Landshut im Überblick
Landshut, seit 1839 Regierungshauptstadt von Niederbayern, hat in
800 Jahren bewegter Geschichte einen beneidenswerten Reichtum an
kulturellen Werten angesammelt. 1204 von Herzog Ludwig I. von
Bayern gegründet, blieb sie Hauptsitz der Dynastie der Wittelsbacher
bis 1255. Als Regierungssitz des Teilherzogtums Bayern-Landshut
erlebte der bürgerstolze Ort unter den „Reichen Herzögen“ 1393 bis
1503 seine Glanzzeit. Als Kunststadt wurde das mittelalterliche
Landshut weltberühmt: Die Meister der Bauhütte, Bildschnitzer, Bron-
zegießer, Harnischmacher und Glockenschmiede trugen alle dazu bei.
Der Martinsturm, einmalig auf der Welt, weil er trotz seiner Höhe von
130,1 m nur aus Ziegeln gemauert ist, gilt heute noch als Symbol
einer Bürgerschaft, die nicht selten sogar den Herzögen die Stirn bot.
Aber nichtsdestoweniger ist auch die Burg Trausnitz bis heute ein
Wahrzeichen der Stadt geblieben. Daneben wird man sich immer mehr
bewusst, dass die Altstadt als historischer Mittelpunkt der altbayeri-
schen Residenzstadt in ihrer gewachsenen Harmonie, in ihrer elegant
geschwungenen, durch leichte Versetzung gegliederten Baulinie
ihresgleichen sucht, weil eben Barock und auch Historismus trotz aller
eigenen Baulust mit sicherem Gefühl den einmal gesetzten Maßstab
der Gotik respektiert haben.
In dieser Umgebung nimmt sich die Residenz wie ein Sonderfall aus.
Nach dem Vorbild norditalienischer Paläste hatte sie Ludwig X. von
1536 bis 1543 als ersten Renaissancepalast nördlich der Alpen
erbauen lassen. Nicht nur die klassische Gliederung des Baukörpers
und die Gestaltung der Hof- und Ländfassade, die Arkadenhallen und
Gänge, die prachtvollen Repräsentationsräume, der Italienische und
der Deutsche Saal, auch die Ausstattung in Stuck und Farbe atmet in
ihren Themen griechischer und römischer Wissenschaft und Kunst
ganz den Geist der Erhellung am ewig jungen Vorbild der Antike.
Um 1380 hatten die Bürger angefangen, in einer unnachahmlichen
Selbstdarstellung die großen Sehenswürdigkeiten der Stadt zu
schaffen. Hans von Burghausen begann 1407 mit der Heiliggeistkirche,
zu einer Zeit als sein Hauptwerk, die Martinskirche, schon weit fort-
geschritten war. Grabmal und Portrait dieses Meisters, auf den die
Landshuter Bauhütte zurückgeht, sind an der südlichen Außenwand
der Kirche angebracht. Seit 1380 wurden nacheinander drei Bürger-
häuser in der mittleren Altstadt zum heute noch bestehenden Rathaus
umgeschaffen, das nach der Mitte des vorigen Jahrhunderts im
neugotischen Stil restauriert wurde. Der große nach dem historischen
Vorgänger gestaltete Prunksaal erhielt damals die prächtige Dar-
stellung der Landshuter Hochzeit 1475 als Umlaufgemälde, das mit
zu den heutigen Festaufführungen anregte.
Auf der Burg Trausnitz, deren Rundtürme und die Georgs-
kapelle noch in die Zeit der Romanik weisen, sind in
der auch architektonisch originellen „Narrentreppe“ in
Frescotechnik gemalte Szenen der einst auf der Burg
beliebten Commedia dell’arte erhalten.

A view of Landshut The city of Landshut has been Lower Bavaria’s seat of government since 1839. During 800 years of exciting history, the city has collected an enviable wealth of cultural values. Founded by Duke Ludwig I of Bavaria in 1204, the town remained the main seat of the House of Wittelsbach until 1255. Under the reign of the “Rich Dukes“ Landshut witnessed its most glorious period from 1393 to 1503, when it was the seat of government of the dukedom of Bavaria-Landshut. In medieval times Landshut was famous for its arts and crafts: All the master craftsmen, carvers, sculptors, bronze casters, harness formers and gold-smiths contributed to its fame. The steeple of St. Martin’s church – unique in the world – because it was all built of bricks despite its height of 130,1 m, still counts as a symbol of those citizens who more than once rebelled against their dukes. The castle Trausnitz also remained one of the city landmarks until present times. Besides people become more and more aware that the “Altstadt“ as the historic centre of old Bavarian’s residence seat is extraordinarily remarkable, regarding its naturally grown harmony, the elegant building line, ingeniously structured. Even the Baroque era, which was very enthusiastic about their own style of building, paid reverence to the measurements set by the Gothic style. In these surroundings, the Residence building strikes one as an exception. According to the example of the Palaces in Northern Italy, Ludwig X built the first palace in Renaissance style north of the Alps from 1536 – 1543. The classic composure of the building and the construction of the fronts leading to the inner yard, the archways, the aisles and the splendid banqueting-hall, all wear the spirit of the eternal ideal of Antiquity, demonstrating themes of Greek and Roman Art and Science in stucco and paint. In about 1380, the citizens began to create the appearance of the town with their gorgeous objects of interest, representing themselves in an almost inimitable manner: In 1407, Hans von Burghausen set out the building of the church of the Holy Spirit, at times where the construction of his masterpiece, the church St. Martin’s already made good progress. The tombstone and portrait of this artist are to be seen on the southern side of the exterior wall of the church. Since 1380, three patrician mansions in the middle of the “Altstadt“ have successively been rebuilt to the Town Hall as it still is today, in the second half of the previous century it was restored into New Gothic style. The large hall of state, decorated as its historic predecessor, was given its splendid representation of the “Landshuter Hochzeit 1475“ as a painting covering all four walls of the state room. It was this painting that initiated the re-commencement of the performance of the “Landshuter Hochzeit 1475“. At the castle “Trausnitz“ the round towers and St. George’s chapel still show the romanic style, whereas at jester’s stairs with its very special architecture, some frescos show scenes from the Commedia dell’Arte that was very popular once.

Landshut è capoluogo della Bassa Baviera dal 1839. In 800 anni di
storia ricca di eventi, ha accumulato un’invidiabile patrimonio di valori
culturali. Fondata nel 1204 dal duca Ludovico I di Baviera, rimase sede
centrale della dinastia dei Wittelsbach fino al 1255. Durante il regno
dei “ricchi duchi” (dal 1393 al 1503) la città visse il periodo di massimo
splendore, in quanto sede governativa del ducato Baviera-Landshut.
Nel Medioevo Landshut acquistò fama mondiale come città delle
arti, grazie al prezioso contributo dei maestri della „Bauhütte“
(corporazione medievale di scalpellini addetti alla costruzione di
chiese), degli intagliatori, dei bronzisti, dei costruttori di armature e
dei campanari.
La torre del duomo di S. Martino, unica al mondo con i suoi 130,1
metri di altezza, è costruita in mattoni ed è considerata ancora oggi
simbolo di una borghesia che non di rado teneva testa perfino ai
duchi. Anche il castello di Trausnitz rappresenta un importante simbolo
della città.Chiunque visiti Landshut può osservare come la „Altstadt“,
fulcro dell’antico centro bavarese, non ha pari nell’armonia e nell’ele-
ganza dell’architettura, nella quale si accostano elementi estetici
diversi fra loro; il Barocco e lo Storicismo, nonostante le loro partico-
larità architettoniche, hanno infatti rispettato senza esitazione i pre-
cedenti canoni del Gotico.
In questo contesto la Residenza è da considerarsi un’eccezione. Primo
palazzo rinascimentale a nord delle Alpi, fu costruita per ordine di
Ludovico X fra il 1536 e il 1543, sul modello dei Palazzi dell’Italia
settentrionale. Lo spirito illuminante dell’eterno modello antico è
percepibile negli elementi classici dell’edificio, nell’architettura della
facciata posteriore e del cortile, nei portici, nei corridoi, nelle sontuose
sale di rappresentanza, nel salone italiano e in quello tedesco, ma
anche nella decorazione a stucco e pittura (in particolar modo nei
motivi greci e romani).
Verso il 1380 i cittadini cominciarono, con grande capacità auto-
rappresentativa, a costruire i grandi monumenti della città. Hans von
Burghausen diede inizio all’edificazione della chiesa di S. Spirito nel
1407, anno in cui i lavori di costruzione del suo capolavoro, la chiesa
di S. Martino, erano già iniziati. La tomba e il ritratto di questo artista,
a cui si rifà la „Bauhütte“ di Landshut, si trovano sulla facciata esterna
e meridionale della chiesa. Dal 1380 tre abitazioni civili che si
trovavano nella zona centrale della „Altstadt“ furono trasformate una
dopo l’altra nell’odierno municipio, che nella seconda metà del
secolo scorso fu restaurato in stile neogotico. Il grande salone delle
cerimonie, realizzato secondo il modello storico precedente, accolse
nel 1475 il grandioso dipinto delle Nozze di Landshut (raffigurate
sulle pareti), che fu un importante modello per le odierne
rappresentazioni.
Nel castello Trausnitz, le cui torri perimetrali e la cappella
di S. Giorgio rimandano al periodo romanico, si trova la
“Scala dei giullari” (molto innovativa dal punto di vista
architettonico) nella quale si possono ammirare gli
affreschi con le scene tipiche della Commedia dell’arte,
all’epoca molto amata dai castellani.

Landshut, un aperçu de la ville Landshut, capitale du gouvernement de Basse-Bavière depuis 1839, accumula au cours de 800 ans d’histoire mouvementée une richesse inouïe de valeurs culturelles. Créée en 1204 par le duc Louis Ier de Bavière, elle resta le siège de la dynastie des Wittelsbach jusqu’en 1255. En tant que siège du gouvernement du petit duché de Bavière, Landshut, source de fierté de la bourgeoisie, connut sa période de gloire sous le règne des „Riches Ducs” de 1393 à 1503. Du point de vue artistique, Landshut devint célèbre au Moyen-Age: ses maîtres de chantiers, sculpteurs, fondeurs de bronze, fabricants de harnais et orfèvres contribuèrent tous à sa renommée. Le clocher de Saint-Martin, unique au monde parce qu’exécuté entièrement en briques malgré sa hauteur de 130,1 mètres, reste aujourd’hui encore le symbole d’une bourgeoisie qui tint à plusieurs reprises tête aux ducs. De même, le château fort de Trausnitz est demeuré jusqu’à nos jours un emblème de la ville. En outre, on prend de plus en plus conscience que l’Altstadt, coeur historique de cette ancienne ville résidentielle de Bavière, présente une architecture d’une harmonie sans pareille. On y trouve un mélange de constructions élégamment allurées, où les normes établies par le gothique furent respectées avec goût par le baroque et l’historisme. Dans ce contexte, la Résidence apparaît comme une exception. Prenant modèle sur les palais du nord de l’Italie, Louis X fit construire de 1536 à 1543 le premier palais de style Renaissance au nord des Alpes. Non seulement la disposition des corps de bâtiment et l’ornementation classique des façades donnant sur la cour et sur la Länd, les galeries à arcades et les couloirs, les somptueux salons de réception, les salles italienne et allemande, mais aussi la décoration en stuc et en couleurs respirent, dans leurs thèmes inspirés des sciences et de l’art gréco-romain, l’esprit éternellement jeune de l’Antiquité. Vers 1380 les bourgeois avaient commencé, dans un désir de perfection inimitable, à bâtir les grandes curiosités de la ville. En 1407, Hans von Burghausen commença l’église Saint-Esprit, à un moment où son chef-d’oeuvre, l’église Saint-Martin, était déjà bien avancé. On peut voir la tombe et le portrait du maître, à qui l’on doit les chantiers de Landshut, sur le mur extérieur sud de l’église. Depuis 1380, trois maisons bourgeoises situées au centre de l’Altstadt furent transformées l’une après l’autre en ce même hôtel de ville qui existe encore de nos jours et qui fut restauré en style néo-gothique dans la deuxième partie du siècle dernier. Restaurée fidèlement, la grande salle d’apparat fut alors embellie d‘une fresque, sompteuse représentation du mariage princier de 1475, qui contribua à redonner vie, de nos jours, à cette fête historique. Au château-fort de Trausnitz, dont les tours rondes et la chapelle Saint-Georges portent encore les traces de l’époque romane, on trouve, dans l’escalier du fou à l’architecture en soi déjà très originale, des fresques représentant des scènes de la Commedia dell’Arte, au- trefois tant appréciée au château.
