NEUES LOGO
Seit 1. Oktober 2019 tritt die Medizinische Uni-
versität Graz mit einem neuen Logo auf und
passt sich damit auch optisch der dynamischen
Entwicklung an. Eine stilisierte Äskulapnatter
in zwei frischen Grüntönen symbolisiert dabei
die Medizin und stellt mit der grünen Farbge-
bung den Bezug zum bisherigen Außenauftritt
seit der Gründung der Med Uni Graz und zum
Wissenschaftsstandort Steiermark her. Mit
dem neuen Logo haben wir der dynamischen
Entwicklung der Med Uni Graz nun auch ein
neues Gesicht im Außenauftritt verliehen,
freut sich Rektor Hellmut Samonigg.
NEW LOGO
The Medical University of Graz adopted a new logo on 1 October
2019, making a visual adjustment to its dynamic development. A
stylized Aesculapian snake in two bright shades of green symbol-
izes medicine. Its colours represent the connection to both the im-
age and logo of Med Uni Graz in use since its founding as well as to
Styria as a location for research. Rector professor Hellmut Samo-
nigg finds that the new logo has given a new face to the dynamic
development of Med Uni Graz.

August 2019 saw the raising of the first section of the

WIEDERWAHL REKTOR HELLMUT SAMONIGG
Der amtierende Rektor der Medizinischen Universität Graz, Univ.-Prof. Dr.
Hellmut Samonigg, wurde für eine weitere Funktionsperiode gemäß §23b
Abs. 1 UG ohne Ausschreibung wiederbestellt. Die zweite Funktionsperiode
beginnt am 15. Februar 2020 und läuft bis zum 14. Februar 2024. Mit sein-
er Wiederbestellung sehen die beiden Gremien Senat und Universitätsrat

der Universität. So fallen u.a. zahlreiche Berufungen, eine institutionelle

HELLMUT SAMONIGG
The current rector of the Medical University of Graz, Professor
Hellmut Samonigg, was reappointed for a second term of office in
accordance with §23b par. 1 UG (Universities Act). The second term
begins on 15 February 2020 and runs through 14 February 2024.
Both the Senate and the University Council feel his reappointment
will provide continuity that will foster the dynamic development
of the university. Hellmut Samonigg’s second term will encompass
numerous appointments, an institutional digitalization strategy
and the construction and completion of Module 2 of MED CAMPUS
Graz, one the most attractive campuses in Europe.

LIPIDHYDROLYSE
Im Spezialforschungsbereich forschen insgesamt 7 Forschungsgruppen der Med Uni
Graz, der Uni Graz und der MedUni Wien an der Entschlüsselung von Krankheitsur-
sachen und der Entwicklung neuer Behandlungsstrategien. Dabei legen die Forsch-
erInnen den Fokus auf sogenannte „Lipidhydrolasen“. Diese Schlüsselenzyme setzen
unverzichtbare Biomoleküle frei und sind nicht nur am Zellwachstum und der Zell-
vermehrung beteiligt, sondern spielen auch in der zellulären Signalweiterleitung und
im Fett- und Energiestoffwechsel eine entscheidende Rolle. Das Exzellenzprogramm
des FWF verfolgt das Ziel, Forschungsnetzwerke nach internationalem Maßstab
durch autonome Schwerpunktsetzung an Universitätsstandorten zu unterstützen
und wird von Professorin Dagmar Kratky vom Gottfried Schatz Forschungszentrum
der Med Uni Graz koordiniert.
PROJECT LAUNCH: SPECIAL RESEARCH AREA LIPID
HYDROLYSIS
In this special research area, a total of 7 research groups from Med Uni Graz, the
University of Graz and the Medical University of Vienna are working to determine
the causes of disease and to develop new treatment strategies. The researchers
are focusing on lipid hydrolases. These key enzymes release essential biomolecules
and play a role in cell growth and reproduction as well as cellular signal transduction
and lipid and energy metabolism. The Special Research Programme of the Austrian
Science Fund (FWF) aims to establish research networks according to international
standards through autonomous research concentration at university locations and is
coordinated by Professor Dagmar Kratky from Gottfried Schatz Research Center at
Med Uni Graz.
