The Choral Collection Psalms contains over 50 settings for
mixed unaccompanied choir from six centuries. It is a true
treasure-trove of compositions in various styles and levels of
difficulty: with some unknown new discoveries and some clas-
sics of the choral literature, the selection will enrich both wor-
ship and concerts.
The 150 psalms of the Old Testament express rejoicing, joy,
confidence, but also lament, grief, anger, and even doubt. The
psalms are present throughout Christianity and Judaism to this
day, and are sung worldwide in countless settings. The Choral
Collection Psalms displays the whole stylistic and linguistic vari-
ety ranging from contemplative, simple “Anglican chant”
through Russian Orthodox homophony to virtuoso motets with
jazzy echoes.
The linguistic spectrum is equally broad: English, French, Ger-
man (some with added singable English translation), Estonian,
Icelandic and, of course, Latin psalm settings are represented, as
well as works in Church Slavonic and Hebrew (both accompa-
nied by transliterations and a singable German text). The fore-
word (German / English) offers many hints regarding the per-
formance of the psalm settings, and a detailed index will help
with choosing appropriate pieces for the liturgical occasion ac-
cording to the Anglican, Protestant, or Catholic calendar.
Over the last ten years editor Stefan Schuck has performed two
psalm compositions every week in his NoonSong series in Berlin.
From the resulting 800 works, he has selected the most inter-
esting compositions arranged according to level of difficulty.
The choral director’s volume includes a CD with recordings of
selected works, sung by sirventes and conducted by the editor,
which will help with learning and rehearsing the repertoire.

In his Passion oratorio The Mount of Olives, Beethoven suc-
ceeded firstly in building on the 18th century tradition of pas-
sion compositions, and secondly in putting his own personal
stamp on the burgeoning genre of German-language oratorio
– the Vienna performances of Haydn’s Die Schöpfung and Die
Jahreszeiten had only taken place a few years earlier. In com-
posing the work he looked towards contemporary opera to de-
pict in music the dramatic situation of the doubting Jesus in the
Garden of Gethsemane and his arrest.
Yet we do not do justice to Beethoven’s work if we simply regard
it as a successor work to Graun’s Der Tod Jesu or even Bach’s
St. Matthew Passion. Beethoven’s Christus am Ölberge is char-
acterized less by religious devotion and much more by the dra-
matic realization of a specific situation in the Passion story in
deeply-felt musical scenes. With its magnificent, almost operat-
ic music, this is a different Passion oratorio which is definitely
worth hearing and experiencing – and in this form it is without
doubt unique in the history of vocal-instrumental sacred music.
The edition follows the first printed edition in music and text;
differences in the text in the libretto originally set by Beethoven
are given as a second text, and a singable English translation is
underlaid.

The Peasant Cantata BWV 212 is unique in Bach’s cantata out-
put both in content and musically. Although it belongs to Bach’s
homage cantatas, the text deals only indirectly with praise for a
new chamberlain. Rather, the eloquent characters portray situ-
ations from rural life, which are also reflected in the music: Bach
often drew on well-known dance movements and folk tunes.
Because of this the cantata as a whole seems less “academic”
than his (surviving) sacred vocal music. Just two arias were
composed in the typical da capo structure in which the musi-
cians’ abilities are put to the test. But because of the shortness
of the other movements, the cantata is extremely varied. Pican-
der’s humorous text makes the cantata extremely versatile, far
beyond its original purpose.

Handel’s Utrecht Te Deum HWV 278 enthralled London audi-
ences right from its first performance, and it continues to do so
today in concert halls and churches all over the world. It was
performed for the first time in a festive service on 13 July 1713
in St. Paul’s Cathedral to celebrate the Peace marking the end of
the twelve year-long War of the Spanish Succession in 1713. The
Te Deum was the first commission by the English royal house
and was also Handel’s first sacred work in the English language.
For Handel the Utrecht Te Deum was an important milestone at
the beginning of his London career. The composition brought
him an annual pension from Queen Anne and helped him to
establish himself as a composer of prestigious music for the En-
glish royal family. Four further settings of the Ambrosian hymn
of praise by Handel followed, including the equally popular Det-
tingen Te Deum (Carus 55.238). The six soloists required can in
practice be reduced to four, and the Te Deum does not contain
any stand-alone arias. The chorus is scored in five parts in a few
movements (SSATB), with the concluding doxology beginning
in double-choir scoring (SST/AATB). For this frequently-per-
formed work Carus offers a musical text reflecting the latest
scholarly discoveries. The Critical Report contains information
on all the important facts about the work in a practicable, com-
pact form. A detailed foreword offers insights into the creation
of the work and its reception.

Goethe’s dramatic ballad The First Walpurgis Night inspired
Mendelssohn to write a magnificent and vivid portrayal of the
conflict between an old heathen community and the new aspi-
rations of Christianization, between belief and superstition on
both sides. In 1833 Mendelssohn had his ballad premiered, but
he decided to make far-reaching revisions before he finally had
the work published in 1844. The Carus edition by the leading
Mendelssohn scholar R. Larry Todd is based on the first printed
edition of the score and thus the last authentic version of the
work. This important choral work by Mendelssohn is now avail-
able in a modern Urtext edition, with full score (in two languag-
es), vocal score, choral score and orchestral material available
on sale, as well as a CD recording by the Kammerchor Stuttgart
conducted by Frieder Bernius (planned for autumn 2019).

Amilcare Ponchielli is known nowadays mainly as an opera com-
poser and the composition teacher of Giacomo Puccini and Piet-
ro Mascagni. He scored his greatest success in 1876 at La Scala
Milan with the opera La Gioconda, a work which is still in the
repertoire of the major opera houses. Ponchielli’s sacred works
were composed in his later years, when he was maestro di cap-
pella at the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo. There
his Mass in A flat op. 20 (also known as “Messa per la notte di
natale”) was premiered on Christmas Day 1882. The Mass is
captivating because of its flowing, singable melodies, rich har-
monies, and warm tonal colors. The important role given to the
chorus, with which the three male soloists interact closely, is
striking. The first music edition of the Messa is a real discovery
for choirs with good male voices; the second tenor part can
largely be sung by the baritones.
