• Die Verweise erfolgen nicht in den Fußnoten, sondern innerhalb des laufenden Textes
nach der Autor-Jahr-Konvention
• Grundsatz: jedes Zitat muss mit Hilfe des Literaturverzeichnisses nachprüfbar sein
• Verwendete, aber nicht explizit kenntlich gemachte Quellen können zu einer negativen
Beurteilung führen (und ggf. zum Nicht-Bestehen!)
• Bei indirekten Zitaten werden keine Anführungszeichen verwendet; sprachlich wird kenntlich
gemacht, dass hier fremde Gedanken wiedergegeben werden.

• Plattformmärkte oder zweiseitige Märkte sind allgegenwärtig, sei es Uber, Amazon, LinkedIn oder auch
Supermärkte bzw. Fernsender. Eine der zentralen Frage dabei ist, wie man solche Märkte
ausgestaltet, etwa mit Blick auf Attraktivität und die Anziehung der verschiedenen Marktseiten. Die

Bankenwettbewerb und Finanzstabilität
• Bankenwettbewerb und Finanzstabilität: Der Zusammenhang zwischen Wettbewerb im Bankensektor
und Finanzstabilität ist intensiv diskutiert, da dies nicht nur ein zentrales Thema in einer Ökonomie ist,
sondern auch empirisch ungeklärt. Im Rahmen der Arbeit soll der Frage nachgegangen werden, ob
mehr oder weniger Wettbewerb im Bankensektor zu mehr Finanzstabilität führt. Dies soll auf der Basis
industrieökonomischer Modelle aber auch empirischer Evidenz diskutiert werden.

The intra-industry effects of leverage buyouts
• The leveraged buyout (LBO) industry has grown dramatically since the late 1980s. The colossal buyout
boom of the mid-2000s and its subsequent catastrophic crash in 2008 remain an essential issue in the
international policy debate. In a typical LBO, the Private Equity fund (usually referred to as buyout fund)
takes control of the company in a transaction financed predominantly by funds borrowed against the
target’s assets and cash flows. A growing strand of literature has shed light on the performance of
target firms yet neglected the impact of such investments on the broader industry.
• The general task of the Bachelor thesis is to provide a comprehensive theoretical and empirical
literature overview of potential economic consequences of buyout transactions on the target’s industry
rivals and the industry’s structure and competition. An empirical analysis (in Stata or R) is also
welcome.

Value Creation in Private Equity: The case of innovation
• The growth of the private equity (PE) industry in the last two decades has been extraordinary. Private
equity (PE) comprises equity held in enterprises that are not publicly traded, which includes early-stage
"classic" venture capital (VC), expansion-stage and later-stage investments in management buyouts
and buy-ins (Wright and Robbie 1998). Various studies demonstrate that PE-backed companies are
associated with better outcomes than their peers concerning numerous metrics such as operating
performance, sales, employment, etc. Nevertheless, the impacts on innovation and the precise
mechanisms behind value creation have usually been neglected.
• The Bachelor thesis is designed as a literature review; however, ideas about how empirical tests
should be conducted (in Stata or R) are welcome. Examples of crucial questions to be answered are:
Do PE investors implement top-down restructuring activities to foster innovation at their PCs? Which
decisions do these investors actively affect innovation strategy? Do social network structures play a
role in the innovation performance of PCs?

The Impact of AIFMD on Private Equity
• The Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive ("AIFMD") presents a slew of principles that are
expected to transform the alternative funds industry, owing to their scope and reach. Private equity
(PE) firms, being a subset of the alternative funds industry, are also impacted affected by the AIFMD.
• For many fund managers, the Directive has entailed substantial changes that have permeated every
aspect of their business. Such changes are increased capital requirements, stricter implementation
of business rules, amendments to remuneration policies, and enhanced disclosures to regulators,
investors, and the general public.
• In the first part of this thesis, the student should summarize the structure, characteristics, and risks of
private equity funds and specific regulatory provisions aimed at this asset class. Next, the student
should create a comprehensive overview of the AIFM Directive and its main requirements. In the
second part, the student should empirically investigate PE funds' reaction to the Directive and real
impacts for the funds and their portfolio company.

ESG Investing in Private Equity
• Environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) has been reshaping the public markets for
years. Private equity (PE) firms also are increasingly engaged with these matters in recent years.
Pension funds and institutional investors who pour billions of dollars into the private equity industry
every year are on the lookout for high returns. However, they are becoming selective about the uses of
their money and are unwilling to invest in PE firms that cannot provide precise guarantees. As a result,
PE firms are pushed to gradually integrate ESG factors into the procedure of evaluating potential deals,
managing their existing portfolio companies, and preparing for an ultimate exit.
• In the first part of this thesis, the student should summarize the drivers of ESG investing in PE. Next,
the student should create a comprehensive overview of various approaches to ESG integration, such
as risk management and value creation. Besides, they investigate ESG efforts of PE funds translate to
changes in corporate governance at PE-backed firms. In the second part, the student should
empirically assess the question of causality of ESG and evaluate the impact of the various ESG
transmission channels on the financial performance of PE funds and their portfolio companies.

Die Universität als Erfinder
• Universitäten weltweit engagieren sich in Forschung und Entwicklung neuer Erfindungen, welche im
Anschluss häufig patentiert werden. Allerdings entstehen hierbei mehrere Herausforderungen.
• Erstens befinden sich Forscher gegebenenfalls in einem Zwiespalt zwischen Grundlagenforschung
und der kommerziellen Verwertung der Erfindungen. Zweitens bildet das Patent als Schutzrecht über
die entsprechende Erfindung den genauen Gegensatz zum Anspruch universitärer Forschung Wissen
frei zugänglich zu machen. Drittens stellt sich die für das Patent konstitutive Frage klarer
Eigentumsverhältnisse der Erfindung im universitären Kontext im besonderen Maße. Häufig entstehen
universitäre Erfindungen im Zusammenspiel von der Institution Universität auf der einen Seite und der
häufig gemeinsam erbrachten Leistung von einem Forscherteam auf der anderen Seite.
• Die Aufgabe der Bachelorarbeit ist es, einen umfassenden Literaturüberblick über die ökonomischen
Implikationen von Innovation im universitären Kontext zu erstellen.

Venture Debt: Start-up Finanzierung durch Fremdkapital
• Für den Erfolg von jungen innovativen Firmen ist eine adäquate Finanzierung eine wichtige
Grundvoraussetzung.
• Hierbei stellt die Finanzierung über eine Eigenkapital (Private Equity) eine zentrale Strategie dar.
Allerdings ist den letzten Jahren auch die Finanzierung von Start-ups über Fremdkapital (Venture
Lending) mehr in den Fokus gerückt. Ein Vorteil von Venture Lending ist unter anderem,
dass Eigentümer im Finanzierungsprozess keine Firmenanteile an Kapitalgeber abgeben müssen (vgl.
mit Private Equity). Da es jungen Unternehmen häufig an geeigneten Möglichkeiten mangelt Kredit mit
Sachanlagen ausreichend zu besichern, werden vermehrt geistige Eigentumsrechte zur Besicherung
herangezogen.
• Die Aufgabe der Bachelorarbeit ist es, einen umfassenden Literaturüberblick über die ökonomischen
Implikationen der Fremdkapital Finanzierung von jungen innovativen Unternehmen zu erarbeiten.

Ist das Patentsystem effektiv darin Wissen offenzulegen?
• Einem Patentsystem kommen zwei zentrale Aufgaben zu. Zum einen soll Erfindern und Unternehmen
durch die Vergabe von Monopolrechten ein Anreiz gesetzt werden innovativ zu sein. Zum anderen soll
durch die Offenlegung des Wissens, welcher der patentierten Erfindung zugrunde liegt, der gesamten
Gesellschaft ein Zugang zu diesem Wissen ermöglicht werden.
• Diese Abschlussarbeit soll sich mit dem letzteren Punkt intensiv auseinandersetzen. In der
Forschungsliteratur herrscht Uneinigkeit darüber, ob bestehende Patentsysteme in der Lage sind diese
zweite Aufgabe zufriedenstellend zu erfüllen.
• Die Aufgabe der Bachelorarbeit ist es, einen umfassenden Literaturüberblick zu erstellen, in welcher
beide Positionen ausgiebig diskutiert werden. Abschließend soll zudem ein eigener Standpunkt
basierend auf der erarbeitenden Literatur dargelegt werden sowie Reformvorschläge formuliert
werden.

• Neue Innovationen entstehen nicht im luftlehren Raum, sondern basieren vielmehr auf kreativen
Erweiterungen und/oder neuartigen Kombinationen von etabliertem Know-How.
• Der Zugang zu diesem bestehenden Wissen sollte demnach eine zentrale Rolle in der Innovationskraft
von Unternehmen spielen. Zwei Quellen von Wissen wurden hierbei von der neuen Literatur als

Does geographic isolation affect individual political attitudes and preferences?

of an individual's home.

The paradigm of stars: which results are shown and published in economics?
• The replication crisis is a phenomenon across many disciplines of science relying on data analysis,
e.g., medicine, psychology, and social sciences.
• Camerer et al. (2016) show that results from lab experiments in economics were not replicated in 40%
of cases. And if results were replicated, effect size was on average smaller than in the original study.
• One reason is publication bias: empirical results showing large effects are more likely to be published

Identifying causal effects using regression discontinuity designs
Regression discontinuity is a popular quasi-experimental research design that allows to measure causal
effects. The basic idea is that individuals in the proximity of some threshold are very similar and differ only in
that some receive a treatment and some do not, enabling the researcher to measure the causal effect of the

Sociologists have long dealt with the concept of social capital. Loosely speaking, an individual’s social
capital describes his or her embeddedness in groups and social networks and allows the individual to
secure certain benefits (Sobel 2002). More recently, the concept of social capital has also been applied in
the work of economists.
In this Bachelor’s thesis, you will try to explain what social capital is and how it can be understood from an
economic point of view. Furthermore, you will summarize how social capital can be measured. Finally, you
will provide examples of how the concept of social capital has been used in economic research.

The Effects of Natural Disasters
Natural disasters such as the severe flooding in Western Germany and other European countries in July 2021 can have disastrous
consequences for local communities and the society on the whole. Besides the more direct consequences such as personal injuries,
fatalities, or the destruction of capital assets and infrastructure, there can be more indirect economic, social, and political effects.
Economists have used the exogenous nature of natural disasters to measure such indirect effect, looking, among others, on
changes in economic development, voting behavior, and social capital.
In this Bachelor’s thesis, you will summarize some of the empirical studies on the economic, social, and political consequences of
natural disasters. You will describe the econometric strategies pursued in these studies and put them into a larger context. In doing
so, you can provide a rather broad review of different effects that natural disasters may have or you can focus on a particular area,
such as the effects of extreme weather events or the effects of natural disasters on voting.

Performance Measurement in Organizations: Theory and Empirical Evidence
• Performance measurement is important for decision-making in organizations covering several aspects
such as compensation or promotion. However, how to measure performance and how rewards should
be based on them, is an issue to investigate. In this thesis, you should first outline the theoretical
foundation (i.e., the optimal contract) of one organizational element. Afterwards, provide evidence how
these questions are empirically assessed by critically evaluating the existing literature. Furthermore,
elaborate on the advantages and drawbacks of objective and subjective performance measures and

• Falk et al. (2018) construct a global data set on social, time, and risk preferences and look at drivers of heterogeneity
of behavior across (but also within) countries.
• Using a short literature review motivate a hypothesis on an outcome of your choice (for which data are available) and
explore how much of the outcome can be explained by the above-mentioned preferences (first check the literature
what has been done already).
• Example: if you want to look at the role of social preferences in the domain of climate change, you can look at various
outcomes, ranging from voting behavior in climate policies to incorporating satellite images on deforestation in
communal forests (either within or across different countries).

Sensitivity of Behavioral Trust Measurements in the Field
• Measuring behavioral preferences and beliefs allows us to better understand why people behave the way do behave,
e.g., the reasons for (not) wearing masks in times of Covid-19 (preferences vs. information, …).
• One particularly important dimension is ”trust”, i.e., how much people trust each other (but also how much trust
people have in institutions).
• However, the way these measurements are implemented varies from paper to paper, thereby greatly impacting the
ability to compare results across different publications.
• Review the literature on trust games outside the laboratory (i.e., ”in the field”) and summarize the extent of variation
in experimental procedures. This can be compared to findings of an existing meta-analysis to learn more about how
different procedures matter for the extent of trust documented in the field and whether trust explains other “real world
outcomes” in the field.

Trust: How and What to Measure (in the field)?
• Measuring behavioral preferences and beliefs allows us to better understand why people behave the way do behave, e.g., are
acts of helping motivated by an inherent preference or a strategic incentive to earn favor for the future.
• This is particularly true for “trust in other people” which has been shown to correlate with various outcomes, ranging from
overall growth to the efficiency of risk-sharing networks.
• However, the literature on how to measure trust is very dispersed. Provide an overview on different measures of trust, ranging
from survey questions to lab-in-the-field experiments (trust game and others – feel free to ”think outside the box”), and
document how different trust measures correlate with each other and with “real world outcomes” in the field.
