along the Customer Journey»
Speakers:     Prof. Dr. Thomas Rudolph, Dr. Kristina Kleinlercher (University of St.Gallen);
requested guest speakers: experts from Alibaba, Douglas, DPD and Engelhorn Sports

Companies' ability to offer customers a seamless and unique customer experience is becoming
more and more important. This research workshop is dedicated to managing customer experiences
effectively – a topic which has increasingly shaped marketing practice.

The questions that we and our guest speakers address include:

        • How do consumers use different touchpoints and how has the Corona Pandemic changed the
customer journey in different retail sectors?
        • How does the customer experience along the customer journey impact the overall shopping
experience, the conversion rate, and customer loyalty across different segments?
        • How do customer characteristics, touchpoint attributes, and forms of communication impact the
customer experience along the customer journey?
        • What characterizes a good customer experience management? What lessons can be learnt from
          best-practice examples?

In this workshop, we will share with you the latest findings on the importance of different
touchpoints along the customer journey for experience management. Among other things, this
longitudinal study conducted with 3000 consumers from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland gives
insights into the sequence of relevant touchpoints along the customer journey, describes the
perceived customer experience at each of these touchpoints, and assesses the most popular omni-
and cross-channel retailers in various retailing sectors.

This workshop is especially relevant for managers with responsibilities in marketing,
communications, channel management, and customer relationship management.

Research Workshop: «Behavioral Pricing and
Neuromarketing in Retailing»
Speakers: Dr. Marc Linzmajer (University of St.Gallen), Gianluca Scheidegger (University of St.Gallen)
Company Representatives (requested) from Coop, IBM, and pricenow

The Internet provides (online) retailers with a wide range of user data. However, bringing together
this user data with insights from behavioural pricing research poses a big challenge. In this
research workshop, we aim to discuss how retailers’ price promotions impact consumer
perception. Taking this as a point of departure, we will outline and discuss the added value of
selected pricing strategies. Furthermore, this research workshop will be dedicated to the question
how market research methods may contribute to explaining consumer behaviour. We will discuss
        the following questions with you:

        How can retailers…
        • … observe and measure the price competition in their industry?
        • … improve their price and sales promotion strategies?
        • … convincingly communicate their price and sales promotions?
        • … assess the profitability of new market research methods from the point of neuromarketing?

We will present two trends, which will challenge the retailing industry in the future: Behavioural
pricing and neuromarketing. By drawing on hands-on examples from the industry, our guest
speaker will highlight how these trends have already been implemented in practice. The ideal
participants are managers with responsibilities in marketing, communications, pricing, market
        research, and corporate development.

Research Workshop: «Sustainability in Retailing: How can
retailers boost sustainable consumption?»
Speakers: Guest speakers from IKEA, Migros, Too Good To Go, and Max Havelaar were
requested. Academic speakers: n.N.; Prof. Dr. Thomas Rudolph

Sustainability has recently gained importance – not only for policy makers, but also for consumers
and retailers. Fridays for Future, the European Coalition for Corporate Justice, and the increasing
popularity of green parties in Switzerland are just a few examples that underpin this trend. At the
same time, consumers have increasingly becoming aware of the benefits of sustainable products or
        sustainable packaging materials.

Sustainability reports, organically grown products and many sustainability initiatives have already
reached the retailing industry. But how can sustainability issues be used even more effectively to
develop a stronger corporate image? To stimulate sustainable consumer behaviour, one promising
strategy may be based on customer inspiration. This research workshop discusses insights from
current research, presents best practice examples, and fosters the idea exchange between other
practitioners. Among other things, we address the following questions:

        • How strong is customers' need for sustainable products?
        • Do retailers need to take more responsibility for sustainable consumption?
        • What measures can be implemented to address the megatrend of sustainability as a strategic
          competitive advantage?
        • How can retailers inspire customers to buy more sustainable products?

The ideal participants are managers with responsibilities in marketing, communications,
        sustainability managers, and corporate development.

Research Workshop: «Potentiale aus Internetnutzung,
Social Commerce und Einkaufstourismus»
Referenten: Folgende Unternehmen wurden angefragt: Amazon, Alibaba, Brack & Zalando. Wissenschaftliche
Leitung: Prof. Dr. Thomas Rudolph (Universität St.Gallen)

       .

Chinesische
Anbieter bieten viele Erfolgsgeschichten. Aber auch der Online-Einkaufstourismus erfährt einen
           starken Boom.

Singles’ Day Summit: «Implications from Prime Day,
Singles’ Day, Black Friday and other Shopping Events on
Retailing»
Speakers: Terry von Bibra (former Head of Europe Alibaba), Prof. Dr. Thomas Rudolph (University of
St.Gallen). Several company representatives were requested and are announced soon.

Black Friday has become an established feature of the retail calendar, not only in the US and China, but also
in Europe. Indeed, Black Friday has traditionally heralded the Christmas shopping season. Many customers
pla ahead for Black Friday Deals, preparing themselves for the best deals or curating their shopping lists.
Retailers often claim that the incredible traffic and sales from this singular day was when books moved "into
        the black".

However, the rapid growth of online shopping, as well as online shopping events such as Cyber Monday,
Singles’ Day or Prime Day, have slowed down the impact of the traditional brick-and-mortar Black Friday in-
store event. As a consequence, a considerable amount of Black Friday spending shifted into online shopping
events, as e-commerce platforms could now target consumers much more accurate. The higher convenience
in online shopping means that the old Black Friday model of making shoppers physically wait outside in the
cold for stores to open, and then often have them literally fight for offered merchandise has increasingly
become less desirable. Thus, it is no big surprise that Alibaba’s Singles’ Day has quickly become the biggest
online shopping event in the world.

In this Webinar, a leading expert, Terry von Bibra, former Head of Europe from Alibaba, introduces the
relevance and mechanisms of Alibaba’s Singles’ Day and how he expects future development in Western-
Europe. Furthermore, Prof. Dr. Thomas Rudolph, Director of the Institute of Retail Management, discusses
with renowned experts from both e-commerce and brick-and-mortar retailers their assessments and
experiences of the implications and trends regarding shopping events like Black Friday, Singles’ Day or
        Prime Day.

We will discuss the following questions in this webinar:
           • What are the implications from Singles’ Day, Black Friday and other shopping events for retailers?
           • How have customer behaviour and customer needs changed in recent years?
           • What companies benefit most from shopping events like Black Friday or Singles’ Day?

In addition, viewers may submit their questions in advance so that they can included into the discussion.
