Gabriel Feltz ist einer der wichtigsten deutschen Dirigenten der mittleren Generation. Seit Beginn der Saison 2013/14 leitet er als Generalmusikdirektor (GMD) der Stadt Dortmund die Dortmunder Philharmoniker und die Oper Dortmund. Darüber hinaus ist er Chefdirigent der Belgrader Philharmoniker. Seine erste Position als GMD war bei dem Philharmonischen Orchester Altenburg-Gera (2001–2005). Den Stuttgarter Philharmonikern stand er fast zehn Jahre vor und leitete dort insgesamt über 350 Aufführungen. Von 2008 bis zum Sommer 2013 war Feltz zeitgleich 1. Gastdirigent am Theater Basel, welches in dieser Zeit zweimal als „Opernhaus des Jahres“ ausgezeichnet wurde (2009 und 2010). Seine künstlerische Ausbildung erhielt Feltz an der Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin. Anschließend schlug er eine klassisch deutsche Kapellmeister-Laufbahn ein, zunächst als Assistent von Gerd Albrecht an der Hamburgischen Staatsoper und dann als Kapellmeister in Lübeck und Bremen. Die Liste der von Gabriel Feltz dirigierten Klangkörper im In- und Ausland ist lang, weltweit sind es aktuell über 60 Orchester. Als Beispiele seien hier genannt: die Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, das Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, die Rundfunkorchester des NDR (Hamburg und Hannover), des WDR und des MDR, das National Orchestra of Taiwan, die Grazer Philharmoniker, das Sinfonieorchester des Dänischen Rundfunks, das Bayerische Staatsorchester, das National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland (RTE), das San Antonio Symphony Orchestra, das Hangzhou Philharmonic Orchestra, das Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra, das Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra und viele mehr. 2013/14 gab Feltz sein umjubeltes Debüt an der Komischen Oper Berlin mit der Premiere von Bernd Alois Zimmermanns „Die Soldaten“. Er betreute die Wiederaufnahmen von Wagners „Fliegendem Holländer“ an der Bayerischen Staatsoper München und von „Arabella“ an der Oper Frankfurt. An der Oper Zürich debütierte er 2016 mit einer Neuproduktion von Wolfgang Rihms „Hamletmaschine“. Eine regelmäßige Zusammenarbeit verbindet Gabriel Feltz mit der Oper Köln, wo er im Dezember 2020 anlässlich des 100-jährigen Jubiläums der Uraufführung von Erich Wolfgang Korngolds „Die tote Stadt“ die erfolgreiche Livestream-Premiere des Stückes leitete. Die Diskographie des Künstlers ist eine der umfangreichsten, die ein Dirigent seiner Generation aufweisen kann. 2007 erhielten die Stuttgarter Philharmoniker unter Leitung von Gabriel Feltz den „Prix Rachmaninow“ der „Foundation Sergej Rachmaninow“ – in Würdigung des bis heute umfangreichsten Aufführungszyklus’ der Werke Rachmaninows im deutschsprachigen Raum. Gabriel Feltz is one of the most important German conductors of the middle generation. He has been General Music Director (GMD) of the City of Dortmund and head conductor of the Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra since the beginning of the 2013/14 season. In addition to his position as GMD in Dortmund he is also Chief Conductor of the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra. He was the GMD of the Philharmonic Orchestra in Altenburg-Gera (2001-2005). He was the GMD of the Stuttgart Philharmonic for almost ten years and conducted that orchestra in more than 350 performances. From 2008 until the summer of 2013 Gabriel Feltz was also the first Guest Conductor of the Theatre Basel, which was named twice as “Opera House of the Year” during those years (2009 and 2010). Feltz received his artistic training at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin. After that he began a classic German capellmeister-career. He was first the assistant to Gerd Albrecht at the State Opera in Hamburg. Then he became capellmeister in Lübeck and Bremen. Gabriel Feltz has conducted an impressive list of orchestras, both at home and abroad. This list contains over 60 orchestras worldwide, for example the Saxon State Orchestra Dresden, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Radio Orchestras of the NDR (Hamburg and Hanover), WDR, MDR, the National Orchestra of Taiwan, the Graz Philharmonic, the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian State Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland (RTE), San Antonio Symphony Orchestra, the Hangzhou Philharmonic Orchestra, the Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra, the Osaka Philharmonic orchestra and many more. In 2013/14 Gabriel Feltz gave his celebrated debut at the Comic Opera Berlin with a premiere of Zimmermann’s “Soldaten”. He conducted resumptions of Wagner’s “Flying Dutchman” and “Arabella” at the Bavarian State Opera. He debuted at the Opera House Zürich with a new production of Rihm’s “Hamletmaschine” and will return there in 2020/21. Gabriel Feltz is a regular guest conductor at the Opera Köln, where in December 2020, for the 100th Anniversary of the premiere of Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s “Die tote Stadt”, he conducted the successful live-stream premiere of the opera. His discography is one of the most extensivest one for a conductor of his generation. In 2007 the Stuttgart Philharmonic and its conductor Gabriel Feltz were awarded the “Prix Rachmaninow” by the “Foundation Sergej Rachmaninow” – in recognition of the most complete cycle of performances of Rachmaninow’s works in the German-speaking countries. Ein so weltumspannendes Œuvre wie die zehn Sinfonien Gustav Mahlers
aufzunehmen stellt wahrhaftig eine Herkulesaufgabe dar. Nach 15 Jahren in-
tensiver musikalischer Arbeit legt Gabriel Feltz, früher Teilnehmer des Diri-
gentenforums des Deutschen Musikrats und heute Generalmusikdirektor der
Stadt Dortmund, nun als einziger deutscher Dirigent seiner Generation eine
solche beeindruckende Gesamteinspielung vor.
Zwei Orchester, die Stuttgarter Philharmoniker und die Dortmunder Philhar-
moniker, sind in diesem hochgelobten CD-Zyklus zu hören. Er offenbart ein-
mal mehr Feltz‘ Gespür dafür, sich in diesen überbordenden Werken auf das
Wesentliche in Mahlers Musik zu konzentrieren. Für „mit kühlem Kopf konzi-
pierten Einspielungen“ lobte ihn das Fono Forum, über „eine Inszenierung
der entfesselten Klangkontraste“ jubelten die Stuttgarter Nachrichten.
Im September 2021 findet das Projekt mit der Veröffentlichung der überwäl-
tigenden 9. sowie des originalen, zweisätzigen Fragments der 10. Sinfonie
ihren fulminanten Abschluss. Eine Gesamtedition aller zehn Sinfonien im
Schuber, flankiert von einem umfangreichen Begleitbuch, ist in Kürze erhält-
lich.

To record such a global oeuvre as Gustav Mahler’s ten symphonies is a truly
Herculean task. After 15 years of intensive musical labour, Gabriel Feltz, for-
mer participant of the Deutsche Musikrat’s Conductors Forum and now
General Music Director of the City of Dortmund, has produced a really im-
pressive complete recording, and is the only German conductor of his ge-
neration to have done so.
Two orchestras, namely the Stuttgart Philharmonic and the Dortmund
Philharmonic, can be heard on this highly acclaimed CD cycle. Once again
it reveals Feltz’s instinct to focus on the inner core of Mahler’s music, even
in these almost over-exuberant works. Fono Forum praised him for his
“recordings which are conceived with a cool head”, and the Stuttgarter
Nachrichten rejoiced at “a production of unfettered sound contrasts”.
In September 2021 the project will reach its dazzling conclusion with the re-
lease of the stunning 9th and the original, two movement fragment of the
10th. The complete edition of all ten symphonies in a boxed set, together
with an extensive accompanying booklet, will be available shortly.
