s footsteps, calling to mind the fascination with the great discoverer. For
instance, they can acquire a rare 100 yuan “Year of Peace” gold coin from 1986 or a complete set of
all five 100 yuan coins from the “Coins of Invention and Discovery” series in 1992. (Lot 1410, Lot
1427). Finally, there is an extremely interesting range of medals and a currency collection being
wound up with a specimen issue from the Belgian Congo from 1929 (Lot 1652).

With so much to choose from, there is sure to be something for everyone in the catalogue. After all,
the wide range of numismatic material on display is a pleasure in itself and allows us to get a sense of
times long gone.
