Cari amici del tennis,
il tennis in Val Gardena e il Tennis Club di Ortisei hanno una lunga tradizione e molti
sostenitori appassionati. La Val Gardena non si è fatta un nome solo grazie alla coppa del
mondo di sci, ma anche sulla scena tennistica internazionale.
L‘edizione diquest‘anno sarà molto diversa da quella degli ultimi 20 anni a causa della
situazione eccezionale che stiamo vivendo. Ciò nonostantesaranno presenti moltissimi
atleti professionisti della massima caratura. Con Jannik Sinner vediamo un altoatesino
scendere in campo sulla scena internazionale. Le partite da lui disputate quest‘anno non
hanno suscitato solo una grande risonanza mediatica, ma anche raccolto le lodi di giganti
assoluti della disciplina come Boris Becker.
Il suo esordio nell‘edizione di quest‘anno degli ATP in Val Gardena illuminerà ancora di più
Arno Kompatscher l‘intera manifestazione. Auguro a tutti i giocatori di raggiungere i propri obiettivi nelle
Presidente della Provincia giornate del torneo in Val Gardena, agli organizzatori buon lavoro nonostante le complesse

Alljährlich findet in Runggaditsch - im Tenniscenter von St. Ulrich das renommierte
Herrenturnier statt. Der Einzug des Tennissportes im Grödnertal ist eine Bereicherung für
die Menschen.
Vereine übernehmen wichtige gesellschaftliche Aufgaben. Beispielsweise wird durch
Vereinsaktivität das soziale Miteinander gefördert und ein Rahmen zur persönlichen
Entfaltung des Einzelnen gegeben. Vereine sind mit einer Familienstruktur vergleichbar,
die insbesondere für die Entwicklung von jungen Individuen von großer Bedeutung ist.
Sportvereine im Speziellen haben eine Integrations-, Unterhaltungs- und soziale Funktion
inne.
Das Challenger „Sparkasse Val Gardena Südtirol“ bietet sowohl Weltklassespielern als
auch einheimischen Spielern eine Bühne. Neben Tennisprofi Andreas Seppi war auch
Tennisjungstar Jannik Sinner bereits auf dem Feld. Auch die heurigen Teilnehmer werden
Vallazza Manfred wiederum mit Spannung erwartet. Der Tennisclub ist ein Erfolgsmodell mit Geschichte, das
Regionalassessor auf viel Engagement basiert.

And yet, two South Tyroleans have made it: Andreas Seppi and Jannik Sinner. Considering the size of the province of South Tyrol, boasting two world-class players is nothing short of a miracle. Let us crunch some numbers: there are 87 million tennis players across 197 countries. Two thousand professional players have scored at least one ATP point, gaining entry into the world ranking. Andreas Seppi has been in the top 100 for over 15 years, peaking on 28th January 2013 when he reached the world ranking of number 18. The 36-year-old from Caldaro won three ATP titles on three different surfaces and nine Challenger tournaments in his career, including two consecutive wins at the Sparkasse Challenger Val Gardena Südtirol in 2013 and 2014, making him the first player to boast consecutive victories. He lives in Ortisei with his wife Michela and their daughter Liv, who was born on 20th February 2020 – and back in 2012 he also bagged a final at his home tournament. Speaking of impressive numbers, before COVID-19, he played in an astounding 59 consecutive Grand Slams. He hasn’t missed any of the four Grand Slams since the 2005 French Open when he lost in the last round of the qualifying draw. Seppi boasts numerous records in Italian tennis (15 consecutive entries in the top 100 at the end of the year, to quote but one) and has played 382 major tournaments since his debut in Kitzbühel back in 2003. In this ranking, he is the proud holder of an all-time seventh ranking. Andreas, after 18 seasons on the ATP circuit, has no intention of hanging up his racket. He has found new stimuli and the will to go on until his health and his world ranking allow him to. Only three years ago, nobody could have even imagined the rise of a new Seppi in South Tyrol: another player who could reach the top. Indeed, the only other local player to reach the top 250 was Florian Allgäuer, born in 1979 in Brunico, winner of the prestigious Bonfiglio in 1997. The player from the Val Pusteria reached number 216 in the ATP world ranking. Our province has now found Seppi’s heir – to the extent that at the start of the year, even before lockdown, this rising international tennis star even went as far as overtaking him in terms of rankings. Jannik Sinner turned 19 on 16th August and before his final match at the M15 in Santa Cristina, in August two years ago, his was a name only known to true tennis aficionados. Today, Sinner has taken the world by storm, a ‘favourite’ who has ticked all the boxes to the point of his surprising three Challenger tournament wins in 2019 (Bergamo, Lexington, Ortisei) and two ITF tournaments (Trento and Santa Margherita di Pula). He won his first ATP match last April in Budapest and his first Masters 1000 match at the Foro Italico in Rome just a few weeks later. He qualified for the first time for a Grand Slam match at the US Open in New York, fighting a tough match against Stan Wawrinka. After the quarterfinals in Antwerp (winning against Gael Monfils, ATP world ranking number 13) and the quarterfinals in Vienna, he accessed the world top 100 ranking for the first time. 2019 was a truly magical year and he ended it with a bang, winning the Next Gen ATP Finals (defeating Alex De Minaur in the final) in Milan, followed the next week by his home victory surrounded by snow in Ortisei in mid-November. It was the pandemic that threw a spanner in Sinner’s works in 2020, but many of the past stars (John McEnroe, Goran Ivanisevic) and today’s big names (Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic) are convinced the youngest player in the top 100 still has a lot to show us. Only time will tell how far this young player from Sesto in the Val Pusteria will go.
