Typologie, welche die Mineralquellen für
medizinische und Freizeitzwecke in einer
geschützten Umgebung einsetzt, haben
diese Städte die Entwicklung von Bade-
und Klimaressorts sowie Ferienorten
weltweit wesentlich mitbestimmt.
Dieses Erbe weist einen herausragenden
universellen Wert auf, den sie schützen,
erhalten und an die zukünftigen
Generation weitergeben möchten.
Eine Antwort wird im Juli 2020 anlässlich
der Sitzung des Komitees des Welterbes

A panoramic funicular connects the city centre to
Colline d’Annette et Lubin where the new thermal
centre is based. The site affords a magnificent view
of the city. The starting points of several signposted
walking routes are situated in that location and
a path which affords great views as you descend
towards the Sept Heures Park.

In the four corners of Spa, the fountains, more familiarly known as
“pouhons”, are still accessible to visitors. A full circuit will include the
Pierre le Grand and Prince de Condé pouhons (in the town cen-tre), the
Tonnelet spring, the Sauvenière and Groesbeek fountains, and the Barisart
spring and the Géronstère fountains, the latter located at a higher altitude
(between 300 and 450m) in the sur-rounding woods.
Die überall in Spa zu findenden Brunnen, geläufiger als „Pouhons“

DER POUHON PIERRE LE GRAND
Pierre Le Grand Pouhon is the town’s main spring. This “pouhon”
was first mentioned in a 16th cen-tury work and at that time it was
a humble well-house on the Spa village square. It housed the most
abundant spring. This naturally sparkling water contains mineral
salts and is rich in iron. It flows at an average rate of 21 000 litres
per day.
Die Pouhon Pierre le Grand ist die bedeutendste Quelle der
Stadt; diese Mineralquelle fand erstmals in einem Bauwerk
aus dem 16. Jahrhundert Erwähnung, dabei handelt es sich
um eine schlichte Ädikula auf dem Platz des Dorfes, was einst
Spa war. Es beherbergt die ergiebigste Quelle. Von Natur aus
kohenlsäurehaltig, steckt sie voller Mineralsalze und ist reich an
Eisen. Ihre Durchflussmenge beträgt durchschnittlich 21.000 Liter
am Tag.

This spring, discovered in the 19th century not far from the Pierre
le Grand pouhon, comes from the same water table but its water
has a richer mineral content acquired during the final part of the
un-derground path it takes.
Diese im 19. Jahrhundert entdeckte Quelle, die sich unweit
des Pouhons Pierre le Grand befindet, wird aus dem gleichen
Grundwasser gespeist. Sie unterscheidet sich von ihr durch eine
reichhaltigere Mineralzusammensetzung, die während des letzten
Abschnitts ihres unterirdischen Verlaufs zustandekommt.

TONNELET SPRING
DIE QUELLE LE TONNELET
This spring was popular in the early 17th century. It owes its
name to the fact that it was then collect-ed in a keg (“tonnelet” in
French). It is the same water as that of the Marie-Henriette Spa, but
as it is at its origin (ferruginous and carbogaseous).
Diese Quelle wird schon seit Anfang des 17. Jahrhunderts
aufgesucht. Sie verdankt ihren Namen der Tatsache, dass sie
damals in einem Fass aufgefangen wurde. Dabei handelt es sich um
das gleiche Wasser aus der „Spa Marie-Henriette“, jedoch so, wie es
an der Quelle ist (eisen- und kohlensäurehaltig).

Until the mid-19th century, this spring ran freely in a
meadow where it was then collected. The Mey-erbeer
walk, named after the famous German composer (1791-
1864) is a charming walk with wa-terfalls uniting the
Barisart Spring with its sister, the Géronstère Spring.
This spring is outside and freely accessible.
Bis Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts floss diese Quelle frei
in eine Wiese, wo sie dann aufgefangen wurde. Die
Meyerbeer Promenade, benannt nach dem berühmten
deutschen Komponisten (1791-1864), ist eine charmante
Promenade mit kleinen Wasserfällen, die Barisart
mit seiner Schwester, der Géronstère-Quelle,
zusammenführt.

The water from this spring (altitude of 400 metres), with
a sulphurous taste, is particularly recom-mended for
infections of the respiratory tracts. Known for its strong
taste (a ferruginous and carbo-gaseous spring) it was also
known under the name of Enragée (meaning “furious”).
This spring is outside and freely accessible.
Das Wasser aus dieser Quelle (in 400 Metern Höhe)
mit schwefelartigem Geschmack, wird vor allem bei
Beschwerden der Atemwege empfohlen. Bekannt
für seinen starken Geschmack (eisenhaltige und
kohlensäurehaltige Quelle), wurde sie auch unter dem

the starting point for many walks, including the famous
Orléans walk, named after the duchess.

This exceptional exhibition at the Pouhon
Pierre Le Grand showcases more than 140
original works of the Spanish master Joan
Miró. It includes watercolours, lithographs,
drawings, engravings, collages and ceramics.
This is the first time that most of these
works have been on public display, in this
magnificent environment. The exhibition
is structured around several themes: the
Spanish Civil War, surrealism, colours, the
artist’s hands, thematics, simplicity, the role
of childhood and freedom. The exhibition
also broaches a little-known aspect of
this famous artist: his desire to go beyond
painting and to win over the general public.
In 1938, Miró wrote: «The more I work, the
more I want to work. I would like to try my
hand at sculpture, pottery, engraving and
have a press. To try also, insofar as possible,
to go beyond easel painting and to bring
myself closer, through painting, to the
human masses I have never stopped thinking
about». In 1948, Miró returned to Paris. This
was the starting point of a considerable graphic work which would take on an increasingly important role in
the work of the artist. Up to 1982, Miró would produce hundreds of pieces of work. The exhibition showcases
this enormous turbulent creation. No artist has ever been so free to do or so keen to give, as Joan Miró.
Diese außergewöhnliche Ausstellung im Pouhon Pierre Le Grand zeigt über 140 Originalwerke – Aquarelle,
Lithographien, Zeichnungen, Holzschnitte, Collagen und Keramiken – des spanischen Meisters Joan Miró. Die
meisten dieser Werke werden zum ersten Mal in dieser prachtvollen Umgebung der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt.
Die Ausstellung gliedert sich in mehrere Themenfelder: den spanischen Bürgerkrieg, den Surrealismus, die
Farben, die Hände des Künstlers, die Thematiken, die Simplizität, die Rolle der Kindheit und der Freiheit.
Ebenso thematisiert die Ausstellung einen kaum bekannten Aspekt dieses berühmten Künstlers: seinen Willen,
über die Malerei hinauszugehen und die breite Öffentlichkeit zu gewinnen. Im Jahr 1938 schreibt Miró: „Je mehr
ich arbeite, desto stärker ist mein Verlangen, zu arbeiten. Ich möchte mich an der Bildhauerei, der Töpferei,
der Grafik versuchen, und gern eine Druckpresse besitzen. Ebenso möchte ich den Versuch wagen, soweit
möglich über die Grenzen der Staffeleimalerei hinauszugehen und mich durch die Malerei den breiten Massen
annähern, an die zu denken ich nie aufgehört habe“.
1948 kehrt Miró nach Paris zurück. Dies bildet den Ausgangspunkt eines bemerkenswerten grafischen
Schaffenswerkes, das stetig immer mehr Raum in der Arbeit des Künstlers einnimmt. Bis 1982 sollte Miró
Hunderte von Werken schaffen.
In der Ausstellung wird dieses enorme, aufwirbelnde Schaffenswerk präsentiert. Noch nie zuvor war ein
Künstler so frei in seinem Schaffen und so gewillt, etwas zu geben, wie Joan Miró.

Spa is recognised as the mother of all spa towns. As it was home to the
first Casino in the world, it is also the cradle of gambling.
Not so long ago, all the royal families and prominent figures of Europe
would arrange to meet in Spa. There were so many things to do there but
the biggest attraction was undoubtedly the Casino.
